First of all CONGRATULATIONS!! Secondly, regarding the predictability discussion; I’m usually not that concerned with a predictable plot, there are very few satisfying plots that can be told (on a structural level) and I’m solidly in the camp that says the execution of the plot is the important thing. That having been said I think the feeling of predictability *is* accentuated in tragedy. I can’t remember where I read this but I remember the line, “The key to writing tragedy is that it has to simultaneously feel avoidable but inevitable.” You have to see how things are going wrong, know that it could be better and see it fall to pieces anyway to catch the classical feeling of tragedy. This means a tragic plot will inherently be predictable.
@@HannaHsOverInvested ok, I can see that a valid kinda meta-plot prediction as a writer. Vi and Jinx having a beautiful moment, how could this be screwed up? The other side of that though, is in the end it feels almost deterministic. Using the above example, Vi can't tell the cop that her sister is Jinx, Cait isn't going to just not come along wherever Vi is going, in Jinx's black/white thinking enforcers are the people that killed her parents so Cait is one of the people who killed her parents, it's just going to go bad because that's how things are always going to end up from the given starting point. Normally when someone tries to do a tragedy I can argue with the writing - I don't buy the motivation, I don't think cause and effect are going to turn out that way, whatever. But I can't argue with Arcane. Everything feels inevitable, like a fore-ordained doom coming to pass, but which we didn't know in advance. Also I've known quite a few people with BPD and Jinx is uncomfortably believable in her mix of symptoms. My anger issues frequently arise in similar fashion to Vi's especially when it comes to Powder due to avoidant vs anxious attachment. Across the board the characters feel very real. And the ending is very torn from the headlines with respect to terrorism and the dynamics between oppressed and oppressor peoples. So, yeah, I can see why it would be predictable in a way. Especially looking at it through the lens of a writer's approach to plot. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
Caitlin gets so much bad press. Girl was kidnapped by her crush's psycho sister, and was suppouse to sit and let the therapy session unfold nvm that the patient was loaded in mind altering drugs, brandishing a weapon and asking her crush to kill her so she could "go back to what they used to be".
But Jinx never asked Vi to kill Caitlin, Vi assumed. One of many incorrect assumptions Vi makes in that scene. Jinx only asked her to, "make her go away, please. Send her on her way . . ."
@@JennFet ah, but that was the point. Jinx could have easily said, "kill her," if that's what she wanted. What she really wanted throughout this scene is to see what Vi thinks of her. If Powder came out with a platter and said, "I made her a snack," do you think Vi would have been terrified that it was Caitlin's head? Of course not. Vi is adamant in her words that Powder is still in there, so Jinx had to confirm her suspicion that Vi knew she wasn't Powder by watching her reactions. Which she does, very closely, each time she leads Vi to make an assumption. As you said, not everything has to be said directly. Show not tell. Vi wouldn't tell, but she certainly showed.
The girl who helps Jinx is Sevika. She was Silco's right hand and enforcer, you saw her plenty of times in season 1. She fights Vi twice and is generally just around Silco a lot.
If it was predictable I don't think there would be so many theory crafters out here trying to figure out what's going to happen as well as the twists and turns from the first season. But to each their own.
Guessing what could happen is endless. I could guess how a rom com couple will have their 3rd act break up until the cows come home, but they still have a third act break up.

That dinner plate caitlyn head reveal was predictable imho but it still had me feeling nervous. That’s why execution is important. Edit: some people seem too offended at the word predictable after reading some comments. People forget predictable isn’t really that negative.

Vi is in self-destruct mode. She lost her sister twice and this time for good. She also lost, in her mind, Caitlyn because Jinx killed her mother and the rest/most of the council. Vi feels responsible. She is utterly broken at this point.....and Jinx is enjoying every minute of it.
I’m genuinely tempted to rewatch your reactions and see how much long term predictions you made and got right. Some are quite obvious like the time jumps and that Vi and Jinx/Powder would end up facing each other, as those can be already seen in the intro. And I specifically am talking about longer term predictions, because predicting something just before it happens when a story is progressing towards that point, doesn’t make a show predictable but rather consistent with cause and effect.

Once anyone has consumed a lot of media, a lot of stories in all forms, it all becomes predictable. There is nothing new under the sun. But if you find that predictability itself takes away from your enjoyment of stories, I don't know what to say. Maybe you're burned out a bit and need to palette cleanse with a different activity for a while. If one likes stories one tends to like storytelling. And a story well told is the best. I'll take a story that I've read, heard and lived a hundred times over a completely novel story, if the first one is being told masterfully while the other is being told horrendously. That being said; After having gotten to the predictability point with all western media I was consuming a couple of decades ago, I had my first encounters with storied from a different cultural background unknown to me. That being manga from Japan at the time. If you're looking to find stories that lack predictability, other than "LOL! Random storytelling!", I'd recommend seeking out stories from a culture you've not consumed a lot from.

Saying stories are bad because they're predictable is pretty dumb. If you really are a theater school student, I'm astonished you don't know the history of Shakespeare's fame in his time. Maybe you should study more. Or maybe, as a writer, you should study literature, not whatever the things theater school teaches you.
I can say that season 2 is going to be the most impactful season for our eyes to witness a broken Vi and issues in her life to fix up or mess up some more throughout the season 🥲 also so far their isn’t that many new characters in this show, but I can be wrong. Since the ones you questioned are being Singed, Sevika and one of Silco’s henchmen. If my memory serves me correctly, during the fight ring montage with a Broken Vi, the first character she face is the same guy who she uppercut in Season 1 act 1 final episode till act 2 she did a prison move to dislocate his jaw with a food tray.
The jinx as a symbol thing I really didnt see coming so I am very excited. And yes, broken vi will be super interesting. I just don't want it to be, the worst thing that could happen always happens.

It was supposed to show us that Jinx saw Caitlyn as a threat because she felt like Caitlyn was taking her sister away from her because vi and Caitlyn were falling in love with each other. It’s obviously sad and annoying but Jinx was always gonna snap it’s just unfortunate that her jealousy and need for her sister was the main thing that pushed her over the edge. I personally think it’s actually a decent character point and definitely not a reason to hate her but people perceive things differently so it’s not a bad thing you see it that way just different compared to most opinions I’ve seen.

That is the way Pouder/Jinx was written constantly. She always just heard part of conversations and misinterpreted stuff, not just with Catlin but with Silco and her old friend group too.
I can see how it can be predictable, because the plot lines were setup nicely; except for Mel, I wasn't sure what intentions she really had and wasn't expecting her mother. For the second season, most people knew it was going to be a full-scale war after Jinx attacked the council, but it has great characters and animation.
I respect your opinion, and the world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same things but predictable doesn't mean bad. I have seen/read plenty of things that no one predicted but the writing was dogshit and some of the most consistent things I have seen in fiction have been predictable. I can understand people who like surface level initial shock value not vibing with Arcane that much.

I thought that I would have predicted a lot of the things that happened in Season 1 since I was fairly familiar with LoL lore, but I found myself quite wrong many times. That said, Season 2 hasn't been cooking as long as the *checks notes* 8 or 9 years they took to craft Arcane, so who knows? I am suspect that even if you took The Hero's Journey issue very seriously, Season 2 will still have some unexpected turns and conclusions.
I'm not afraid of giving my honest thoughts and I'm not afraid of being wrong. I love learning and growing. I don't pander to make other people feel comfortable.
The only things we League fans/players know for certain is who among a specific VERY short list of people isn't going to die, since this all takes place in the past of current League. Other than that, it's just confirmation of things we suspect but haven't been officially put out, seeing if any more familiar faces show up along the way and legitimately seeing exactly how things developed to get to the point they currently are. But for those of us in the know, and those who don't know... it's going to be a wild ride either way.
Pitfighter Vi being in episode one would definitely be a way to do it, and they can gradually unpack vi and cait falling out. But based on the screenshots of each act they gave us i think the plot will be more linear than that. Season 1 had too many flashbacks lol like beginning of each episode
Honestly, watch it and see if you are surprised. Even League players were surprised by some of the twists that happened. yes, some is predictable, but in somewhat unpredictable ways.
I actually think the jinx as a symbol thing could be surprising and fun. Also I didn't see vi being so broken so there is a lot of potential there too.

My prediction is it's all going to go to shit and everyone will be in a worse situation than they were in the beginning. It's going to be slightly better for a little while and there'll be a tiny glimmer of hope and then that hope will be snatched away in my heart will be crushed.

I don’t think predictable at all. To say it’s mostly loved or watchable for its beauty is harshly discrediting to the character development or story telling across the season. I think if it can get you as comfortable and familiar and invested in as many characters in the show as it did in a 9 episode run that the writing is one of the main drivers for the shows success. I think your experience for the show was different than many others.

Regarding predictability, I think season 1 earned my trust on that front. I always thought I knew where they were going with the story and I was almost always wrong. Of course, I know nothing about League of Legends, so maybe the experience was different for those who know the backstory.
I know nothing about League of Legends either and people get really caught up on my saying that I felt the show was a bit predictable and not later on how I said I was surprised that Jinx was being made a symbol, and that wise, descent would be extremely interesting

It's technically a prequel, so it is predictable because we already know how these characters turn out. We know Caitlyn, Jinx, Vi, Singed, Jayce, Viktor, and Heimerdinger all eventually become champions in the League of Legends, with each becoming a representative of their city/country/neighborhood/species/whatever. And we know what Jinx's relationship looks like with her sister after the series is over: completely damaged beyond repair, homicidal, and with competing interests.

No no. I loved the first 3 episodes. And I enjoyed the rest of the season save the final moment. That felt cliche. I am hopeful for the next season after seeing jinx is thought of as a hero/symbol and vi being so broken.
I think this season is going to surprise you quite a bit, what you think is going to happen when watching those trailers is not what's actually going to happen. A lot of other crazy stuff is going to go down. I'm pretty sure that VI scene is gonna be act 2, so probs episode 4.
I hope you're right! I've heard that that scene is from act 2 and that has been confirmed by the powers that be. I guess you'll have to do some pretty messed up stuff and act one then!
@HannaHsOverInvested my own theory on how it's gonna go, without any spoilers from video game stuff, is act 1 cait will take the strike team into zaun. Act 1 will end with the jinx and Vi confrontation we see in the trailer and something will go wrong and jinx will not be taken in. This will lead to cait and Vi falling out. Possibly over how zaun is being treated and then vi will be doing the pit fighting zaun stuff for most of act 2 while other things progress the plot. Noxius is going to have a bigger presence in piltover now. Ekko will be doing some stuff in act 2 probably. Then in act 3 noxus will try to take over and piltover amd zaun will have to unite to beat them and take their cities back. Resulting in everyone having to put their differences aside temporarily. The show will presumably end in a way that fits into how current piltover and zaun are presented. Obviously lots of other stuff will happen this season but I'm not gonna say cause those parts are spoilers I know cause of stuff from the game. I'm sure some stuff will happen that was completely unexpected even for league players as well.

I dunno if it's just me, but I think maybe being a writer sometimes makes us way more in tune with aspects of media that the average person wouldn't expect, and thus removes a bit of the magic. In this case, I feel like that's why Arcane was more disappointing to you than the majority of its viewers. For example, someone who's read and/or written hundreds of stories to the point that very little is unique or original to them anymore, versus someone with much less exposure watching the same show/movie. But I could be wrong? *Shrug*
They always deliver on the promise though. I guess that's more of what I say when I compare something to Hallmark is not the writing cuz obviously the writing in the show is way better than Hallmark. It's more that Hallmark promises to deliver a certain type of story, and when I film that first video and kind of still now I think that the story arcane is proposing is everything goes wrong, just like Hallmark is everything goes right.

@@HannaHsOverInvested I remember writing a short review of the series when it first came out. What floored me about it wasn’t the plot. There is nothing new there. So, in that sense, I get what you mean. What floored me were the emotional themes and how those themes affected the plot, rather than being the plot itself. Betrayal, love, ambition, regret. They are all there in a very palpable way and you could feel how they were causing characters to make decisions against type. Decisions that they would not normally make. But the biggest theme of all was trauma. Trauma with a capital T. In particular childhood trauma. You could see how it’s effects echoed through time and burned their way into the psyche of almost every character, good or bad. I don’t know about you but, for me, beholding that was a trip.
Honestly, your take on Arcane being a bit boring makes me wonder what you consider to be an exciting show. I'll take logical progression and anticipation over randomness any day.

I don't believe you're a theater student and still don't get the theater culture: as far as I know, the real theater audience always go to the shows they liked AT LEAST TWICE. Stories being predictable isn't a factor for the theater formats. The acting and the quality of the scripts are the heart of theater. Then why would you care about Arcane being "predictable"? Is it well acted and well performed? Yes, on both aspects of voice-acting and visuals. Is it well-written? Yes. That's why people on YT makes a lot of eager analyses. Then WHY? Why do you feel the need to, as you said, "nit-pick"? I think, it's because jealousy and laziness. Arcane is a great story, and you can't accept what it did right and, somehow, it HAS TO have some flaws. Otherwise, why would Arcane wrote by two newbie writers and a veteran writer helping the two and they're successful writers, while you're not? And the laziness of not learning from what Arcane did right, well, it's just part of being human. We are lazy by nature. Why would you do more work while nit-picking is way more easier, right?

Congratulations with your theater classes. I don't know if you have, or still planning, to watch/react the new Borderlands movie. As much as I would like to hear the perspective from someone who hasn't played the games; I feel it's fair to warn you: its a sick movie...as in its best to watch it while sick. It's entertaining enough to watch, but bad enough that it's ok to fall asleep.
Season 2 won’t be like that at all considering that we never see the end of the conflict in the game because we literally can’t. In season 2 anything can happen
I did also not like Caitlyn. Not because she always showed up at the most inconvenient moments possible, but because she is the most boring and goody two shoes character in the entire show. Literally every other character got his or her hands dirty at some point in the show, while she was basically just tagging along. She just seems to be exactly the kind of person who would do virtue signaling the entire time but make a complete 180 when s**t actually hits the fan.

Vi is in self-destruct mode. She lost her sister twice and this time for good. She also lost, in her mind, Caitlyn because Jinx killed her mother and the rest/most of the council. Vi feels responsible. She is utterly broken at this point.....and Jinx is enjoying every minute of it.

I’m genuinely tempted to rewatch your reactions and see how much long term predictions you made and got right.
Some are quite obvious like the time jumps and that Vi and Jinx/Powder would end up facing each other, as those can be already seen in the intro.
And I specifically am talking about longer term predictions, because predicting something just before it happens when a story is progressing towards that point, doesn’t make a show predictable but rather consistent with cause and effect.

Once anyone has consumed a lot of media, a lot of stories in all forms, it all becomes predictable. There is nothing new under the sun. But if you find that predictability itself takes away from your enjoyment of stories, I don't know what to say. Maybe you're burned out a bit and need to palette cleanse with a different activity for a while. If one likes stories one tends to like storytelling. And a story well told is the best. I'll take a story that I've read, heard and lived a hundred times over a completely novel story, if the first one is being told masterfully while the other is being told horrendously.
That being said; After having gotten to the predictability point with all western media I was consuming a couple of decades ago, I had my first encounters with storied from a different cultural background unknown to me. That being manga from Japan at the time. If you're looking to find stories that lack predictability, other than "LOL! Random storytelling!", I'd recommend seeking out stories from a culture you've not consumed a lot from.

unfortunately i cant comment on the predictability of the show because I knew the game lore before watching it, or at least enough to understand how characters would pan out for the most part.

I can say that season 2 is going to be the most impactful season for our eyes to witness a broken Vi and issues in her life to fix up or mess up some more throughout the season 🥲 also so far their isn’t that many new characters in this show, but I can be wrong. Since the ones you questioned are being Singed, Sevika and one of Silco’s henchmen.
If my memory serves me correctly, during the fight ring montage with a Broken Vi, the first character she face is the same guy who she uppercut in Season 1 act 1 final episode till act 2 she did a prison move to dislocate his jaw with a food tray.
The jinx as a symbol thing I really didnt see coming so I am very excited. And yes, broken vi will be super interesting. I just don't want it to be, the worst thing that could happen always happens.

It was supposed to show us that Jinx saw Caitlyn as a threat because she felt like Caitlyn was taking her sister away from her because vi and Caitlyn were falling in love with each other. It’s obviously sad and annoying but Jinx was always gonna snap it’s just unfortunate that her jealousy and need for her sister was the main thing that pushed her over the edge. I personally think it’s actually a decent character point and definitely not a reason to hate her but people perceive things differently so it’s not a bad thing you see it that way just different compared to most opinions I’ve seen.

That is the way Pouder/Jinx was written constantly. She always just heard part of conversations and misinterpreted stuff, not just with Catlin but with Silco and her old friend group too.

Looks like Vi's going through her season 4 Korra depression.
I can see how it can be predictable, because the plot lines were setup nicely; except for Mel, I wasn't sure what intentions she really had and wasn't expecting her mother. For the second season, most people knew it was going to be a full-scale war after Jinx attacked the council, but it has great characters and animation.

I respect your opinion, and the world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same things but predictable doesn't mean bad. I have seen/read plenty of things that no one predicted but the writing was dogshit and some of the most consistent things I have seen in fiction have been predictable. I can understand people who like surface level initial shock value not vibing with Arcane that much.

I thought that I would have predicted a lot of the things that happened in Season 1 since I was fairly familiar with LoL lore, but I found myself quite wrong many times. That said, Season 2 hasn't been cooking as long as the *checks notes* 8 or 9 years they took to craft Arcane, so who knows?
I am suspect that even if you took The Hero's Journey issue very seriously, Season 2 will still have some unexpected turns and conclusions.

I'm not afraid of giving my honest thoughts and I'm not afraid of being wrong. I love learning and growing. I don't pander to make other people feel comfortable.
The only things we League fans/players know for certain is who among a specific VERY short list of people isn't going to die, since this all takes place in the past of current League.
Other than that, it's just confirmation of things we suspect but haven't been officially put out, seeing if any more familiar faces show up along the way and legitimately seeing exactly how things developed to get to the point they currently are.
But for those of us in the know, and those who don't know... it's going to be a wild ride either way.

Pitfighter Vi being in episode one would definitely be a way to do it, and they can gradually unpack vi and cait falling out.
But based on the screenshots of each act they gave us i think the plot will be more linear than that.

Honestly, watch it and see if you are surprised. Even League players were surprised by some of the twists that happened. yes, some is predictable, but in somewhat unpredictable ways.
I actually think the jinx as a symbol thing could be surprising and fun. Also I didn't see vi being so broken so there is a lot of potential there too.

My prediction is it's all going to go to shit and everyone will be in a worse situation than they were in the beginning. It's going to be slightly better for a little while and there'll be a tiny glimmer of hope and then that hope will be snatched away in my heart will be crushed.

I don’t think predictable at all. To say it’s mostly loved or watchable for its beauty is harshly discrediting to the character development or story telling across the season. I think if it can get you as comfortable and familiar and invested in as many characters in the show as it did in a 9 episode run that the writing is one of the main drivers for the shows success. I think your experience for the show was different than many others.

Regarding predictability, I think season 1 earned my trust on that front. I always thought I knew where they were going with the story and I was almost always wrong. Of course, I know nothing about League of Legends, so maybe the experience was different for those who know the backstory.
I know nothing about League of Legends either and people get really caught up on my saying that I felt the show was a bit predictable and not later on how I said I was surprised that Jinx was being made a symbol, and that wise, descent would be extremely interesting

It's technically a prequel, so it is predictable because we already know how these characters turn out. We know Caitlyn, Jinx, Vi, Singed, Jayce, Viktor, and Heimerdinger all eventually become champions in the League of Legends, with each becoming a representative of their city/country/neighborhood/species/whatever. And we know what Jinx's relationship looks like with her sister after the series is over: completely damaged beyond repair, homicidal, and with competing interests.

Funny, not good plot. and you did not see the real twists like powder killing her whole family and Silco becoming a father figure. You're forgetting the brilliance and disregarding the mastery because you were able to comprehend the story as it was presented.
No no. I loved the first 3 episodes. And I enjoyed the rest of the season save the final moment. That felt cliche. I am hopeful for the next season after seeing jinx is thought of as a hero/symbol and vi being so broken.

I think this season is going to surprise you quite a bit, what you think is going to happen when watching those trailers is not what's actually going to happen. A lot of other crazy stuff is going to go down. I'm pretty sure that VI scene is gonna be act 2, so probs episode 4.
I hope you're right! I've heard that that scene is from act 2 and that has been confirmed by the powers that be. I guess you'll have to do some pretty messed up stuff and act one then!
@HannaHsOverInvested my own theory on how it's gonna go, without any spoilers from video game stuff, is act 1 cait will take the strike team into zaun. Act 1 will end with the jinx and Vi confrontation we see in the trailer and something will go wrong and jinx will not be taken in. This will lead to cait and Vi falling out. Possibly over how zaun is being treated and then vi will be doing the pit fighting zaun stuff for most of act 2 while other things progress the plot. Noxius is going to have a bigger presence in piltover now. Ekko will be doing some stuff in act 2 probably. Then in act 3 noxus will try to take over and piltover amd zaun will have to unite to beat them and take their cities back. Resulting in everyone having to put their differences aside temporarily. The show will presumably end in a way that fits into how current piltover and zaun are presented. Obviously lots of other stuff will happen this season but I'm not gonna say cause those parts are spoilers I know cause of stuff from the game. I'm sure some stuff will happen that was completely unexpected even for league players as well.

I dunno if it's just me, but I think maybe being a writer sometimes makes us way more in tune with aspects of media that the average person wouldn't expect, and thus removes a bit of the magic. In this case, I feel like that's why Arcane was more disappointing to you than the majority of its viewers. For example, someone who's read and/or written hundreds of stories to the point that very little is unique or original to them anymore, versus someone with much less exposure watching the same show/movie.

‘Hallmark’ and grey characters are polar opposites, methinks.
They always deliver on the promise though. I guess that's more of what I say when I compare something to Hallmark is not the writing cuz obviously the writing in the show is way better than Hallmark. It's more that Hallmark promises to deliver a certain type of story, and when I film that first video and kind of still now I think that the story arcane is proposing is everything goes wrong, just like Hallmark is everything goes right.

@@HannaHsOverInvested I remember writing a short review of the series when it first came out. What floored me about it wasn’t the plot. There is nothing new there. So, in that sense, I get what you mean.
What floored me were the emotional themes and how those themes affected the plot, rather than being the plot itself. Betrayal, love, ambition, regret. They are all there in a very palpable way and you could feel how they were causing characters to make decisions against type. Decisions that they would not normally make.
But the biggest theme of all was trauma. Trauma with a capital T. In particular childhood trauma. You could see how it’s effects echoed through time and burned their way into the psyche of almost every character, good or bad. I don’t know about you but, for me, beholding that was a trip.
Honestly, your take on Arcane being a bit boring makes me wonder what you consider to be an exciting show. I'll take logical progression and anticipation over randomness any day.
Wouldn't it be lovely if they made more happy, uplifting cultural works to give us all a break from reality?

After think for a second. I don't believe you're a theater student and still don't get the theater culture: as far as I know, the real theater audience always go to the shows they liked AT LEAST TWICE.
Stories being predictable isn't a factor for the theater formats. The acting and the quality of the scripts are the heart of theater.
Then why would you care about Arcane being "predictable"? Is it well acted and well performed? Yes, on both aspects of voice-acting and visuals. Is it well-written? Yes. That's why people on YT makes a lot of eager analyses. Then WHY? Why do you feel the need to, as you said, "nit-pick"?
I think, it's because jealousy and laziness. Arcane is a great story, and you can't accept what it did right and, somehow, it HAS TO have some flaws. Otherwise, why would Arcane wrote by two newbie writers and a veteran writer helping the two and they're successful writers, while you're not?
And the laziness of not learning from what Arcane did right, well, it's just part of being human. We are lazy by nature. Why would you do more work while nit-picking is way more easier, right?

I did also not like Caitlyn. Not because she always showed up at the most inconvenient moments possible, but because she is the most boring and goody two shoes character in the entire show. Literally every other character got his or her hands dirty at some point in the show, while she was basically just tagging along. She just seems to be exactly the kind of person who would do virtue signaling the entire time but make a complete 180 when s**t actually hits the fan.
