It's their only album without Geri Halliwell, who later rejoined the group for their Greatest Hits album in 2007. Despite failing to match the commercial success of the group's two previous albums, Forever peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Worldwide, the album has sold over four million copies. A double A-side single was released of "Holler" and "Let Love Lead the Way" as the album's lead single, which peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart.

An important info: Goodbye was also released as a single, although 2 years prior to the release of the album. It was #1 Christmas song on the UK, #11 on the Billboards charts and it sat at the number-one position for sixteen consecutive weeks in Canada.

Song fact: Goodbye was their first single without Geri, it was recorded during their American leg of the Spice World tour (Geri had just left after the European tour in May '98) as a quartet. After their tour wrapped in Wembley by the end of summer in '98, Goodbye was released as their Christmas single that year. After that, the 4 remaining girls took a break and spent most of 1999 recording their 3rd/final album FOREVER. Since Goodbye was released as a solo single, they added it as the last track on FOREVER (the album was released in 2000).

    Trivia:
Die Hard Spice Fans tend to like this album but casual fans and the general public did not care for it. One reason being is that it was a huge departure from their traditional bubblegum pop sound and it was very off-brand for the group. In the reunions after this album, the Girls have yet to perform any album tracks from this album, electing to only perform the singles.
While recording songs for their 3rd Album, the Spice Girls first started off working with their same producers recording traditional Spice Girls style bubblegum pop tracks. Then they decided to experiment with R&B sounds working with DarkChild and Jimmy Jam / Terry Lewis. They decided to release only the R&B tracks and the pop tracks got scrapped, accept for one, which is "Goodbye". One pop track "Right Back At Ya" was reworked & remixed by Darkchild, and included on the album. A few of the scrapped pop tracks have since leaked: "Give You What You Want", "A Day in Your Life", "Pain Proof" & "Right Back At Ya (Pop Version). I highly recommend listening to these songs along with every unreleased Spice Girls Song & B-side. One of the scrapped pop songs, "W.O.M.A.N." was performed live at their Earls Court Concert, which you can find on TH-cam, although the studio version of this song was never released or leaked. the Earls Court Concert was done in 1999, 1 year before "Forever" was released in 2000, however they perform "Holler", "Right Back at Ya (Pop Version) & "Goodbye" in that show.
"Tell Me Why", "Weekend Love" and "If You Wanna Have Some Fun" were planned to be the next singles from "Forever" however those plans were scapped after poor album sales. Two remixes of "Tell Me Why" have been released. I highly recommend the "Thunderpuss Remix", since I find it to be better than the album version.
Radio edit versions of "Holler", "Let Love Lead The Way", and "Goodbye" do exist and can be found on their Greatest Hits Album. Radio edits of "Tell Me Why", "Weekend Love" and "If You Wanna Have Some Fun" also exist, including a No-Rap version of "Weekend Love".
You say the Spice Girls had a Friendly break-up with the song "Goodbye" but actually they did write a "You fucked us" shade track about Ginger Spice. Just listen to the lyrics of "Tell Me Why" again.
"Viva Forever the musical" featured a few songs from this album: "Tell Me Why", "Let Love Lead The Way", "Right Back At Ya", "Time Goes By" and "Goodbye".
Although this is the last Spice Girls album, your Spice Journey is actually not Complete. Each Spice Girl has at least 3 solo albums each you will need to listen to. Mel C alone had 8 albums. All their solo material is actually very good.

Love your reviews, these memories are great. Yea, this album was very interesting when it was released. I remember going to the CD store to rent CDs during my summer break.
I was going through the pop shelf, and realized that the Spice Girls had released an album. I did not recognize the cover. I thought to myself, what happened to the Spice Girls? You never hear about them anymore (this was before Social media haha). I decided to rent this CD, and I was completely blown away. This, to me, was the Spice Girls best album, along with Melanie C's I
turn to you (this song was a huge MTV hit). Holler is my favorite track from them. I was stunned that they did not promote this more in the US. I remember that Destiny's Child had Survivor around that same time, and that album really blew up for Beyonce. After listening to this,
I thought found a hidden gem in the Spice Girls. I officially became a fan of that day, and I always loved going back to listen to this album. The Spice Girls were really big, but the popularity really faded by 1998 tbh. I think people's sentiment was really focused on TLC and Destiny's child during the time (just my memories lol!).

Victoria and one of the other girls said a few times during this era "we have nothing left to prove" whilst they did a minimalistic promo campaign (compared to their previous promo tours) - not the best thing to say when trying to sell a new album, the first since one member quit and after a 3 year break between albums.

    • @Marc-zi5cq
      @Marc-zi5cq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Zero Promotion is not true. They did Holler and Let Love Lead The Way on TOTP twice, CD/UK, The National Lottery Show ( Let Love Lead The Way), they did interviews everywhere from Japan, to Europe to the US and also performed at the European MTV Awards in Nov 2000.
They stopped promotion as the album dropped from 2 to 16 in week 2 in the UK and then to #32 in week 3, while it barely made the top 40 in the US. They had a promo video for If You Want To Have Some Fun on the music channels to promote the album after Holler and Let Love Lead The Way dropped. It just did not make the album sell either so they stopped promoting and returned to their solo stuff. TBH i think they and their record company were scared that if they continued to release more singles, they might enter somewhere between #5 and #10 in the UK and it would ruin their streak of #1 and #2 singles and the press would call them flops even more than they did with the chart performance of Forever so they quit, while they were ahead. Their chartrun was not good, i think in total the album was only 10 weeks on the UK top 100. Mel C's and Geri's soloalbums did alot better so maybe at the time, people were more into Solo Spice or just they did not like Spice Girls without Geri or the sound?

FUN FACT: they started working on the material for the album in 98/99 around the time they wrote and released Goodbye, and it was pop more akin to their previous material (they performed the pop versions on their 99 tour). Check out the pop version of Right Back At Ya; and other tracks that didn’t make the album such as W.O.M.A.N; Proof; If It’s Lovin’ On Your Mind; A Day in Your Life.
They then re-engineered the sound of the album to be more modern RnB

I think Forever is definitely their most interesting album (with Geri leaving and the genre change). I think Forever was meant to be their grand reinvention as a serious R&B group but the problem was that people loved their personalities. They created their songs to capture a feeling and to have a life of their own. THAT'S what made them so infectious.
Forever didn't showcase nearly as much personality as Spice and Spiceworld. Vocally, they sound great but there's no life behind most of these songs (except for Holler, If You Wanna Have Some Fun, Oxygen, and Goodbye). You could replace the Spice Girls with any other R&B group and it wouldn't make a difference. Frankly, it was like they were trying to be Destiny's Child (even the album cover is a carbon copy of DC's debut album). It didn't feel like a Spice Girls album and, along with lack of promotion, that is why the album failed.

    • @SalRocha
      @SalRocha  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I totally pick up what you're putting down.
However, I think personally that Forever is a better album than Spice World mostly because Spice World feels a tad bit sanitized compared to Spice. Forever goes full R&B which was one of my favorite parts of Spice.

  • @xxxTIN0xxx
    @xxxTIN0xxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

This album was very ahead of its time, it was one of the very first albums to encompass the new millennium R&B. The sound was crispy with a futuristic and modern production with an extra of Soul in the ballads and the Spice Girls still kept their own signature original sound through the distinctive vocals. It was a re-invention for them and it's fantastic when artists evolve and venture into a total new chapter in their careers music and style wise. The main producer Darkchild used the sound and vibe from "Forever" to produce the albums of other R&B American artists later (one being Brandy). It gained success as it sold around 4 million copies in total and produced two successful hits but the girls didn't even bother to promote it because they were concentrated on their solo projects. Mel C had had an enormous success with her debut album "Northern Star" and wanted to continue (she was definitely right on that as she eventually had the most successful and longest career) and Emma and Posh released their first albums after months. Mel B was promoting her solo album and "Forever" simultaneously. In other words they didn't give this album the proper attention, they quickly gave up.

I have really enjoyed this journey through Spice World with you. Your reactions are fantastic. Forever is such a great album but, they didn't promote it. In the UK Holler/Let Love Lead The Way and Goodbye went to Number 1, Forever landed at Number 2.
They never officially split up they just went and done their solo stuff. When they released the Greatest Hits they had 2 new songs Headlines and Voodoo.
When it came to deciding the route for Forever, Mel B wanted the R'n'B style, Mel C wanted the Pop Rock style, Emma wanted 60s style and Victoria wanted to remain with Pop.
If you get the chance you should check out Spice Girls Live in Earls Court 1999. They previewed a couple songs from the 3rd album before they decided the route to take. You will hear Holler a pop version of Right Back At Ya and a track that never made it which fans to this day would love released called W.O.M.A.N.

Thank you for listening to the Spice Girls these days, they still deserve a lot more recognition. Most 90's bands indeed were created and didn't make their own music while the Spice Girls wrote, produced and created their songs, they created their dance routines and the whole "spice" universe was born FROM them not FOR them, from their personalities from their differences from their craziness, that was all them so that's why we still love them and remember them vividly.

Goodbye wasn’t written for Geri, actually Geri was one of the writers of the song. It’s a left out song from the Spiceworld writing sessions. So when Geri left and the girls were touring in America, they did some changes to the lyrics, recorded it Tennessee and released it. You can tell by the melody that Goodbye has a certain spark the rest of the album doesn’t have, Goodbye was one of their 90’s songs.

If I remember correctly, Goodbye was the Xmas No.1 in the UK in 1999, and then Holler/Let Love Lead The Way was released in 2000 as a double-A side which also debuted at No.1 in the UK. Then it felt like the promotional campaign just ended as soon as the album was released?!

When Forever was released I was 10 and then I've found it more difficult in some way. I mean I could listen to whole Spice or Spice World in one session, whereas while listening to Forever I had to stop after 7th track and finish the album later. English is not my first language and I couldn't get the meaning of the lyrics until I re-discovered the songs in my early 20's. Despite the fact that the singles and Right back at ya or Tell me why were very catchy, previous albums were more enjoyable to play, even not understanding the songs. (Btw. I remember very well the day I got the CD with Forever. It was a beautiful autumn and I've got good memories from that period. When I listen to some tracks I feel the same way I felt then. I still got the record in my drawers). Now I think the whole album is beautiful whose songs are about simething, with a story which is not so obvious nowadays.

OMG I totally agree with you: "FOREVER" is definitely the best Spice Girls album. Why? You said it well...much more mature & the vocals were absolutely amazing. Actually you forgot you said 4 min it was too long for a song...except "If you wanna have some fun".
Why you keep calling it "Groove with me"? The name was "Get down with me" :) Am I the one who's wrong & they named it different in the US.
They actually performed a lot of songs of this album in the Earl's Court Concert. In my opinion that concert was the best vocally arranged. "STOP", "Who do you think you are", "Mama" & "Goodbye" you're going to love the way they sound.
HOLLER is definitely a difficult song to sing...my fave live version of Holler was the one they did for the Spice World tour in 2019.
You made me go back in time & I really connected with your reaction because the first time I listened this album I could feel it again. Thanks for that!!!
Your reaction was so sincere & you mean it...I remember playing this CD in my Apple G4 CUBE. I was the most minimalist tech device then playing for me the greatest album in 2001.
So for me that was a rocket ship direct to the stars. It was the 00's and I worked soooo hard to buy this beautiful collectable museum pieces. (Yes I mean the G4 & Forever CD...2 become 1)
To listen "HOLLER" in those amazing G4 speakers woah...heaven.
The album included a link to watch the videos in their web site using "Real Player". Those were the 00's the beginning of this Millennium. Happy times!!!!!
So is it for you the beginning of SPICE GIRLS FOREVER???
When the Spice Girls ended, Melanie C never said goodbye. It has been 21 years listening her music. Different albums & genres. She has work harder than anyone else in the Spice Girls musically speaking.
She is my hero. She saved the Spice Girls & you'll see...she will become a legend. You just arrived on time.
    Goodbye from Mexico.

We are soon celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the third and final Spice Girls album. While it is true that Spice and Spiceworld are the two best albums of the group.(My personal opinion) Forever is far from a failure. I think this third album deserves more respect.
    𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑
During the Spiceworld tour in early 1998, the band embarked on an initial project of writing and recording songs for a possible third album and a live album. The original concept of this "3rd album" was to feature solos, duets and songs featuring all five members, in order to promote the idea that the Spice Girls were all individuals, but could come together as one.
In 1998, it was announced that the third album would be full of covers and new songs, including covers of Celebration by Kool and the Gang, Where Did Our Love Go by The Supremes, We Are Family by Sister Sledge, Sisters are Annie Lennox's Doin 'It For Themselves and Madonna's Holiday. All of which were later abandoned due to the departure of Geri Halliwell.
In July 1998, on the Spiceworld Tour, the girls traveled to Nashville to record their new Christmas single "Goodbye". They also recorded "My Strongest Suit" for the musical "Aida".
Mel B commented on rumors that the Spice Girls' new album wouldn't be released until the year 2000 saying, "That's a bunch of bullshit, we're in the studios recording our second single, and our album is due out as soon as Vicky and I have a week off for our babies. "
On August 2, 1999, the Spice Girls officially began work on their third studio album. Along with Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe, the girls began writing for the album at Abbey Road Studios in London. Several tracks emerged, including the songs "WOMAN", "Treasure", "Go, Go, Go" and "Too Hot") but none of the tracks made it into the final album and none, (as of except "WOMAN" - which was performed live on the Christmas In Spiceworld tour in 1999), were heard.
The band also recorded with Eliot Kennedy at Steelworks Studios in Sheffield on August 16, 1999, and the tracks they recorded were "Right Back At Ya", "A Day In Your Life", "Give You What You Want" and “Proof of Pain.” “Right Back At Ya” premiered on the Christmas tour and was eventually part of the third album, while the other three songs were cut from the album.
On August 25, 1999, the group returned to London and began working with American R&B producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins - who had also worked with Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child and Jennifer Lopez. - at Whitfield Street Studios. Eager to develop their sound and image, the band wanted a more American and urban touch in a desire to stay fresh and connect with a maturing fan base. The tracks that emerged included the songs "Holler", (originally known as "Holler Holler") "Let Love Lead The Way" and "Weekend Love" - all of which were part of the final cut. On September 21, 1999, the girls returned to Whitfield Street Studios, this time to meet Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - the men who turned Prince and Janet Jackson into global megastars and who had worked with Mariah Carey, Usher, TLC and Mary. J. Blige. The result was the album's two most critically acclaimed tracks - "If You Wanna Have Some Fun" and "Oxygen".
In October 1999, work on "Forever" ceased; Melanie C embarked on a solo tour in an effort to promote Northern Star, and Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, and Mel B began recording their solo material.
In December 1999 they performed live for a UK-only tour titled Christmas in Spiceworld at Manchester Arena and Earl's Court, also featuring new songs from the third album. At their Christmas concerts, the Spice Girls performed "Right Back At Ya", "WOMAN" and "Holler".
As the album was postponed to "late 2000", the Spice Girls performed "Holler" at the Brit Awards on March 3, 2000, where they also accepted their "Outstanding Contribution to Music Award", and rumors circulated that the song to be their next single. The album's next recording session continued to be postponed due to the unavailability of the Spice Girls or Rodney Jerkins. If it was absolutely necessary, the girls would fly to Miami to work with him.
It wasn't until April 10, 2000 - seven months after the London sessions and almost two years since Geri left, that work on the album resumed at the Hit Factory in Miami, USA. It was late at night as the Spice Girls fought to finish their album. "Tell Me Why", "Get Down With Me" and "Time Goes By" (originally known as "When You're With Me") were all written with Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins - but Melanie C does not appear on the writing credits. At the time, she was still focusing on her solo career, so the material was written without her, and she put her voice after.
In April 2000, the band decided that material recorded with Matt & Rowe and Kennedy the previous year would be shelved because it did not fit in with the R&B dominated material they had recorded with Darkchild and Jam & Lewis. The only song to survive was "Right Back At Ya" - but only after being heavily remixed by Darkchild, something original producer Eliot Kennedy found very insulting. They had turned one of the best pop songs he had ever done and turned it into a "laborious, boring, substantive R&B song", in his opinion. The other three songs produced by Kennedy were leaked online in 2015.
On July 17, 2000 they returned to Whitfield Street Studios and recorded "Wasting My Time" with Fred Jerkins (which does not feature vocals by Mel B and writing credits by Victoria Beckham) and they also remixed and re-recorded "Right Back" At Ya ".
Forever struggled to live up to the enormous commercial expectations set by the band’s two previous releases. It still sold millions around the world, but it was a fraction of the number that and Spiceworld had generated just a few years earlier. Emerging on 6 November 2000, Forever seemed like a record struggling to find its moment: an uncertain step onto unfamiliar terrain, with creative ambition seemingly dragging each member in a different direction while they still tried to stay tight as a group. On the all-out pop closer ‘Goodbye’ - recorded 18 months earlier - things spectacularly burst back into life. That said it all. Forever is an interesting et great. It seems harsh to describe Forever as a flop - it did go platinum and produce a number one single - but it’s fair to say the reaction to the project was decidedly mixed.
By the time Forever was released in November 2000, the girls’ hearts weren’t really in the group anymore, but had things been different the whole era could have been so much greater.
A release for the amazing 'Tell Me Why' was planned, but scrapped. The defiant 'Right Back At Ya' would also hav made a great single. For "Tell Me Why" Melanie C was not involved in the writing of this song due to scheduling conflicts with her solo album, Northern Star. The song is thought to be about the remaining frustration with the Spice Girls after ex-band member Geri Halliwell left the band.
Can you imagine how good some of these songs would have sounded on tour? Forever was, and still is, a really strong offering from the Spice Girls, and it’s a shame that pop music fans largely ignore it.
Okay, perhaps it wasn’t the right album to relaunch the group in 2000: The girls continually emphasised that Forever was a more “mature” sound for them, but that wasn’t necessarily what fans wanted at the time.
However, you can’t help but wonder what the reaction to the album would have been like had they released a ‘spicier’ third album beforehand. If the era hadn’t been cut short, we could have seen more of this…

I get sad thinking about how the spice girls era was the beginning of the end when Geri left. I always think what music could’ve been made if they all stuck together for a little bit longer. Fame is a monster and it effected the girls differently especially with Mel c in the 1999/2000 era. She was so over the sporty spice label and wanted to do her own thing. And with Geri, they all had their reasons and I respect that. I get such a bittersweet feeling. It’s always bonkers to me, the amount of success they had in such a short amount of time that other artists could only ever dream of achieving in their careers.

I remember when this cd comes out, as a child it knocked me at first cuz the vibe and sound were very different to the other cds. But its true, this is her best work, its r&b and pop, was hard to me to accept that sound without geri, even if geri wasnt a good or complex singer like example Mel C. You can hear more victoria's wavy and classic voice, and its clearer each voice from the girls, and to me was like, "girls, we have to take serious this time". Its a shame that forever hasnt the recognition it deserved in that time. Got beautiful memories buying this cd with my dad, still got this CD Aswell you could watch the official videos in your pc like holler and let love lead the way with this cd. Think i still hope more songs from spice girls, but its just a dream. The greatest hits album has 2 more songs like headlines and voodoo, but as a fan, these songs are the weakest. Forever was poorly promoted and released after a 1.5 year hiatus. I truly think that they had a contract obligation (Mel C implied that on many occasions) but i also believe that if it was released a bit earlier, it would do equally good with the previous ones. People were SO eager to see the post Geri era but after two years the music landscape was very different and the younger ones were listening Britney, Christina etc P.S. They have also released a Greatest Hits album with two new songs, so practically they have released 4 albums :) PS2 The intro was kind of a signature sound by Darkchild. He did it with all the artists he collaborated this similar intro PS3 Yes, I might be old but i remember all the SG details!

Tell Me Why is about Geri leaving the band. When you know that, the lyrics are even more cutting.

Goodbye made to #11 in US which was a good result considering they were already forgotten by the end of 1998 everywhere else in the world except UK. :)
