Listening to the entire album in full surround will give you a new appreciation for Elton and this album. If you can find it and have a means to play it on an SACD compatible player, you should definitely do it.

Elton did come up with the B-B-B-Bennie. Actually Bernie has said that he hates he didn’t came up with the coolest part of the song. Supposedly the song is a satire to the music industry and how it wanted to change the image and electronic sounds over the art of it

  • @robdaviesprogm

    Thoughts:
As previously stated, this was a studio recording made to sound like a live show. Gus Dudgeon, the producer who was responsible for producing all of Elton's recordings from 1970-76 and 1985-86, heard Elton play that chord at the beginning as a count-in for the band. He thought it sounded like something someone would do at a live show, so he added in some applause and hand-claps from a 1972 Elton concert and a Jimi Hendrix concert, plus some extra whoops and whistles from the studio tea-boy, and then added a load of reverb and delay to make it sound like it was recorded in a concert hall.
Elton didn't initially think much of this song, and has never seen it as a hit. In early 1974, when the third single from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album was due to come out, Elton wanted "Candle in the Wind" released in the US and Canada as it had been the third single in the rest of the world. However, his North American record company, MCA, wanted to put out "Bennie and the Jets". Elton fought them tooth-and-nail on it, until finally they told him (truthfully), that it was the #1 R&B record on Detroit radio. Being a huge R&B fan himself, Elton was floored by this news, and gave the go-ahead to release it. The song became his second US #1 single, and got him an invitation to perform on Soul Train (a first for a white artist).
There's barely been a tour since 1974 where Elton hasn't played this song. He often extends it to 10 minutes or more, performing an extended solo during the second half, complete with some incredible piano acrobatics. I strongly suggest checking out his 1984 performance of this song at Wembley Stadium.
That instrument you were hearing at the end is a Farfisfa organ. It was performed by Elton on the record, though in concert, that part is played either by guitarist Davey Johnstone (on electric guitar instead of organ) or by whatever keyboardist he has with him. Elton used Farfisfa organ on a number of his recordings around this time, most notably on "Crocodile Rock".

Great post and absolutely true (I'm an Elton fan). Everyone I used to hang with on the southside of Chi was into this cut. Black radio fell in love with him just like we did and played his music. Specifically when 'The B**ch Is Back' was released - white radio wouldn't touch it, but we were into it big time. There are many instances of black radio playing music by white artists that white radio would not play for one reason or another, mostly censorship.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was a double album and there's not a bad song on it. This was Elton at his peak. He had TWO Greatest Hits albums by the time he was 30! He's had over 50 Top Forty hits and has sold over 300 Million records. As usual for their 70's songs, Elton wrote the music and Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. Keep going with the EJ! Never get tired of hearing his music, especially his 70's songs. Thankss for listening and sharing!

About 15 years ago, I was the Switchboard Operator in a 4◇ Hotel when Elton came to town.
My position required me to give wake up calls to an incredible array of famous people.
One was Davey Johnston, EJs long serving guitarist. I wished him well for the Sold-Out show later that night. He asked if I were going, and I said I had tried but failed to secure a very Hot Ticket. Later that morning, he came down in person to the front desk and gifted me a ticket on the floor, just off-center 6th row!
I of course had the time of my life, and will especially fondly recall dancing to BENNY & THE JETS. I felt like I was 2 feet off the ground the whole time.
I was quite uninhibited to express my feelings through dance with many eyes on me.
I stood out because I was standing up in a silver-Haired sit-down crowd of his aging fans. It was magical! Elton Played, I danced, and it felt like he was doing that song especially for me!
That is what makes ELTON☆JOHN the SUPERSTAR that he is. All the greats can make YOU feel like they are doing JUST for YOU!
(Robert Plant of Led Zep has talked about how he tried to look into EVERY set of eyes that he could see in the audience to establish that personal connection with every fan)

For those that will get to see Sir Elton John this year on his final tour, how I envy you.
You will have such a blast because this man was born to perform and it will be a spectacular show from start to finish.
I've seen Elton 3 times now. I was trying to get tickets for New York ~ I want to treat my daughter as her NYU Masters graduation gift ~ but having trouble snagging the close seats without the huge costs
He will not disappoint. Y'all have fun!

As one of those recommending this song (amongst other Elton songs) I'm so happy you finally got around to reacting to it. I just listened twice as I love this song so much. I never realised this was not a live recording, and always wanted to be the one who does the loud whistle ! Sort of genius to do it as if it was a live recording, but then that's Elton all over. One of my favourite reactions J

Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics. Sends them to Elton. Then Elton puts the words to music.
Bernie has never complained or suggested musical modifications and Elton has never rewritten the lyrics.
