One of the few jkd instructors that even talks about footwork... Footwork and timing even beats technique, fightmentality or physical condition... I recommend trainining every punch with every footworkstep there is. That raises your options in a fight exponentially.
This is top notch training right here! Willie Pep went a whole round without throwing a punch. He accomplished that buy using his footwork with circling and changing directions.
Having had the opportunity to train with Ted Wong, Sifu Jason is right about footwork is very important, it is the means by which you can hit and avoid being hit.
"How's your footwork?" That was my sifu's #1 question when he visited me. I've taught jkd 24 years from sifu Chris Sato under Taky Kimura. I don't do videos, but your correct on your explanation. I drill that into my students, but it's a process they take a while to really get.
I keep revisiting all these videos, and a huge eye opener was that recommendation in the "Training When You're Older" to "treat the heavy bag as a tool for shadow boxing."
Then you havent seen shit there is a clip called Bruce Lee -footwork where an actual student of bruce lee teaches Bruces Footwork and clearly explains every move bruce makes this white mofo is just a click bait
ALTHOUGH THE LEAD INWARD OF THE (KNEE &) FOOT POSITION IS GREAT FOR BALANCING THE BODY, THIS LEAD FOOT INWARD MAKES IT HARD FOR THE EXECUTIONS OF THE REAR CROSS PUNCH. SPECIALLY THAT THE ANKLE OF THE FOOT WELL HAVE TO ROTATE FROM INWARD TO OUTWARD TO EXECUTE THE REAR PUNCH.
Brilliant! I never realized the importance o Footwork. I took ten years of Kempo Karate, sparred a lot yet never realized the value of lateral movement. I'm sure my instructors told me to circle my opponent but The way you explain it helps it sink in.
Oniweeki glad to help! It’s a constant thing here...we all need to be reminded not to trade shots, but to use footwork smartly to set up attacks and counters. We literally teach a full class of fighting footwork!! Anyway, thanks for watching
You were doing a pendulum and describing it as a push shuffle. As far as foot work, you can put the weight of your feet where you want to. I had a lesson from one of Mike Tyson's Trainer's They told to move with my feet flat on the ground, because it waste's less energy, BUT if you want to do foot work the way Bruce taught it, its up on the ball of your feet, not the mid part of the foot. I trained with two Bruce Lee students for 16 years as well as one of Dan Inosanto's students who trained when Bruce was alive. It's the ball of the foot for Jeet Kune do. But if you want to do it another way, that';s your choice, but I think it's important to make the distinction; My way vs the JKD way.
I agree in everything you said here...I'm a filipino martial arts practitioner and I am using this method of fighting,,,even in knife fighting hand to hand combat or stick fighting...over all method of this concept is what I'm using, specially when it comes to a street fight...
Did you practice Jun Fan Gung Fu or JKD ? Where ? Inosanto Academy to Marina del Rey L.A ? From a student of Bruce Lee ? Because what your show is boxing footwork; not more ! Jun Fan exercices are done with a partner to controle the distance, break the range.....etc
Thank you I really enjoyed the lesson but to go a little further you said JKD is A science is that like looking at the characteristics of A wrestler and A boxer and learning the strengths and weaknesses of the two completely different Fighters knowing that they CAN both be winners but the styles are very different?
Do you have a video that compares the JKD footwork vs the Winchun Footwork? I'm interested in how you reconcile the differences. Particularly the more squared o wider stance of WC (Where you keep checking your stance in the video) and the more side-on stance of JKD where you are allowed to bring your feet together. Thank you!
Mayweather style Every body was bored when he was fighting but they never noticed on the streets that style will be devastating hit and don't get hit osssssuuu
I am really looking forward to my move from AZ to Chattanooga (DEC, 2021), so I can come train at the academy. I have been working the footwork like clockwork religiously, and correct me if I am wrong, this the footwork in this video, has less potential obstacles to trip you up?
Thank you Sifu Jason. Do you treat kicking distance the same way as boxing distance to use the intercepting principle? Or are kicks regarded as differently because they are slower most of the time?
Great question. It’s pretty much the same principle for both the leading hand and foot. Of course, the leg is slower as you said so we have to be very precise in our delivery. But it’s also the “queen” on the chess board too given that it’s longer and more powerful than the punch. Bruce Lee called the shin/knee kick the spearhead of the whole shebang because it’s so hard to defend against. We’ll have some more material forthcoming about this, in fact. Thanks again for the question and for watching.
Bruce lee use to watch hours and hours of boxing. One thing about boxing bruce Lee was a big fan of was the boxing footwork. What bbn sifu Jason is showing is straight boxing foot work
Yes and no. Much of JKD (as we understand and teach it) is a logical derivative of the old-school boxing/fencing principles in the first place. Driscoll, Dempsey, Ali…even Tyson, are great examples of those principles in action. Obviously you have to box, which is to say that you’re gonna have to adjust to the ring. The gloves and angles make things a little different so you have to account for that. Don’t get caught with your hands out in front of you “trying” to maintain the guard position. It’s not illegal or anti-JKD to change your guard to accommodate for the boxing ring. But beyond that, the footwork and jab will be fantastic…you just have to make sure you’re working on your timing, evasiveness and guard so you don’t get nailed over the top and/or around the corner. There will be a learning curve, of course, but it’s worth it. Hope this helped and thanks for watching.
Sanki Shubhank coffee! Lots of coffee!!! Lol. No, seriously...thanks for the compliment. I’d say that first you have to have the right attitude about it. I talk about that in the video. If you believe in footwork and elusiveness and all that you’ll be quicker than if you focus solely on hitting people. That’s the key. Next, train and drill it. So, proper mental attitude that you put into your training. That’s the way to do it. Thanks again and good luck. Let me know how it’s going. I’m sure you’ll get faster and more mobile.
@@JKDandWingChun Hola!! A heavy thanks for your opinion...I am feeling glad and lucky at this very time..😊 I am framing myself continuously and I will do it in "flying" colors.. Again a big thanks...I will disturb you when my next doubt appears... Upto then.... Your resources will be sufficient.
Where is a full video course just on footwork? If hand goes before foot, then the arm is fully extended WAY before the bodymass catches up, i find that to be a puzzle
R Sch we’re working on getting the instructional courses done as soon as we can and we’ll let you all know when they’re good to go. As for your question: I certainly understand your confusion. The idea is to time the action so that your strike lands a split second before your foot does. That way, you have maximum force/momentum behind the blow. A good example of this is vintage Ali. He used his jab off his footwork quite often. Also, Roy Jones Jr. did the same thing - incredibly, though, with a leading cross (such was Roy’s amazing athleticism!!). Hope this helps clear up the confusion.
I need to see a good practical sparring or fight with this used . demo'd etc... Most fights degrade into brawls no matter. Their are exceptions ... I have read Driscol. Dempsey. Frazier. Haislet.. But have yet to really see most or any applied.. Maybe I am blind or expect to much.. Good vid. Thx...
Just suggestion make videos that get straight to the exercises so we do not have to listen to explanation every time, or tell us where the exercises are what time if you already understand the reasoning. I just like coming back to exercises to ensure I am still doing them correct. Either way I appreciate the knowledge, thanks.
