    Really enjoyed this recipe and video. I have a pike trip coming up in Canada this summer and I've been tying a bunch of big flies. I've been working on a really simple perch fly and you just hit the nail on the head. Thank you

    Hi Paul! Awesome fly! I’ll be tying one up this week for sure 👍 Just a tip on the tear mender... I’ve never had mine clog up. When I’m done with it, I put it down and hover a finger over the nozzle. Give the bottle a few sharp squeezes which will spray out a very small amount, close the nozzle and just rub any excess off the top. I hope this helps 😎kindest regards, don

    Paul if your sensitive to epoxy using UV also for general gluing try using fly Tite head cement made from denatured alcohol made from plant leaves and is non toxic the maker is fly Rite hope this helps you out

    Use your Liquid Fusion to glue down your eyes with. I haven't found any product better for that, which makes the eyes more durable with multiple fish caught. It also doesn't have any strong smell to it, as some other glues, which can turn off fish. I also use it to tame the head fibers. But with both, you have to be patient and allow it to dry over night before proceeding to the next step or final trimming.

      Hi Ted, it's a good glue which I'm not allergic too. This was the reason I switched from gel super glue and epoxy, but I actually think it's better than both. I tend to use it more to coat the eyes, as that's my pain point as they are hard to keep on a fly. All the best,Paul

      Bigstreamers.com for nayat (snow runner). They ship all over and isn't that expensive 👍

    Awesome tutorial Paul, thanks for all the instruction on the bucktail. It took me awhile to learn that not all the hair is the same on a tail until I read some Bob Popovics articles. I learned even more today! When you say 60/40 or 30/70 the longer piece is tied toward the back and the shorter end is folded over to the rear, correct? I like the fact that you proof your narration too, no stone unturned as they say. I subscribed after I watched your chameleon pattern awhile ago. You have some skills my friend. Thanks again! 👍😎

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats correct. Short material is folded over the longer to build the taper

    I really enjoyed this video. That fly looks fantastic! I was wondering, would you fish that on a sinking line or sinking leader? I'm very much a newbie to the big streamer game but would really like to learn more about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

      @paul_monaghan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim, I fish these anything from a floater down to a sink 7. It really depends on the depth of water you are fishing and where the fish are. It's not a heavy fly and has a slow sink, but will sink faster if you use epoxy on the head. I like my fly to move slowly on the pause so that material pulsates so prefer to keep it light.

    What kind of glue do you use for eyes here Paul 😀

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tear Mender to form the head. Serious Glue to attach the eyes. I now use Gorilla Crystal Clear to coat over the top to protect them. You'll need a dryer though for that

    Hi Paul nice fly. If you don't mind I was wondering what are the symptoms you get if you use super glue or epoxy? Think something in my tying kit is giving me problems.

    • @paul_monaghan
      @paul_monaghan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gary, the allergy to superglue, epoxy and some UV resins made my eyes itch and swell up. So much so I couldn't open them. The allergy wasn't there at first but became a problem the more frequently I tied. Switching to solvent free fixed it for me

    Hey Paul!
    When reverse tying bucktail, why is it necessary to use the more "airy" part of the bucktail?
    I understand that when tying bucktail inn the regular way, that with the more "airy" parts it will stand up more when tightening. But i fail to see why you "need" to use it when reverse tying, wont it stand up simply because you are pulling it over itself?
    I quess i could try different parts when tying. But even though bucktail is fairly cheap, i dont want to wasted it when i can ask someone that knows!
    Thanks in advance and keep up with the videos.

      @paul_monaghan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a very good question and I could probably talk about it for along time. I very often reverse tie the middle fibres,, but this depends on what I want to achieve with the profile and the quality of bucktail I am using(they all vary, so you have to use your judgement). The less air in it the more difficult it is to control due to the stiffness. It's completely up to the tyer, but for me my preference is to use all the bucktail in different parts to make the tying process easier, create the profile I'm happy with and get my monies worth. Plus if I'm covering the head of this deceiver with nayat anyway then the mid to butt fibres are fine. Tying with bucktail is very subjective and you should go with what feels right to you.

    What is snow runner and nyat? Forty fairly new to pike flies and all the materials ect that go into it. I have been tying trout and salmon flies and recently got into pike/bass flies, cheers
