Thanks, been on this route. I hiked the JMT in August. Most beautiful spot? Oh so many. Closer to Yosemite, I would say 1,000 island or Garnet Lakes. Upper Cathedral is hard to beat though.
Late December isn’t ideal since the area is usually covered in deep snow, and Tioga Road is closed. Winter camping or snowshoeing could potentially work if you are highly experienced, but check Yosemite’s conditions first. This route is better done in the summer or early fall.
