Wow, you are the most patient, talented artist who even takes a knife to correct mistakes that aren't even there. This is the reason that your work is so breathtaking, because you take care and perfect your skills. Beautiful.
Hi Helen, my you are sweet! I've yet to get through a portrait without a number of mistakes. I just gave up after a bit with this one as the paper didn't not take kindly to my erasing attempts. :) Thank you so much for the amazing comment!

Hola Fernando, siempre es bueno saber de ti. Gracias por el comentario. Me estoy divirtiendo mucho y es genial saber que mis videos ayudan a otros. Saludos desde el estado de Washington.
Hi Brenda. It's been a while since I added any comments but I've been taking a break for a few weeks - although I've still been keeping track of your TH-cam Videos and I returned to a burn that's becoming quite an epic - in time and detail. I was quite impressed with this tutorial - for someone who says that they can't do faces, this project was amazing. It was a shame that you felt that the paper you used ruined the piece - no matter how many people say that it's great, all we see are the errors that appear to be huge black blotches on the project. I, however, liked it. Amazing detail and shading. I'm still unconvinced on paper as a medium, the more I see of its use, the less I like it. It will be a long time before I would even consider it. Keep up the good work :)
Hi Pete, It has been a long time. I'm glad to hear from you and even gladder (I don't think that's a word) that you are staying creative. You're pyrography work is good. Yes, I agree that most artist are more critical of their own work than others are. As for paper the brand makes a big difference. I've found a brand that I actually like (winsor & newton). I didn't test out that brand until portrait #6 and the little girl is #3, so still a few videos away. Thank you for the comment and it was really great hearing from you!
This is the first of your videos that I have watched. Your teaching technique is very good for the way I learn. I will tell others about your teachings and will be watching more in the future! Thank you for helping us to learn!
Another fantastic and very in depth tutorial on how to create a portrait using Pyrograhy. There is a lot of info contained within this video. I was very impressed at how you created the eye. Very precise and accurate shading. You filled the eyes with life, if you do not get the eyes right in a portrait, the whole artwork usually fails, even if you have done a great job on the other elements that make up the face. The gentle shading on the face/skin is wonderful. You certainly have the skills to pull off a very successful portrait artwork. (more than enough skill ) The final art looks fantastic, enjoyed watching this very much Brenda . big thumbs up for you Q O P :)
Hi DK, thank you. Portraits are not my strong suit. I've yet to get through a portrait without a number of mistakes being made. Ironically 99% of the commission work I get is for portraits. Guess they figure I can I create bird artwork I can do people. :) I totally agree about the eyes! Thank you again for the fantastic comment!
Hi Brenda. Another incredible tutorial. The eyes are my favorite part. Love how you did all the layers. It's been a while since I did a portrait on paper and your video inspired me to do another one.
Hi Richy, thank you so much. Heck it was from you that I got inspired to not only burn on paper, but to try and get better with portraits. Unfortunately portraits just feel like a lot of work to me. I don't enjoy them like I do creating animals.
You prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Duke Ezra thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Wow that is soooo beautiful. What an amazing job. I hope I’ll be able to this kind of work in the near future 👍 loved this video keep up the good work. I have never burnt on paper how does that work? I’ve only burnt on wood
Hi Nathalie, You will get there. I sure as heck didn't start out at this level! I enjoy pyrography so much that I'm willing to stick with it and continue to push myself to improve. That is nothing more than saying I practice, and like all skills, the more you practice the better you get. Paper is more challenging than wood, to me anyways. It requires a higher heat setting and a lot more re-burning to build up darker colors without charring the paper. Plus depending on the brand of paper it can get blotchy very easily. This particular brand was not a favorite of mine. So far my favorite has been Winsor & Newton hot pressed, 140 pound, 100% cotton paper.
Beautiful! I’m new to pyrography (started last year) and have been practicing on paper. I bought Arches 140lb hot press and am having a hard time with blotching. Could you recommend your favourite watercolour paper?
Hi Barb, I have not tried the Arches yet, but I do plan to test it out along with a few others at some point. So far my absolutely favorite has been Winsor & Newton 140 pound, HP, 100% cotton watercolor paper. It has been the closest to feeling like wood to me. It's smooth and I didn't experience the blotching like I have on some of the other brands of paper I've tried. Here's a link to the brand on Amazon, but note that I cannot promise amazon is the cheapest place to buy. Just make sure to get the hot pressed (hp). www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7UAFQ7/ref=twister_B079SZZ3N5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Obrigado! É muito gentil da sua parte dizer isso. Quero mencionar que qualquer pessoa pode fazer o que eu faço, desde que esteja disposta a dedicar algum tempo à prática. Obrigado novamente pelo comentário muito bom.
No. I adjust the number on my burner until I get a medium to dark tan burn result. After that I use hand speed and re-burning to create the tonal variety. The only time I adjust the number on the burner is when I'm working on a large area that is either really pale or really dark. Then I'll adjust the heat setting as needed.
Dennis, you made me laugh. I've often had the same debate with myself over the best way to describe this. I haven't come up with an answer, so I try to avoid saying it. :)
What about older pictures..? I’m trying to do a portrait for my mom and the only picture I have is over 26 years old and barely any details. The picture is so dark...
Hi Susi, great question. The only thing I can think of is to take a high resolution photo of the picture. Generally all cameras have image quality and/or size settings. Put both on the highest / largest setting so you get the most resolution. Then use a photo editing program and see if you can sharpen and lighten the photo to get more details out of it. If you don't have a photo editing program, Richy Coelho did a video on how to use a free online photo editor. Here's a link to his video: th-cam.com/video/M_Cm2Q4cqcE/w-d-xo.html I know there are some youtube videos that discuss working with old photos to restore them, so you might do a query and see if one of them might be beneficial. Good luck with your project!
This is a 2 year old video so I don’t know if you’re going to see this but I was wondering. Once you’re a proficient artist, is it difficult to switch to pyrography? Is it a huge learning curve?
Hi Phil, TH-cam is set up so that it puts all of the newest comments in my comments are to see, so the post date of the video doesn't matter. Great question! I think it makes the learning curve easier in some aspects. There is always going to be a learning curve with the machine. What setting to use for the material burned on, what pen tip works best for your style, etc. Where I think being a proficient artist helps is that you know how to make things look 3d. You understand how highlights and shadows work and things along that line. This mean you aren't trying to learn to draw and learn how to use the machine at the same time. Thanks for the comment and question.

Hi. I'm not burning on wood. I am burning on watercolor paper. The particular brand is in the video description. I don't recommend it though. The best watercolor paper I've burned on so far is by Winsor & Newton.

I think you teach well but this ine is just above my talent. I am just a beginner. I wish I ccould find a placce where there is a physical teacher which could help you right now. I learn better if I have someone who could be able and correct my mistakes at the time. This way I can make mistakes but then I really don't know what I did wrong.
Hi Mary, The only thing I can suggest is to look for a local pyrography or wood carving club. I do think you will get this. Work on projects that you enjoy. I know of several beginners who like to create simple flowers and then add color to them. They are having a great time. To me, that's the most important aspect of it all.
