I ran into Paul after the show when I was having dinner at the Hyatt...he didn't want to have anything to do with me...he met up with this tall, very hot, blonde in a red dress and got in the elevator with her...and Eric was there ..but wow, he was in a bad mood.
As a Kiss fan of 45 years, I listen to 80s Kiss far more than now than I do the 70s stuff. I never need to hear Rock & Roll All Nite or Love Gun. I’m a massive Heart fan, they are probably only behind Kiss & Beatles for me. So that fact that you can trace Crazy Nights to Heart’s 1985 self titled album, works for me. I know Martin hates it, but I like Ron Nevison’s work through this period, whether it’s Heart, Kiss, Ozzy or Europe. The tragedy of the Crazy Nights album for me, is that Time Traveller and Sword & Stone were left off. It would have made a good album, great. Truth be told, Nevison probably had to keep Gene happy and engaged, but I would have been dropping off No, No, No..and Good girl gone bad. My track listing would have been Crazy, crazy nights I’ll fight hell to hold you Sword and Stone Bang bang you Come hell or high water My way Time Traveller When your walls come down Reason to live Turn on the night Thief in the night
Great show guys! Going to my cousin and lifting with him really made me rediscover the 80s records and hearing songs like Turn On the Night and Reason to Live over there with him always will bring back memories now. Very solid release in my opinion i think a 7/10 fits perfect for this record.
The problem with 80’s KISS, is that by 1983 or so, they were in desperation mode. They HAD to chase trends to stay afloat, as they were playing to 3/4 empty arenas some nights. Their best albums of the 80’s were Lick it Up and Animalize imo. With animalize they caught lightning in a bottle with MSJ and his shredder (but very melodic) style, then with Vinny Vincent being an excellent songwriter. After that, they chased the hair metal/glam style with juvenile songs about girls and getting laid, while trying to write a hit with some cheesy ballads. They had no identity, and were desperate and people weren’t buying it.
Yes and no. Yes, there were many songs like that, but Dynasty is not that for the most part, nor the early stuff, for the most part. Hotter than Hell has a lot of interesting choices that work that are not vapid (strange ways, goin blind, coming home, parasite, etc)
It’s awesome to see Marco hosting another episode. He does a great job of moderating: Setting the stage, getting everyone’s opinion, and not interjecting in a way that distracts.
agree completely, Marco is a great host and moderator. Just think he suits this host role more than Grant- Grant is just better as a contributor/when its his turn to discuss, nothing personal against him.

I wasn’t trying to diminish Grant’s contributions. He has done a lot for the channel. But I do agree that Marco's approach to hosting makes the episodes more enjoyable for me.
Asylum is actually my favorite Kiss album in their whole catalog, and I did grow up with the early stuff. I go through phases, but I will always put on Asylum over any other one. Hotter Than Hell is up there, too.

I got into KISS by buying Creatures Of The Night & Dynasty on the same day so I was aware, straight off the bat, that the band could run very successfully with many styles within the rock genre, so the very commercial feel of Crazy Nights didn't phase me at all. AOR KISS was right up my street. Love the sound that Ron Nevison achieved and the songs are uniformly strong, my favourites being My Way, I'll Fight Hell To Hold You and Thief In The Night (Wendy O'Williams' version is great too). Reckon I'd score it 8.5/10. Might have scored even higher if Ron hadn't nixed the inclusion of the marvellous Sword & Stone.
It's a really good album, a hair metal album for sure but I don't mind that at all, I grew up in that era, hair metal/speed and thrash were all new. I loved a lot of it and still do! Good show guys.
It’s one of the few Kiss albums that I have a hard time listening to in its entirety. It’s down at the bottom with Psycho Circus and Hot in the Shade for me.
I’m still trying to work out how Turn On The Night wasn’t a hit. It was the perfect song at the perfect time. Not one of their better albums by any means though. I’m with Marco. I’ll give the album a generous 7/10. Genes songs are just average and were better on Asylum. The singles are definitely the best 3 tracks and most of Pauls songs are good as usual and help lift my rating.

The first time I heard the song "Crazy Crazy Nights" was at the video shoot for the song at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The Olympic is an old venue in a bad part of town famous for hosting boxing, wrestling, roller derby, and Punk shows in the 80's. During the video shot, Kiss lip synced the song over and over and over and over and over again. By the end of the 12 hour shoot, I hated the song and still can't listen to it today. I did get to meet Eric and Paul outside of the venue and KISS did plug in and played 3 or 4 songs live for the thousands of fans who showed up for the free video shoot.
I first became aware of KISS when they were featured on Donahue (talk show) and they ended up being my first concert when they toured in support of Hot in the Shade with Slaughter and Faster Pussycat opening. The album is a 6 out of 10, but I enjoy some of it and I feel good when I spin it (nostalgia).
maybe a Dynasty episode...the guys, go in and to make this Classic Rock record...and they did a pretty darn good job of it...I think it's Kiss's best record..
I jumped off the Kiss train with the solo albums and struggled with them ever since. Crazy Nights was not the worst Kiss album, but it is right up there with Unmasked for the worst of the stinkers.
Every few years I'll go through the collection for records to cycle through, especially if they've not been played in years, and sometimes they will resonate with me. the only inspiration I derive from Crazy Nights is to take the record off a few mins into playing it.

After that it was usually just cherry picking songs off albums here and there. For Crazy Nights probably the only tune I’ve really listened to at all lately has been No No No. But even that’s been awhile. Most 80s KISS for me is going back to mostly Creatures, LIU, and Asylum
Not in my top 10 Kiss albums. Kulick was the high point. Only half the album was really Kiss. The rest was filler. Creatures, Asylum were far better albums. I give Crazy Nights 6/10.
I have a theory that in order to pay for Nevison (who likely had a hefty fee in 87), they dipped into the recording budget for the next album (what would become HITS). It was a gamble that unfortunately didn't pay off. Hence why HITS was basically a collection of dressed-up demos done on the cheap.
Man, I guess I'm the Contrarian here; because I absolutely loathe this album. All it sounds like to me is a band struggling to stay relevant without any real personality and the songs are absolutely terrible. Bruce Kulick is playing his ass off, though.
This album to me has some excellent songs but at the very same time Ron nevison's production let's the album down on the very weak tracks and this is my favorite hard rock and melodic rock producer and I don't think he did kiss any justice with the production on this album and he did the same with heart, Chicago and more during this time
Kiss made two kinds of records.. where they're just "being Kiss"...or where they're stepping up their game to actively compete with the market...this is the latter...
I'm a lifelong Kiss fan, but I'm 100% with Martin all the way on this one. I remember being so amped up for this in 1987, and absolutely hating the lead single when I saw the video premiere on MTV. I held out hope that the rest of the album would be more to my taste, but that ended up not being the case. I know they delayed work on this album solely because they were waiting for Ron Nevison's availability, but IMO the results were not worth waiting for. It's one of the worst sounding albums in the entire discography as far as I'm concerned, but the songs themselves couldn't be saved no matter who was behind the board. In fact, the only three songs that I liked at the time (and even still) are the same three that Martin named: I'll Fight Hell To Hold You, When Your Walls Come Down & Thief in the Night. The other tracks range from meh to downright embarrassing (I'm looking at you, My Way & Bang Bang You). And their bid for the big ballad, Reason to Live, has decent verses, but gets let down by the chorus. From the first time I heard it, it sounded to me like Paul was trying to cram too many words into too short a space ... "EVERYBODY'SGOTAREASONTOLIVEBABY" It just sounded comical to me, and still does. To me, it's the epitome of a 5/10 album.
I agree with (I think it was Reed) that X in Sex and Rock Hard off Smashes were even more stupid than Bang Bang You etc. Crazy Nights wasn't really a flop- it went platinum and had two videos that made it to #1 on the Dial MTV daily countdown. Not as commercially successful as Bon Jovi obviously but Bon Jovi was on top of the world at this point, how could you compete?
Crazy to me is Reason to Live wasn't a huge hit, it got MTV air play alot (Video was cool) and i think it's one of the best ballads from that time. It's my top 3 favorite Ballads next to Cinderella don't know what you got til it's gone being my favorite. Maybe it was because there just was too many good album and songs out in that time period.- Aerosmith, Poison, Heart, Whitesnake, GNR, Dokken, Motely
7:18 dude, Ace was barely on The Elder cuz he didn't like the direction, he wasn't on board, so you can't really base on that one for Ace's skills.. lol
Vinnie is a better song writer and speed player. Bruce isn't as flashy, but he's actually a great guitar player. I stood 3 feet away from him while he was playing in Union and he was all over the fret board and he made it look effortless. As human, Bruce gets the win over Vinnie.
4/10 its very very avg . Some weak songs. Fight hell to hold you is probably the best . Im sorry i like Bruce but as a 80s guitarist he's way way down the list. Its not a good album . The album cover is cool though.
Thanks God Martin saved the day, he's the only sane person on the panel😂 I can't stand this album, it's the worst of 80's KISS and one of the worst in their catalogue. The songs, production, lyrics, keyboards - everything here makes me sick. And if I ever hear Crazy Crazy Nights again I'll probably jump out of the window. I can not imagine how anyone is able to enjoy this stupidity, it's just beyond my comprehension. I give this garbage album 1/10.
Crazy Nights is a solid 6/10. The good songs are really good. The bad songs are as bad as KISS got (My Way, Hell or High Water, When Your Walls Come Down). It also has mediocre/passable songs (Crazy, Crazy Nights, Bang Bang You and No, No, No). It's unbalanced and far from perfect, but it's decent overall. Reason to Live, I'll Fight Hell to Hold You, Thief in the Night and Good Girl Gone Bad are awesome songs.

And if I ever hear Crazy Crazy Nights again I'll probably jump out of the window. I can not imagine how anyone is able to enjoy this stupidity, it's just beyond my comprehension.
I give this garbage album 1/10.
The second worst album in the entire KISS discography , the worst being Hot In The Shade. I rate it 2/10 , just an awful album.
Just shows this is a love it or hate it album, which is understandable
Hot In the Shade has too much filler, but two-thirds of the album is fantastic!!

Crazy Nights is a solid 6/10. The good songs are really good. The bad songs are as bad as KISS got (My Way, Hell or High Water, When Your Walls Come Down). It also has mediocre/passable songs (Crazy, Crazy Nights, Bang Bang You and No, No, No). It's unbalanced and far from perfect, but it's decent overall. Reason to Live, I'll Fight Hell to Hold You, Thief in the Night and Good Girl Gone Bad are awesome songs.
