Well what can I say about the wee Zuiko lens, this little classic which I picked up for buttons. A mere 50 euros, a bargain second hand. If you can get your hands on this tiny beauty don’t hesitate on it.
I took the OM1 and the Zuiko Macro out and about around my neighbour in Graz. Now I must admit to you, that my first roll of film the Ilford Pan 100 did go to plan. The development got completely messed up but that’s not the story here. I re-shot a fresh roll film the Ilford PanF 50 and developed it in DDX for 8 mins and of course using my Spinmatic device again. I have a seperate video concerning that rotating wonder. This is awesome! I got the same rig as you for scanning negatives: X-E3 + Zuiko 50/3.5 macro and a light table. I'm looking forward to watching more on this on your channel.
Hi Carlos, Thank you for your kind commrnts. Should be more on Zuiko macro lens coming soon too.
Iford, I used those film to when I shoot film in the past. Nice vid. Thank you for sharing this.
You are most welcome.
I really appreciate the way you take us along each step of your process. Also, what a coincidence! I just picked up a similar lense - Minolta Rokkor 50mm 3.5 :D
Hi Georg,
We should meet up in Graz and shoot some film. We could shot Russia, I've a Kiev IV, do still have that FED ? pm on twitter/instagram.
@@GavinLyonsCreates Hey Gavin! :-) Yeah, let's do that. I sold my FED already. The only Soviet camera I have is a medium format Kiev 60. Would be fun to use it again. I'll pm you on Instagram.
Hey, Gavin!
Thanks so much for this. I’ve been searching for a low cost, high quality solution for digitizing my negatives. So glad I found you and this lens. One thing, though. I just watched a review on lens adapters. Can you tell me what adapter you use and have you tested it for sharpness in the edges? 😀
Hi Caroline, Sorry took me awhile to answer, I found the corner sharpness perfectly fine. The lens adapter is a simple manual XF to OM one, nothing too special.Hope that helps
How do you get around seeing the light pattern from the phone screen coming through on the negatives? Thanks!
A piece of white paper or white plastic under the negative would solve that smartphone pattern issue. Yes, exposure would drop two, tree stops or even more, but since the camera is on a tripod who cares?
Thanks Tomislav for the tip!
Nice video! Is there any reason you scan your negatives at iso 4000? That seems a bit high on an APS-C sensor
Well spotted! I did mention to set the camera to base ISO 100 or 200 obviously I didn't take my own advice! Thank again Gavin
M43 sensor*
@@flowermaze___ no Fujifilm uses APS-C sensors, not M43
@@thijskennis8757 my mistake, they do, but I thought the digi camera in use was an Olympus EP mirrorless not a fuji!
Generally speaking, your videos about film photography (alternative or otherwise) are good and informative...."thank you". The BUT is that I worry greatly about the endless pillaging of SLR Film camera lenses - making a film SLR, complete with its original lens, more and more expensive for film photographers to purchase (even Zenit's & Praktica's). Then Ebay gets drowned in camera body's and worse still - Ebay Sellers (Car Booter's & House Clearer's) are now jumping on this pointless bandwagon and stripping original lenses off everything including folding cameras, rangefinders, viewfinders and cine cameras. Some wonderful cameras wrecked and ruined for posterity. Ebay, in particular, has turned into a Breakers Yard. All encouraged by You Tube videos promoting film camera lenses for digital purposes....."for buttons".
Thank you for your comments much appreciated. I totally agree with you. However Zuiko 50mm Macro f3.5 was never a kit lens, maybe you might be confusing it with the 50mm f1.8 which came as standard on most of the OM series.
The idea in the video is to shoot film and scan film with the same macro lens. This helps folks on a budget to get into film photography and use the lens in many ways. I myself was lucky to get this lens for the price I paid, it took some time and it's well used. I wouldn't promote the idea of cannibalising a camera system just for lens that's some how wrong.
Best Regards,
Gavin
@@GavinLyonsCreates thank you so much for your reply. I do understand what you are trying to achieve with your video. I guess I just hate seeing film photography lenses, in general, reaching crazy prices for anything but film photography. Anyway, again, thanks for the work you do with all of your videos. I have particularly enjoyed the ones around Cyanotype.
@@clivecartey Will be doing more Cyanotype stuff soon. I did some reviews in the past, but isn't my direction at all. More about having funny with the medium of photography.
