Best review of the R4 I have heard. You have a way with words...thank you. I ordered one today. Will compare the sound to Hidizs AP80, which sounds good...but it's way too small. The big comparison will be to Fiio M23, which is supposed to be a great one!!! The size of the R4 is perfect...the Fiio is much bigger. If the R4 compares favorably with these 2 soundwise....done deal!!!

Nice review. How does it compare to the m300 and Sony a306 for portable use? (weight, pocketability, battery life... I've found hiby over quotes its battery life by a long way). Also sound quality? I'm looking for a practical portable DAP and currently an LG v60 seems like the best option with its ess sabre quad dac, 3.5mm headphone socket, sd card slot and excellent wireless audio (can even read ebooks on it and more. And it's cheap). Ive already got a decent A&K dap but it's not pocket friendly!
Its a great DAP I got one to replace my old LGV30+ as the fingerprint reader had failed and I suspected that it was about to die, I just moved my micro SD card over and I was good to go the R4 sounds great but its only weakness is with its Bluetooth as LDAC at full fat would lose connection every now and then but I got it for my wired IEM so Im not too bothered with that. Another feature I like is that it will act as a desktop DAC if you plug it into your computer.
What do you recomend honest, between R3 II and R4? Hi, I haven't tried R3 personally but few people told me that R4 does sound better, mostly fuller in the bassline. It also comes with support for streaming services which might not be important to you. But because of these things I would save and go for R4 personally. Cheers! 🍻

What to get a DAP or a Dongle... This is making the decision a bit harder. Since the best Dongles are getting so power hungry you also better carry a powerbank, but around a hundred they are getting very good already, like the new Onix Alpha Xi1.
I'm wondered about bluetooth performance, I had an older Hiby Dap (R6Pro?) that dropped connection to my earbuds more than I liked. How's the performance on the sending side? I love my iem's and headphones, but sometimes I want to hang out by the pool with a bluetooth speaker...
I have a Hiby R3 II whose sound I find wonderful, but the software is very rudimentary, and since I bought Apple AirPods Pro 2 that sound divine but the Hiby Bluetooth disconnects them at the end of each track. I'm going crazy. And Hiby Customer care does not know what to tell me more than to redo the pairing. The Hiby Bluetooth is terrible. Good luck.
I own two Sony DAPs. Both cost £199 without android. As I have an android phone and tablet, and my music is converted cds to mp3 320, I have no need for an Android music player. Also, unless I can replace a spent battery, I won't be buying another DAP.
You're right...i think using android on a player is rare, but listen music is often, my heart goes to R4 because is much new, but my brain tells me to get R3 .... am stil undecided.
And yes, in both you can't replace batteries, so for a poor person like me this is not good, this means after few years i must throw to garbage and buy new one :( .
@MARYOLIONHEART I still have a personal cd player that takes 2 AA batteries. I also own a cassette Walkman and a Sharp minidisc player-recorder. Both take 2 AA batteries. Unless they malfunction, all three are not disposable. However, with a 1TB memory card installed and my 800 plus cds in .wav form stored, my Sony DAP is used the most.
I really liked the MSEB thing, i haven't played with the EQ because I actually don't know how to properly EQ something lol, if you can share with me some page where I can kind of check presets, I would appreciate it

Cobalt is nowdays in line with these ~$100 DACs I mentioned in the video like Hidizs XO. This sounds noticeably better. Desktop DAC/AMPs still have the edge because they can pump more power and heat. If you use big headphones and have no need for portability, it's the way to go. But this is a fantastic portable alternative.

And my next project could be a Magnepan powered by those usd 200 less class D amp bridged! Can you imagine maggies driven by Fosi or Aiyama. Stupendous you spend almost all on speakers then less usd 500+ on your pre, mono amp and DAC! And the sound hopefully will be glorious, 2.7i should also rock a bit.
R6 iii is thinner? Line out + Gold jacks + Volume knob + More elegant and professional style. R4 looks more like a thick toy. If they were the same price, which would you buy?
If you're not interested in the Evangelion R4, the MSEB, PEQ and plugins then I would get DX180 over the R6 III as it is superior in every other category and has an even better volume knob and weighs a bit less and a bit smaller
2024 and companies still cant beat sound to comfort/price dap from Cowon J3. 70 gramms! Thinner and smaller than any phone. Buttons can be pushed trough cloth without seeing it. Playback for 50+ hours! And all of that was in 2010* for 70$ used. Also many people used it for 10+ years without any problems and repairs. Hiby r4 is still a huge brick. Yes price is good compared to others, but people say its medicore sound quality. Okay for price, but nothing wow. Maybe LG v60 or g7(if you dont need good camera or processor) for 150-200$ used.
I have only seen a handful of people saying not happy with sound. I've read more testimonies about hot units. I just received mine yesterday and it is quite nice for ~$250. Yes it is bulky but you know that going in. There are other options for "small" if portable is higher priority.
I used to have the Cowon J3. I completely agree about the form factor. However, there were so many different sound adjustments and DSP settings on that thing it'd make yer head spin. When I finally got a smart phone, it sounded better to me and I never looked back. YMMV
@@HareDeLune one cowon filter better than any other. Sadly, even in any other cowon player you could not use it in dac mode with yourr PC. Also smartphones so uncomfortable because of bigger sizes and weight, so I always look back to j3. Anyway j3 sounded worse, yes. It was cool device, the only thing it needed is better UI and some hardware upgrade to modern time.

astell and kern DAP's are better made and sounds really good, R4 compared to my AK70 mk2 felt like a cheap toy, so you are paying extra money for quality
Personally I think FiiO & Jade Audio's JM21 is more bang for the buck @ $179, most likely a better DAP too. But its spanking brand new so we'll have to wait and see when the reviews start popping up. I like that its 65g lighter & not ugly designed.

I've had 3 F20 Surfans over the years and I think it's time for me to upgrade to the HiBy R4.

Get iBasso DC Elite, it has 320MAX Ti DAC in it.
I think it's a much better value than dongles around $150.
Bluetooth (receiving) not working. Sound Quality is good. But its still disappointing because of Bluetooth. Maybe there is some fix not sure ??

It's an android based DAP so it supports both Spotify and Apple Music apps from the Play Store.

Comparable when SE output is used on R4. But balanced out on R4 is better (wider soundstage, more deteils).

It's a nice proposal but the battery life is beyond mediocre, probably because it'd locked to a class A Amp.
Heat is the other problem with class A. It will kill the battery.

Never ever suggest a manufacturer to should have priced something higher. Audio is too damn expensive to begin with. If anything R6 should be waaaaay less. FR
