Fixing The Road... Well, No | This Is Why

  • A common question is, "Why don't you fix Oxford Canyon Road"? Well, it is fixed. The question is to what standard the road should be repaired. Is it ok to blow the occasional tire to elevate other priorities?
    The Dustups Ranch has many moving parts: logistics, shelter, and, Oh yeah, the whole desert forest thing. So long as all of those elements keep moving forward, I get closer to my goal.

    Shaun, I am so impressed with how you just keep pushing through obstacles and learning. The first couple of videos were hard to watch a guy that had never driven a pickup truck or towed a trailer. But you just kept going. Great work! Very impressive what you are doing and have accomplished so far. Thumbs Up!

    I enjoy these short videos where you can address what I’m sure are the numerous complaints/questions of “why don’t you just fix the road??” Sometimes you do fix it, and sometimes you’re not allowed to fix it, but just having the questions addressed like this is great. Keep up the good work.

    Hey Shaun, with tandem trailers you don't really need a jack. you can simply drive the good tire up onto a small ramp, block of wood or even a kindly shaped rock. All you need to do is raise the bad tire high enough off the ground to change it 🙂

    Owning large tracts of land here in the desert will always require constant road (and fence) maintenance. It never ends. This year we are getting kinda a free pass since there’s no real monsoon and no real destruction to washes and roads.
    Haha something about seeing an IBC being hauled out into the dry off grid desert land will always make my stomach drop lol. No one ever understands what a nightmare it can be to have to buy and haul water to your off grid land until you do it for a little while. Been there myself. Gets old fast 😂.

  • @nekononiaow

    You are absolutely right, it is pretty clear that the road should not be a priority given you are likely not using it more than a few days a month.
    Any work done on the road subtracts from works that have much more long term effects on water retention and livability of the site.
    When the site becomes livable and you start planning building permanent structure then those priorities may change but for now work on the soil and biology of the site is way more important.

    First of all, I'm glad you made this video. It's good to know you've made considerations and improvements with regards to the road access to the site. Using the skid steer is basically what I had in mind, or a bulldozer even. Mainly, just a way to flatten out, remove debris, widen, and fill in.
    Have you considered drilling holes for measuring the water level in the soil? I'm thinking, it's possible that the pressure might force the groundwater into the hole, and give somewhat inaccurate readings, but I wonder if there's a way to check the before and after levels, and compare to a "control" location. I'm not exactly sure how wells work, but I imagine that basically, if the water level rises, your making progress.
    I'm also very curious about the storm that just rolled through last week here in Texas. I checked the radar, and it basically completely missed us, but we still got a downpour. So I'm wondering, if what we got didn't even register on the radar, it must have been torrential where it was strongest. It basically covered the entire area in-between San Antonio and Mexico. I'm not sure how far west you really are, but I hope you got some of that.

    Two things that I have wondered:
    1) With corrugation on dirt roads, I wondered if dragging a curtain of chains behind a vehicle every now and then would do the trick of smoothing vs. having to make use of a grader quite as often?
    2) With AI and robotics, could one 'scan' 100+ rocks and and AI tell you how to stack them so they fit best together without mortar? Makes more sense for actual walls or houses of stone where you'd have to gather a large amount of rocks first.

    • @ketruc485

    • @AndyTheCornbread
      @AndyTheCornbread 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The best solution I have ever seen for fitting randomly shaped 3D objects into oddly shaped holes was a solution that used Least Squares. You could use AI and a Least Squares approach to find a best fit, the problem with it is that the problem is probably NP meaning you have to try every solution in order to see which one is best and that requires a lot of processing power and time and if you have enough rocks it wouldn't complete in our lifetime. If you take a heuristic approach and find a "decent" solution but one that might not be "the very best possible one after all possibilities have been tried" you could probably come up with something passable but in the end just having a guy out there eyeballing it will be faster and cheaper for probably a long time to come.

    • @schalkvandermerwe3838
      @schalkvandermerwe3838 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AndyTheCornbread - thanks, after I posted I realised very quickly that it could become uncomputable. I don't know much about math, but if I looked at 10! vs. 100! or 10^10 vs. 100^100, it quickly becomes very large numbers. Then again, if it was a robot and coveyor system for large boulders, it could run a 'best fit' for the next 5 rocks, complete and run it again. Also, if you're one layer up, it technically doesn't have to remember the rocks already layed but merely the composite of the top of the first layer's relief...

      @schalkvandermerwe3838 Seems like chunking the task would avoid the uncomputability problem. Have the ai looking for a good enough fit, defined somehow beforehand, for limited parts of the build... Which rock or rocks, of the last n rocks I've seen, fills this spot adequately?
      Somehow this reminds me of writing lyrics. I'd say this is very close to how humans do a lot of things

    When I have to have tires removed for any reason, I always ask the store NOT to crank the lugnuts on with all possible power. If I get a flat tire and have to replace it I don't have one of those power drills and I probably won't be able to get it off by hand. (From experience)
    They always give me a funny look, and say "OK". I don't know if they still crank it down or not, but at least I gave them something to think about.

      There’s definitely a certain amount they HAVE to torque them to. Get ya a metal pole to keep with your spare. The longer the better. Gotta be hallow and metal. Slide it over that wrench and get on the far end of it. Leave your tires on the ground to break free. Then raise it and take them off with your fingers. I hope you never have to worry about it though. Good fortune to you forever Veramae.

      Just an FYI. That wheel can be halfway fixed with a 2x4 and a 5 lb sledgehammer. Maybe not use it as a full time on the road tire, but as a spare it would be fine. Seeing how going down Oxford road is slow the wheel wouldn’t be stressed, like it would be at highway speeds.

      Generally speaking, torque specs are adhered to in a shop. You can't really go over or under by much. Overtorque will break the stud, undertorque will get loose and fall off. Unfortunately, you just have to be able to get it off by yourself.

    Great point at the end...its about resources, what is valuable and when. Where I grew up there were lots of roads that bad and even worse but unless we needed to get something big down them they stayed that way. Besides for "quick trips" we often just used dirt bikes. Also we had some "drag bars" we put behind some of the bigger trucks or machines that had to travel these roads. Wore down the high spots and knocked some of the large rocks away and kept the center from getting too high from the ruts...(Not sure what the correct term is for those). Nice to watch the journey and especially the explanations of the what and why...

    I want to echo @nomad74777. There are moments where I think, “City/software guy - I am concerned for your $$ and safety.” When the gentleman changing the tires said, “ were very tight.” you commented about doing it with the tire in the air. Ummm Why would you? But you redeemed yourself by putting the lugs in your pocket, and your gloves on!
    Make that a a habit. Gloves in the door pocket, open door, put gloves on . . . If you don’t need them, they go in your back-pocket until you return to the truck and then you . . . Also, like software, you want to have redundancies, so minimum of two pairs in truck. (I am somebodies’ mom and Mimi/grandma.)
    I want you to succeed - and am proud of you all the time for being willing to help other people learn. 🎉

    For tire swapping, bearing packing, bearing and race replacement etc. for your truck and trailer a set of deep 1/2" drive sockets, a 25" long 1/2" drive breaker bar, and a 1/2" socket wrench will speed things up for you. Those little tire irons work OK right up until they don't and then they bend or strip or both. You will need the tools eventually for equipment repair anyway. Test all your tires and if you can't spin the socket wrench while it is fully seated on a lug nut on any of your vehicle tires using the deep sockets, get a small 1/2" drive extension that allows you to do so. That dust if it's anything like our dust will dirt weld your lugs and your rims in place. A sledge hammer and a block of wood will go a long way to help getting tires off without damaging the rims. None of that is a "must have" but if you are in country that is hard on tires(sure seems like it from the videos) it will make your life a lot more pleasant. I have found a wire brush for cleaning lugs off is also a very nice to have in dusty dirty country. Good call on buying a good truck jack! Also, even if you were allowed to take a dozer to that road, if you have ever seen how badly a dozer tears up a road you will realize you would need a grader and packer as well to make it worth doing. Some things, while they may be nice, just aren't worth the expense if what you are doing currently is working for you.

      @@dustupstexas oh I see. I thought you owned on one side of it. But if it’s public you have an easement on both sides. Nobody will care you widen it away from the slope. Get on GIS find out who owns it and call them and ask them if you’re that worried about it.
      I would think maintaining a roadway out there is the same as it is here in the river bottoms. Us farmers are always digging out the ditches and fixing the flooded out parts of the road. No matter who owns it or perpendicular to it. Flooding and rock slides/falls cause damage that demands attention. Land owners are aware of this when we own land in “hazard” zones. Look at it like this, if that guy came out there one day and seen the township/road commissioner widen and graded a crown into that road but only near his property what do you think he would say? Ok now call the road commissioner and get to figuring out what can be done by the government. I’m going to tell you now he’s going to suggest if it’s maintenance you should do it yourself as long as you’re not changing much or the drainage. Public roadways have to have drainage and be cleared. If it’s private and you’re on an easement I would talk to the land owner. But instead of widneing it try to get it re routed to the top of that ridge.

    What are all the plants that show up in the background in your videos? It looks like mostly the same type of plants. Are they the same plants as on the side of the mountain where you were placing to one rock dams to spread out & slow down the water when it rains. Have you considered planting any native grasses with long root systems ( spreading out seeds) in those areas behind those dams? You might get lucky & some might grow.
