Oh man, so crazy seeing my video on your channel. I definitely enjoyed this challenge. Thank you so much for the feedback and always teaching me new things! I knew you’d like the coffee 😝 also, you nailed the last name 🙌
Even though David’s laundry video wasn’t the technical best of the bunch, the fact that he did use his phone and his immediate environment is awesome. It really shows there’s no excuse to miss a shot or not create something.
Totally agree. He pushed himself into a really hard challenge: use a common place, chose a boring subject and limit to a minimum of equipment... and at the end he came out of it with some nice ideas and good material. Well done David Lopez!
The one at 13:08... it hit me emotionally. Dang, a tear welled in my eye. Why? Not entirely sure. Which makes it all the more brilliant. It was subtle. It was sweet. It was lovely.
Is the best one. He realy understand the goal of cinematographic languaje that is create feelings, no fancy transitions or a excentric use of software are necesary. The rest can be in a TV comercial, but things like that can be in a festival. (sorry if my english is Bad, im not a native speaker)
PM, thank you so much for the challenge. Seeing others work has been AWESOME, and I would not have done it if you hadn't suggested it! Keep giving us challenges. It feel so good to be a part of a huge community doing the same thing. Love this sh*t!
Peter you've got a natural talent to teach, I would love to watch an extensive Peter McKinnon Photography/Filming Course. I enjoyed this b-roll contest and learned a lot from your comments!
I think this would be sweet if he also gave out new challenges every week. For example, one lens challenge or a challenge where once you start recording you can't move until you finish all filming.
I love how your critique video was different from others. Other ones feel the need to feel superior and be harsh on their critiques but you were so positive, supportive, and encouraging to all of them.
Great job everyone! For the inside laundry shot, you could wait til the laundry is done and film opening the door getting the laundry out. Could also have the camera in the basket and throw the clothes on top to end it
Please do more of these b-roll challenges/critiques!!! Even doing some photography critiques/challenges would be awesome too! I learned a lot just from watching other people's work. Thank you Peter for always inspiring us to do better and create!
This gave me so much more respect for Peter. When he used the laundromat footage shot on a cellphone he really appreciated the eye and not the equipment it was shot on. All of his critiques were very productive and none of it was "get yourself a $6000 camera, man."
Peter we need more of this type of video....You're inspiring millions globally, me too in (UK), watching you inspired me to initially start editing (by far nowhere close to you and probably will never be the next (PM) but the PM style is almost become Industry YT standard now. Watching these videos only highlights that your the standard setter. At least set a challenge once every quarter for your fanbase. Much respect god bless mate 🙌
*_i would like to see that B-roll of Peter Mckinnon, from the 1st video of his until the 8th year transitions of progress now._* that would be *awesome* to watch.
Again late to the party but what a proper stand up guy you are Peter, zero ego and so friendly and un-patronising very refreshing. All in all a nice human being.Well done mate.
Got to tell you , My wife and I love your vlog but this one was OFF THE HOOK!! With your knowledge, personality, kind hardheartedness, you are perfect for this. If only there was more time in the day to do all these jobs and still have time to be a great husband and father and sleep sometimes ;) All kidding aside, thanks for the great content, you are truly appreciated :)
That was wonderful - all the different points of view, different pacings, different ideas... And your commentary is very refreshing - it's really audible that you want to lift people up and inspire instead of showing who's the master and stomping them down :) Thank you, Peter!
Nice job everyone! My personal favorites were Nick's video (1st one you showed). Perfectly styled after Peter's videos. Honestly, looked like Peter had made it himself. Ramy (from Switzerland) awesome as well (10:52)...I personally liked this one the best even though Peter mentioned it wasn't exactly what he wanted (still my favorite). And Triston, nicely done! Really loved those bird shots and the way you captured everything...again, nice job to everyone!!
Peter I think this is an amazing way to bring the community together and a great way for us to learn not just from you but each other as well. And it could be a way of helping such amazing talented artists also get attention and maybe one day have an awesome communities of their own like this one. Loved the Five Clips Friday idea someone posted 👌 even if you decide not to do that please do more of these it was so fun I loved it. And longer videos are no problem just means we get more of your awesome energy heck yeah! 💪☕
This is the absolute best different tutorial that motivates beginner Cinematographers and really leads them to actually achieving good results sooner, I am literally blown away by how kind you are to people please keep that UP
*Omgggg thanks for reacting to my b roll!* Since I was switching files with my friend I think my timeline got messed up 😂oops.. Thank you for the feedback!
Love, Love, LOVE this segment!! So much fun to see all these creative people do what they love. I got chills after watching the one from the guy in his office. Good stuff Peter! Keep the B ROLL challenges comin!
Peter, this stuff is ridiculously helpful to young creators like myself. Right on, my man. Thanks for throwing this out there and walking through the entries giving your opinion. Better than a classroom. Huge community karma.
Loved this reaction/feedback segment and that he featured you and Audrey! Would have been cool if he'd compared Audrey's cut with yours! th-cam.com/video/UZkKgZWDV8Q/w-d-xo.html
I liked the one that didn't follow the "trendy" transitions. It stood out and had a better pace which made it more immersive. Whereas the other ones felt like they were just copy and pasting transitions and effects which made them all look similar and they didn't stand out. Traditional storytelling and transitions aren't a bad thing don't get caught up with fancy techniques, story and emotions come before all that jazz ;)
I think people abuse transitions, making them ineffective. Transitions aren't supposed to be the main element in cinematography imo. Like you said, the story should be more prioritized.
As someone who is JUST starting out with vlogging, this episode taught me a lot about proper B Roll and some tips to heed when shooting/editing it together. Listening to your advice is going to be one of my main reasons for success, man.
hey peter just passed to tell that i love the passion you talk about this! It's unique and the energy you put into things, are just epic to watch! thank you! for sharing! Cheers KEEP IT UP!
Wow, just freaking wow. Peter you are helping create some amazing videographers! Damn, im jealous, but inspired. In my view you are the best teacher around. Love your style and personality. I only have 30 videos on my channel and have never used b roll but I plan on it. I’m very new to this cinematic style and although my videos are primarily instructional videos I’m figuring out ways to incorporate these b roll shots, camera transitions, music etc. I just shot a video today with some b roll so hopefully I can incorporate some cool shots in this one. Thanks so much for all you do!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Pete ! I've been seeing alot of absolutely immaculate B-Roll videos all over TH-cam, and as a photographer now looking into creating quick B-Rolls first time ever..... this has felt a tonne less intimidating and I feel like i can make a start on this. Thank you
Unfortunately, I don't have the expensive gear to really make magic but talk about inspirational! That was just awesome guys! Peter, I love the enthusiasm you have for life and for helping others! Way cool man! I cant wait to view more of your content and learn. Thank you for taking the time to do this kind of stuff and I hope your journeys through life are excellent man! I just recently got into this filming aspect of TH-cam and I've got a long way to go! I have a 17" MacBook pro, I'm running Final cut pro x and using my Samsung Galaxy 7 on a small Joby tripod, I think I've got enough to take your techniques and make something happen! This is so fun, thank you for your inspiration Peter. You Rock!
Eyyy! Great to hear! But personally I think it’s not always about the gears..I think the best gears are the gears you already have, but then again it’s my opinion.
All you need is 60fps Footage, Slow Walking and Dope Footage, and you’ll be able to make B Rolls look fken awesome. Be resourceful, even if you had all the gear it’s nothing if you don’t know what you’re doing you wont get the same quality. It’s all about the effort
This should definitely be a series! Your input on the b-roll and watching the b-roll has opened my eyes foe the b-roll in my vlogs. 10/10 would recommend your channel for new or seasoned vloggers!
I love how when you comment on changing something you always add a comment on how you are working on it yourself so that you don't look omnipotent, and make the person feel a little less critiqued, and more like given a friend advice :D nice job
LOVED this challenge! I had a great time participating! Thank you Peter for inspiring me everyday! I made this channel recently, almost have 100 awesome subscribers and have improved each and every video because of you! Can’t thank you enough, Peter, I hope to reach your level one day and work with you!
I really enjoyed the community submissions! Maybe once or twice a month we can have a random challenge of your choice and the best ones gets shown on one of these sorts of videos :D
PSA: 7:48 he mentioned the iPhoneX being water proof. Mine was submerged in about 2" of water for about a second and died. Apple told me they should not be submerged! My S8 can go under no problem however. Just sharing for anyone wanting to try that.
Good video peter. I could easily watch a part2 of this. Sorry I missed the deadline, I think the hour calling on Twitter was a bit too last minute for me, maybe have a deadline date for participation if you do it again. Thanks again dude.
I think some of the best youtubers are successful in telling their stories because of their skill with b-roll. This was a great video that showed this, thank you Peter!
Def. do more of these, but i think you should at least pick 1 maybe 2 videos that you think are bad and actually critique them, so that folks can do a better job, don't just show the good, as we get plenty of that on your channel :-) also out links to the creators channels to help them grow?
Peter these kinds of videos like filmmaker contests especially if they are specific are not only really fun to watch but also they are really educational. Honestly I scroll all your videos in search of the "filmmaker reacts" or "reacting to" ...
Did you guys enjoy this massive episode?! Should we do more Video / B Roll / Photo Critique submission based stuff?! FUN!
Awesome!!!
Sure Did. Keep Up with The Good Work
Hell yes
yaaauuuuhhhhhhwwwwsssss
Peter McKinnon love from Pakistan
Oh man, so crazy seeing my video on your channel. I definitely enjoyed this challenge. Thank you so much for the feedback and always teaching me new things! I knew you’d like the coffee 😝 also, you nailed the last name 🙌
Nick Zamudio I really thought you nailed it Nick
Nick Zamudio man, you're video is just great and so sick!!! Keep it up Nick!
That was fantastic, Nick!
You did an awesome job dude. Subbed and look forward to seeing more!
Your B roll was amazing, loved it
Even though David’s laundry video wasn’t the technical best of the bunch, the fact that he did use his phone and his immediate environment is awesome. It really shows there’s no excuse to miss a shot or not create something.
Totally agree. He pushed himself into a really hard challenge: use a common place, chose a boring subject and limit to a minimum of equipment... and at the end he came out of it with some nice ideas and good material. Well done David Lopez!
That fits perfectly to the challenge theme because you just looked at someone doing laundry which you would've ignored irl
The one at 13:08... it hit me emotionally. Dang, a tear welled in my eye. Why? Not entirely sure. Which makes it all the more brilliant.
It was subtle. It was sweet. It was lovely.
GOD that was so beautiful. It was so graceful and subtle.
This one, at least imo, was absolutely the best. It felt the most unique.
That one just caught me off guard. Totally awesome🥺
Is the best one. He realy understand the goal of cinematographic languaje that is create feelings, no fancy transitions or a excentric use of software are necesary. The rest can be in a TV comercial, but things like that can be in a festival.
(sorry if my english is Bad, im not a native speaker)
The music choice was excellent
Peter I like that your kind to people in your critiques. Many others think being cruel makes them sound professional. Thumbs up man.
Omg YESSS! Won’t name names, but I’ve seen videos where critiques are really harsh and knit-picky on some things I thought were actually pretty good.
It's called positive feedback.
I missed this , please do this again.. I have like a bulk of B-Roll footage
I thought he did a really good job. He was awesome and super helpful.
I think the B Roll challenge really highlights the massive community you have built Peter, amazing stuff, more of these in the future please 🤛🏼
Definitely agree!
Chris Brockhurst Definitely

Chris Brockhurst totaly agree this is such an exciting way to involve your community and it was so much fun to watch. Awesome!

J. DONOVAN SMITH your name is freaking me out
J. DONOVAN SMITH 3
Would love to see this as a monthly series. Great b-roll!! 👊🏻
ExploreList That would be sick! We'd all put in work and really get creative
ExploreList yesssss

Completely agree this would be awesome 👏
Yaaaas let’s!

Im Projects thanks!!
Nick Zamudio nice work man
Whats the name of the beat used for the B roll ? Great job
breakfast guy was the best by far! the other ones Peter was just too nice to critic them harder I would say
Dude what kind of drink was that ?
Peter you've got a natural talent to teach, I would love to watch an extensive Peter McKinnon Photography/Filming Course. I enjoyed this b-roll contest and learned a lot from your comments!
Peter, I think everyone here would love to see you rate their work one day a week. Five clips Friday.
Who else thinks that's a dope plan?
eh Joe thats a good idea Joe.
Amazing idea
I think this would be sweet if he also gave out new challenges every week. For example, one lens challenge or a challenge where once you start recording you can't move until you finish all filming.
La Chaine Santé yes we could all use a little outside perspective.
Til Death Do We Travel yes 30 or 60 sec reviews. Could spread some love.
this should be a whole new series with you!
My thoughts exactly! Sooo much inspiration in just one video.
Tim Lundqvist once a week once a month once a year even!
Monthly would be good, not so much it would take over the channel. Maybe some others could do it too, Matti for example.
OneEyedPhotographer I'm excited, their will be more! Right peter!
yes! new series for sure. maybe you can have Matti on this too sometimes
I love how your critique video was different from others. Other ones feel the need to feel superior and be harsh on their critiques but you were so positive, supportive, and encouraging to all of them.
Absolutely loved this format today… So much fun!
background music at 10.49 ?
Michelle Cox Photography Super fun video!!!🎥😎
hey can you please tell me the background music name at 10.49 sec
can you please provide the link]
i found it thanks bro .And your intro is awesome. And i did not see any vlogs on your channel .you just tired by putting 3 videos.Make it more
Great job everyone! For the inside laundry shot, you could wait til the laundry is done and film opening the door getting the laundry out. Could also have the camera in the basket and throw the clothes on top to end it
Yeah but I’d probably use my phone because I don’t like my camera to be in hot clothes, you know what I mean?
really great idea that would have been an excelente close of the video ..
Please do more of these b-roll challenges/critiques!!! Even doing some photography critiques/challenges would be awesome too! I learned a lot just from watching other people's work. Thank you Peter for always inspiring us to do better and create!

Please do more of these, I really got inspired looking at everyone's work. Could have watched all day.
Definitely do more of these! We all learn from these critiques. Also, awesome submissions!
One of the most humble critique I've ever been watched.
The P-ROLL tho😂
Nico Bryan that’s how us Canadian’s roll.
This is all so inspiring! Great work, everyone!!
Hey, hope to get your feedback on a b-roll I made of daily worklife: th-cam.com/video/vEg9ny2CAGY/w-d-xo.html
Again late to the party but what a proper stand up guy you are Peter, zero ego and so friendly and un-patronising very refreshing.
All in all a nice human being.Well done mate.
Love this format! As a travel creator, that one in Switzerland was my fave. He is so talented!!!
I'm utterly impressed with the spinning sound effect you made for that egg, Peter! I had to replay it four times...no joke!
Rachel in Real Life I'm going to crop that out, tune it and use it in my videos 😂😂😂
So true!!! It was better than what I used in the video! Haha
Got to tell you , My wife and I love your vlog but this one was OFF THE HOOK!!
With your knowledge, personality, kind hardheartedness, you are perfect for this.
If only there was more time in the day to do all these jobs and still have time to be a great husband and father and sleep sometimes ;)

Breakfast, Peter McKinnon and a TON of awesome b roll - that's an awesome start to the day and some inspirational stuff too.

I always knew you were a fan of #nosmallcreator peter but the way you brought us all in on this, so amazing. Thank you. Grateful.
Loved this reaction/feedback segment and that he featured you and Audrey! Would have been cool if he'd compared Audrey's cut with yours! th-cam.com/video/UZkKgZWDV8Q/w-d-xo.html
So Great!
This is SO great!
Yes! Such a great way of highlighting, encouraging and challenging creators! Loved this!
I LOVED when you said, "I love birds"🤗 great speech at Vidsummit by the way... it was so inspiring!
Avocado? I thought that was a dragon egg.
Hahahah
I liked the one that didn't follow the "trendy" transitions. It stood out and had a better pace which made it more immersive. Whereas the other ones felt like they were just copy and pasting transitions and effects which made them all look similar and they didn't stand out. Traditional storytelling and transitions aren't a bad thing don't get caught up with fancy techniques, story and emotions come before all that jazz ;)
13:10 :)
I agree
exactly lol its hard to find someone with their own unique style that doesnt care what others thinks and lets the work do the talking.
I think people abuse transitions, making them ineffective. Transitions aren't supposed to be the main element in cinematography imo. Like you said, the story should be more prioritized.
This is definitely a series that should continue!
As someone who is JUST starting out with vlogging, this episode taught me a lot about proper B Roll and some tips to heed when shooting/editing it together. Listening to your advice is going to be one of my main reasons for success, man.
No joke the look of coffee mixing with milk or creamer is one of my favorite things 😍
hey peter just passed to tell that i love the passion you talk about this! It's unique and the energy you put into things, are just epic to watch! thank you! for sharing! Cheers KEEP IT UP!

13:18 - my dude, i instantly teared up, that was for sure the best one. emotionally connected.
3:10 For a second I thought he was putting milk in his coke...
Same 😅
Same. What was that ?
Khizar Ansari Milk and coffee!!
Haha sorry I like my coffee cold! #coldbrewforlife
Looked like iced coffee to me, who has Coke with breakfast? LOL
I loved this! We can learn so much from your critique. Keep this serie alive!
5:02 Woah guys, Peter can teleport.
ya i saw that hheh

I only have my IPhone XS and I just ordered a gimbal from Amazon. I can’t wait to get started! Use what you have!

Be resourceful, even if you had all the gear it’s nothing if you don’t know what you’re doing you wont get the same quality. It’s all about the effort
I been using my sony Vloggy for a while. Its not mega fancy like this but it does well for video.
Such a great challenge. My girlfriend told me about it. The sound effects on the first b roll sequence from Nick were amazing.
3:45 wow you are sound effects library Peter :p
This should definitely be a series! Your input on the b-roll and watching the b-roll has opened my eyes foe the b-roll in my vlogs. 10/10 would recommend your channel for new or seasoned vloggers!
I think it’s great giving feedback like this. A little constructive criticism goes a long way to getting where you want to be. Thanks bro!
Caleb Frink I agree
So much fun to watch and the critiquing was so beneficial to newer videographers (ie - me). 😉
*I'd love to see more Video & Photo critiques in the future!*
I love how when you comment on changing something you always add a comment on how you are working on it yourself so that you don't look omnipotent, and make the person feel a little less critiqued, and more like given a friend advice :D nice job

Ah-maz-ing! #nosmallcreator did it again!

It's like he critiqued mine, without critiquing mine. Learned a lot of stuff from others' b-roll as well. 👌
Loved the variation of styles and would certainly like to see more. It's quite easy to see your influence... You're an amazing teacher
PSA: 7:48 he mentioned the iPhoneX being water proof. Mine was submerged in about 2" of water for about a second and died. Apple told me they should not be submerged! My S8 can go under no problem however. Just sharing for anyone wanting to try that.
SinnfullDuck iPhone X is IP67 which means it is able to be under 3 feet of water for 30 min
Been in blue lagoon in iceland for hours swimming with the iphonex.. maybe mine is an xmeniphonex
Yea I know man. Just wanted to share my experience just in case it may save someone the trouble I had.

Daniel Nicholson ikr!! I felt the same when I saw him head bang to the tunes.
This was very interesting to watch and I think one can learn a lot by seeing your thoughts on other people's videos :)
Def. do more of these, but i think you should at least pick 1 maybe 2 videos that you think are bad and actually critique them, so that folks can do a better job, don't just show the good, as we get plenty of that on your channel :-) also out links to the creators channels to help them grow?
I'd like to see you talk my in depth about when to shoot in 30 vs 24fps. With video references.
This was so great!! So helpful for me as an aspiring filmmaker. Thanks, thanks, thanks. More, More, More!!!
Peter these kinds of videos like filmmaker contests especially if they are specific are not only really fun to watch but also they are really educational. Honestly I scroll all your videos in search of the "filmmaker reacts" or "reacting to" ...
Thanks a lot to every people that liked, reacted and watched my B-Roll, and thanks to Peter for this really good idea 🙂

3:10 at first, i was wondering : "Why is he putting milk in coke ?"
I didn't know it was coffee lmao
We actually drank a mixture of Coca-Cola and milk quite regularly when I was younger. We called it "brown cow", haha.
Peter, you’re so kind and gracious, I love your reviews! Keep it up.
