In their own 80 year independence war against Spain (1568-1648), the Dutch even sold ice skates to their enemy, the Spanish army. They made a good profit and they knew that the Spanish soldiers would not master the skill of speed skating anyway. The Dutch soldiers were fast as lightning skating on the frozen lakes and canals.

I think relations between the English and the Dutch were not so good because of the fact they were both 2 seafaring trading nations. Rivals. And the Anglo-Dutch wars, of which there were several (before the American revolution) didn't improve matters much. So relationships were always tense.

I worked for a while in the USA in the 90's. And I was stunned that nobody knew about this part of history. even in New York where you still can see the Dutch roots today, like Hoboken, Haarlem (Harlem), Walstraat (Wallstreet), Peter Stuyvesant, Henry Hudson and much more. (Yeah I know Hudson was British but on Dutch payroll ;-) ). Nobody knew and still don't know.
I was in New York a was reading from a Peter Stuyvesant statue what was on the plate. It was written in old Dutch. A man walked by and ask me: You can read that?? I said sure. He said I live all my live here and nobody knows what is written on the plate. I said. Well it is in Old Dutch and I translated it for him. This was far before the rise of the internet so a simple Google search was a no no ;-). But I was amazed that people walk day in day out near a statue and don't know what it is about.... He thought it was a statue from the sigaret brand guy btw ;-)
So he learned something that day ;-)
I like it that you are interested to find out your history...
Oh and btw.. If you want to know who transported slaves from Africa to America?? Not so good news, we did. We didn't care in that time. It was trade.. (a black page in our history book)

No the English language has its roots in Proto Scottish and North-sea germanic and yes the latter was mostly spoken in what is now the Netherlands and Belgium (Germany and Denmark too). But the people that spoke it(Anglo, Saxon and a few Frisians and Jutes) moved to Britain taking the language(s) with them, which eventually led to the Frankish language becoming dominant in the Netherlands which is a more middle Germanic language.

So Americans learning about the world is a great Couse. On the relationship with the English I want to say that now it's relatively good, even in Brexit times. Thankfully the Dutch/Belgian officers ignored Wellington most of the battle since he ordered a general withdraw at least three times. I really don't get why Wellington is still seen as a National Hero in the UK, he was absolutely dreadful as a commander.
Often Napoleon is criticized for attacking during bad weather, but he didn't attack because he was impatient, he attacked because the Anglo/Dutch army gave an opportunity by forming up on top or in front of hills instead of forming up behind them for cover. Some units lost as much as 80% of manpower due to French Artillery.
The whole point of the Battle of Waterloo was to hold, not to win, not to defeat the French, but to hold until the Prussians arrived to save their ass! Once they were present the French army was rufflestumped by the Prussians, not the British/Dutch.

At 9.30m the talk of the origin of dutch-english relationship. That this relationship between the dutch and the english were a bit difficult, originates also from that era. Both seafaring nations. First the dutch later the english, who became the dominating force to later evolve in the British empire. The dutch, as a small country, had to be smart, and wanted to trade and make money. The english, not only wanted to trade, but first and foremost wanted to conquer land in the name of the king. So the mindset of the english was first, kill all the people who resist, enslave the ones who surrender, take the land, all in name of the king. Erase the existing culture of the native indians, the reason why the dutch are not mentioned in history books, is because they resisted. They were on good terms with the indians and wanted to trade. New Amsterdam was settled by the dutch, and Wall Street was named because of the wall to keep the english out, and protect the dutch and some native indians as well. There we have it, so many centuries ago, 4 dutch -english wars, and even now in these modern times, the difference between the dutch and the english is obvious.
We, the dutch, small country, not many people, strugle to keep the land and our feet dry, always had to think in solutions. The english had their military force, and could bully their way into the world as a colonizer. They had natural recources wood for ships, and they had iron ore to make guns and canons, bullets.
So the mindset of the people of these two nations, lies deeply within their respective geographical position in the world, and in how large in numbers the population was. One difference now, in modern days is, the dutch are very inventive, looking to progress, more into modernising. The english are a bit more conservative, more of what is good is good enough. They tend to look more back in time, when brittain still ruled the waves, so on that sentiment they had their brexit, away from the EU. Which is their biggest mistake in this 21st century, as far as trade is concerned with the rest of the world.

The Dutch are great in having small great parts/roles in the world history. Our own battle for independence was the deaths nail on the coffin of the second Roman empire (spain), Willem the second (then crown prices to be, later king) played an important part in the battle of Waterloo. Opening up the far east/Asia for trade. Settling on and discovery of Australia and such.
Sometimes with and sometimes in competition with the British.
Although we had 4 wars with them, mostly naval (and of which the second the Dutch won and still is the biggest British defeat, naval and in own waters) in a shortish time span. We became great allies afterwards.

The Netherlands and Great Britain met again much later in a major conflict. The First (1880-1881) and Second Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa. A stain on Great Britains history was the establishment of prison camps for women and children. But that's something for a next episode.

    • @Euroka2000

The Netherlands, although sympathising with the Boers, were neutral in the Boer wars. It was a small army of approx. 60.000 Boers that resisted the British so they had to send 500.000 soldiers and even then could not win.
Indeed they locked up the Boer wives and kids in concentration prison camps where thousands of them died. That is why the Boers had to surrender in the end. A big black stain in Britains history indeed.
For GB these wars were an eye opener: they learned the hard way that their battle tactics were hopelessly outdated and urgently needed modernisation.
This lesson came just in time because WW I was about to start.

After the Glorious Revolution in 1688 or Glorieuze Overtocht in Dutch the two nations ended up as allies. This alliance would last a 100 years until the American Revolution. During this time the Dutch fleet diminished and the English fleet thrived. It probably started at Waterloo where Wellington placed a Dutch regiment in front of a hill instead of behind it. French artillery decimated the regiment, and the Dutch had to pull back, reorganised behind the British to go straight through them in a massive attack on the French. The Brits were stunned and apparently there is where the phrase "Dutch courage" was coming from. If it had anything to do with alcohol, well who knows.
Btw, this event is written by a Belgian reverend, I thought. Anyway, it was someone from a Belgian church who put it on paper.
Pmsl, Brits still think they are world leader....

The Dogger Bank is a large shallow sandbank area in the North Sea between the UK, NL and DK. Several important naval battles took place here. The one featured in this video obviously, one in 1696 and one in 1915 at the beginning of the WWI between UK and Germany which is probably the most famous one of them at this day and age - where Germany was defeated by the (UK) Royal Navy, but it was a relatively narrow win. German navy was generally underestimated up until this point and this battle has clearly shown the true balance of both naval forces of both countries and that the German navy really is a force to be reckoned with.

Heya Mr Vest, i really like your videos about the netherlands they are educating to most folks i presume, and as a dutch guy its fun to see how foreigners to the netherlands see the netherlands, however there are alot of darker sides wich i never see adressed, not only in your videos but in not one to be honest. You see we pay a shitload of taxes here. It is insane, One guy once calculated, that from each euro earned, 70%!!!! goes to taxes. its moronic. While bussineses, like the really big ones, dont pay taxes at all. Then there is this klimate hoax shit wich our government fell for big time, like most "left" countries did. Wich only make us pay more taxes. The people here are stripped from their cash like crazy. And most people say "well we have it good dont we?" Well yes, but of a country with this good economy we could have it alot better. Frikn houses problems all over. Our dumb ass government takes in revugees from all over the planet while we ourselves cant buy a house cuz there are none, and the revugeees once they get their status of "Dutchguy" get one appointed. Yes netherlands is nice, but the damn government lost its mind. We have more rules here then there are words in the dictionairy. We have a financial minister here wich is graduated in history class. A foreign minister wich is graduated in frikn drama class, i mean man, help us our damn country lost its mind!!

Not in modern times, although there was a lot of laughter and irritation after Brexit. In the times that the Dutch trade empire rivaled the British however, there was a lot of tension that often boiled over, hence why there were four anglo-dutch wars. We also invaded England, making that whole untouched since 1066 story a lie. The interference with Belgium wasn’t appreciated either and some of us never really forgave you guys for the Boer wars, Nieuw Amsterdam (New York), Nieuw Holland (Australia) and Nieuw Zeeland (New Zealand), not to mention that time when it took Britain, France and two German city states ganging up on us to defeat us. That time where we sailed up the Thames, destroyed a major fleet and stole the British Capital ship is very nice to remember though.

@@michael_177 1688, William III of the Netherlands invaded to depose the catholic James ans became king of England. The British don’t see it as an invasion because of the lack of massive battles and because of the fact that Wiliam demanded some of the most powerful nobles to send him a request to invade so he had an excuse. After he landed with almost 40,000 troops, the largely protestant English Army suffered massive desertions and James couldn’t put up meaningful resistance. Because most of the largely protestant British saw William, who was a well known protestant icon, as a liberator, rather than an invader like William the Conqueror in 1066, it nowadays isn’t seen as an invasion by the British, but it’s still a foreign leader forcefully deposing the rightful ruler and seizing the throne.

You are right (I think, I am not sure).. but the Netherlands are the second biggest exporting country, on agricultural food in the world... Yes, the U.S.A, is still the biggest.
Yes I am a proud Dutchie ! But I'am not blind. You and me might not like the Donald Trump (?).
Still about 1/5 th of the Dutch voters would vote for Trump. Just saying, without pride. But let us not get pollitical. But I think you should know. As Dutch people and the Germans like to follow the U.S.A. No not on everything, but surely on Hollywood.
But please do not ideolise the Dutch. We are not the gateway to heaven... In those ages, we (or those Dutchies than) did not care about your rights, nor of the English. In a terrible way we were like Donald Trump (or at least our merchants over seas)... we did only care about the money by then.
As you could imagine the Dutch, Spanish, French and Portuguese army's were allready in conflicht with each otrer. All countries with an acces to the North sea, or to the Atlantic Ocean. And just like modern warfare, the enemies of our enemies were our best friends... als long as it lasted. No, we Dutchmen were nog that much else as the current world leaders. But still, we were the smallest player by then.
The Americans would always be thankfull for the Dutch support? No that was not entirely true. Okay, America was on the side of Europe against the nazi's (and we are allways thankfull for them, who wanted to sacrifice their lives for a free Europe.
But as I can remember (sorry, another political dissision) from George Bush Jr... threatened the Netherlands to invade us (and was prepared to kill our army, police force and citicens if the international court of Law/ justice court would sentance one American for warcrimes. If it was a soldie or some Blackwater gun for hire.
Yes that was almost like an explenation of war. To kill thousands to get one American war criminal free. Some republicans love serial killers more, than humanity.
I wish you all the best! The Netherlands probably thank you too! You are always welcome here. But not everything is as good here as it seems. The same counts for America. Every country has to deal with their own history... some for the good, some for the better... and yeah, some for the worse. And almost all elder countries have to deal with all of the!
