I think John being there was particularly good writing. His family didn’t accept him for who he is so he wouldn’t spend it with them. And Jane happened to be a brilliant writer. He’s a book agent so if you notice she’s telling him about her story in that Xmas scene and the next Xmas she’s got it published and it’s a hit. His being there fits. (Great reaction, loved your instincts... come on Riley)
EXACTLY. While Abby did have a right to feel the way she did, we also have to understand that Harper was scared to death that her parents wouldn't accept her. It's something that a lot of same sex couples relate to. We often have to sneak around and hide who we and our significant other are, no matter how much we don't want to.
@@em-pr5jvTrue true. I mean Harper never meant to hurt Abby and had to keep up her appearance for her family. But at the same time, Harper could've handled things better, like hanging out with Connor all night (who clearly still had feelings for Harper) and really distanced from Abby a good portion of their time their? It was a little messed up. Again, I know this wasn't easy for Harper, but at the same time, it was just as bad for Abby.
I love how your watch rejected the straight-girls-greeting and was like "I'm out"! I felt so uncomfortable for Abby that I had a bit of a melt-down, especially after the change from one bar scene (fun, cozy, happy place) to the other and Harper's morning attitude... Ugh. But the humor of the movie, Jane's precious soul, and Riley's OMG!HOTNESS definitely healed all wounds! And I understand and can relate to Harper's fears. It's incredibly painful to watch her get entangled in her past and her "image" while Abby is getting kick after kick (even if some are pretty hilarious) but she does love her so I'm glad they had their happy ending. Happiest Season 2 focused on Riley, pretty please? Once again, watching this "with you" made it 10 times better. Also, it was nice to see someone laughing at the brutal jokes too so I didn't feel so mean haha
Watched the film yesterday so I would be prepared for your reaction and honestly enjoyed it more watching "with you" than I did watching normally. I would have liked a little bit more of a central plot line tying the scenes together other than just the coming out personally, as well as them actually showing Harper and Abby in love other than them saying it occasionally while Harper treated Abby badly for most of the film. but like you said, it was pretty amusing and it's nice that it exists :)
This movie certainly wasn't a happy Christmas movie, but it was based on a real experience and certainly one plenty of closeted LGBT people are going to go through. The hate Harper gets is ridiculous (especially when 99% of it is only due to people obsessing over Aubrey Plaza and wanting Riley to be more relevant in the movie) and I'm so so glad that she eventually got to process this and get her happy ending with Abby, especially when they were so in love that Abby wanted to marry her and despite having been together so long and Harper desperately had been hiding her family situation so well Harper was so smitten with Abby that she forgot about it for a moment. I need Happiest Season 2 to be the goofy Christmas movie we're all craving where they're planning their wedding while dealing with Harper's crazy family. And have Riley there with a girlfriend so everyone can stfu about her and Abby when they literally had zero chemistry and the only reason they interacted was so they could both process their experiences with Harper, like nothing about their interaction had the potential to be more than friendship at the most. Jane is wonderful and seeing "Jane's weird book idea" be such a huge success was so precious.
tysm for this comment I swear everyone struggles to empathize with Harper and her struggling with being in the closet and how scary it is to come out so I felt for Harper and tried to give her the benefit of doubt most times.
@@phoebehuynh8882 I've seen way too many comments calling Harper a toxic abuser for being stuck in a closet with a family full of huge expectations. She struggled so much and of course some of her actions weren't great, but none of them were to intentionally hurt Abby, they were all just because Harper was so scared and it was heartbreaking for both of them. I'm so not here for any Harper slander, Abby eventually understood her, and that was all that mattered.
@@phoebehuynh8882 Also I'm convinced that none of this "Harper is toxic, Abby should be with Riley" would exist if they'd cast an unknown actress into the part of Riley. 🙃🙃🙃
No, I disagree. I don’t understand why people would wants Abby to be with Riley, sure they bond and share the same thing about Harper. But I don’t see reason why they should end together, just because Abby relationship with Harper is not going well the way it is. Plus I see no spark between them. But I don’t think Abby was or have any interest in Riley and I don’t think, Riley does either and I just think Riley fingers out that Abby is Harper girlfriend and not her roommate. And just trying to give Abby some company and understand her situation. The name Sloane called Abby was Sappho. She was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from the Isle of Lesbos. She may have been gay.
