Somewhere in the last decade or so they found fossilized dino poop with grass, so it's definitive there was grass around during the time of the dinos. Which actually explained why some early mammals had teeth similar to grass grazers Edit: Pretty sure it was in or before 2005, that's where I find most of the articles.
