@@snappy1622 and even Raving Rabbids could've been something much better too. Remember the trailer where Rayman is beating the snot out of the Rabbids, flying around on an eagle and all that? There was even a 3rd party studio working on a separate Rayman 3D platformer too, inspired by the first game, but it got shut down too.

That moment in the grand foyer with the Leptys statue where you figure you're safe on the ramp because they get stuck on the wall....only for one to no clip his way through and resume the chase, it formed the foundation of absolute terror in my 8 year old mind and became a focal point of my nightmares for YEARS

11:00 After replaying the game a few years ago I finally realized why you can beat Reflux but not the other Knaarens. Reflux is the strongest warrior because of the magical staff. That staff makes him more powerful than anyone else but gives him a unique weakness. The jewel is linked to his body and probably serves as a way to enable or focus his magical abilities.
If you pay close attention he's immune to attacks to his body. You need to actually hit the jewel on the staff to damage him both in this fight and in the last one where he's embedded it into his body. The devs really put care into details like this.

The desert of the knaaren.....one of the OG scary games from kid games. I remember going into the level, thinking "oh cool." But when the teensies warn you of the Knaaren, i thought, "oh okay." Every time a Knaaren caught me, I think "oh God why?" This level, and the beast makers location from spyro 1 (because that was the original "why is this in a kids game" moment for me) gave me nightmare vibes in a kids game.
For me, what made this location scary is because the knaaren where the enemies Rayman COULDN'T beat, just run away from. This level was my favorite horror level in a kids game specifically because the knaaren had so much charm to them.

For some reason when I was a kid, I didn't find the Desert of Knaaren as scary as it may have been perceived. I did find it very hard, however.
On the other hand, I considered the Longest Shortcut to be rather unnerving (not kidding). Sure, it's got cheery music and gimmicky puzzles, but there was something about it that got me. What if I never found the way out? It'd be like being eternally stuck in a prison, all alone with happy music playing in the background while you're slowly going insane. I know how ridiculous this sounds, but hey, those puzzles were not easy yo.

the level was pure genius. how the teenies warn you of them and how the knaaren are actually a big treat but you never really interact with them. you never get to fight them or even think about fighting them. the point is to avoid them which really is what makes them so scary. you want to get away from them, because thats the goal of the level. also the ghosts. they only spawn when you are at your most vulnerable carrying the fruit, slow and unable to attack. also i think the boss beeing easy was also a good decision. after all the effort you get to overcome them, even though it was just because of the mercy of the king. beating the strongest one and getting a actual reward felt so nice and is one of the reasons why i think of this game back positively.
scariest level in rayman was the tower anyways. that goddamn easter egg. that hellish gate opening and you walk in wondering, not finding anything until you climb up and find those 3 creatures speeding in their prison cells locked away. imo the creepiest easter egg.

That alone made it the one of scariest and the most fun 3d platformer levels to play as a child.

Reading all these comments I'm just shocked how Rayman 3 influenced so many people just like me. I had many memories of my childhood days with this game, and yes this one level was one of the most terrifying I could have experienced along with that other sniper-like boss who lurked you inside that Alice in Wonderland-like mansion. Rayman 3 was more than a game for me. I particulary remember one nightmare I had about this level. It was me lost inside there and I was just wandering around in an infinite loop and of course I felt those enemies attack like real with pain and grief. My bet is that it was because I couldn't ever resolve the puzzles of that level alone, I sure spend days and days trying to unsuccesfully get out of there. I waked up crying I'm not exaggerating I used to be some sensible kid fearing of everything, but perhaps it was since I played Rayman that I started to somewhat grow up in the sense of not fearing things around and also I'm nowadays a horror genre fan, loving every single horro game out there. Maybe it was thanks to that Rayman 3 level. This game will always be my favorite♥️

I watched this video out of curiosity and wasn't expecting to see a mention, ehe. Good video and research, though! I believe everyone had a moment of suspense the first time they experienced this level. I remember having some jump scares in front on my computer back at my 11 years old, but managing to pass the level through. Despite of its scariness it is one of the most fun levels of the game, in my opinion!

I very much agree; it's one of the best levels in the game for what it does differently and it seems to have left a big impact on the majority of people who played it when they were younger. It's great stuff, all around!

Oh i remember the days, this game has such a great place in my heart. From all those various themed levels, such a simple yet challenging gameplay and this very hilarious script and story, you easily fall in love with such a game. Still, this one level, i remember being so scared, even though i somehow made it through, i avoided this level as much as possible. This was when i was 6 years old. Now i am 22 and after playing this game again a few days ago, i always see the levels after this one as a complete new chapter, like a sequel you have waited for a long time. I think no game has scared me more than this one level, and this game is for 6 year olds according to our fellow german USK rating!
Afterall, i wish ubisoft was focused more on sequels in this 3D style, not like Origins or Legends. But PS2 games were such an era that had sooo many good titles. I always will see this as the best game i have ever played.

Dude I am having a massive wave of nostalgia right now. Yeah when I was a kid, I was really scared of this level too. Still I wanted to know how the game ends, so I just went through the entire level and man I had a BLAST with the Reflux boss. Actually I believe that the Reflux fight is the best video game boss fight I’ve ever played. After that I wasn’t scared anymore because I would go through those stealth areas in the tunnels, just to fight that boss again & again.

honestly, the knaaren were scary to me, but reflux was fucking cool. like, i didnt think of him as weak even though hes the only one we were able to beat, i thought he was cool because he's the only one who had magic, and the design for his spells was fantastic. and later on the last boss fight REALLY helped me to put him on the top 3 bosses i've fought in any game ever list.

The Playstation 2 version of Monster House really scared me as a kid and even to this day honestly. The entire game just has a really claustrophobic and isolated feel to it, playing as a character trapped in an old house that also happens to be alive and not happy that you're there terrified me. Another thing that kept me on edge throughout the whole game was the fact that any of the seemingly ordinary objects in the house could suddenly spring to life and attack me.
The creepy atmosphere really comes to a point in the basement level though, where the character is in this huge maze that consists of children's toys and circus equipment, most notably a gigantic carousel with an extremely disturbing clown face on it. On top of the atmosphere and the usual tension in the game, there are also these huge living pipes that drop from the ceiling and attack the character. If you haven't already, I'd really recommend checking it out.

I realized later on, how much the morbid dialogues (in the french version at least) were over the line for a game rated 7+ ... I mean, "suck his eyes" or "to bath in his blood" what the fucking hell ?!
Obviously like many people, the Knaarens gave me nightmares as a kid; a funny detail however, is that in these dreams I always had the perspective of playing the game, rather than actually experiencing the situations through my own eyes. As I remind of it, it makes me think that I was more scared of the very feeling of *playing through the level* rather than the universe itself.
Hell, I would be startled and drop the controller every time a Knaaren hit me, and the rumble feature really added up to the scare !
One of my nightmares in particular was about muting the TV with the remote, only for it to make the sound even louder and louder (my brain really played with my heart on this one haha !)
It's great that you emphasized how big of a role the soundtrack had in setting the mood. God I HATED the stage in the big open room with the tooth-shaped platforms. That music was really eerie to me with its ritualistic tones, and the Knaarens NEVER stop going on with their horrible quotes until you reach the next stage. After a few playthroughs, I realized I could mute dialogues in the game options and it quickly became a default move 😂
I could go over and over about everything that was traumatizing with this level (it's also quite a labyrinth at times, increasing further the feeling of hopelessness) but anyways, it is a strong memory and I don't really regret it; it just goes to show how dedicated the whole team behind the game was, in conveying strong and specific emotions with every location in this amazing game. But yeah, maybe it didn't have to be to this extent 😰
Also, THANK YOU for pointing out how the only guy you can beat has never been beaten by any of his own kind, not to mention that you kick his ass a second time while he has grasped the power of his tribe's god ?! Cherry on the top🥲
Anyways, that was a really good watch, you went with much detail in everything about this level and I simply think you said it all !
On that, I'll go listen to the snow level soundtrack on loop for a few hours, just to get back to a much warmer atmosphere. Peace ❤

I don’t remember being scared of this level, but i remember how shocking it was too see the Final Boss. Especially the scene before that, when you have to take the spiral stairs and you hear Reflux and Andre talking. Not that he wasn’t scary before, but he turned in a terrifying monster. I also found was quite sad to destroy him at the end, because his sole reason behind his actions were revenge and not world domination like Andre.
In other words: I just love this game to death 😂

Not sure if it's specifically called "the tunnels" you have to go through in english, cause in the german version they call it the catacombs, meaning you have to go through the place where many creatures have come to be buried.
Sometimes you can see blue glowing rocks in the floor (especially at that one part where you fall down and have to climb back up with rocks falling down at you), where those weird skeleton chickens spawn, which are most likely graves.
Also, the english version is missing a great joke where two knaaren talk about that theirs is much bigger than the other ones and one says "stop talking about your robes" lol.

You may have not experienced this but when I played the game on PC for the first time when I was 9 or 10 years old, and were in the Knaaren Desert world - I was bumping on a Knaaren despite they pushing me back on each hit, until the entire game pauses and a Teensie appears in the middle of the screen and reminds you about how MUST NOT touch the Knaaren or you will die. The level itself didn't make me feel as terrified as experiencing the Teensie King appearing on the middle of my screen and telling me about the do not's of encountering a Knaaren. Even now, as I'm typing this, I've felt several chills because I just thought of how younger players like me back then may have felt the same anxiety and insecureness. Honestly, even dumb things like Sonic.exe's "hyper realistic blood" stare with the phrase "I AM GOD" made me feel anxious and scared back then so I couldn't sleep well for a few days.

Yeah, i remember the murals representing the teensies running away from the Knaaren and then hanged up before probably being skinned and eaten...that was quite the experience as a kid.
The other level that scared me as kid was the "ancient city level 3" from Aladdin Nasira's revenge. The game had a lot of problems with the gameplay, but at the time i found it engaging and creative. It was a simple Disney action game...until the third level of the area called "the ancient city". It was the first time i called a friend to help me finish a level because i was too scared. Other levels were hard, but in the end i overcome them. But this was different. The atmosphere was gloomy and claustrophobic. The main colors were black, grey, and green. The zombies way of walk and sound was unnerving, and the fact that there were hidden dangers everywhere didn't help. But the biggest creeps of all was the soundtrack ( th-cam.com/video/zt2cgirtXLE/w-d-xo.html). At the time it was the creepiest ost i had ever heard. It was so haunting and unearthly that i had to stop for a few days before play the game again.

I played the game together with my brother when I was 5 and he was 8. My hands where too small to reach all the buttons on the keyboard at the same time which is why I had to play it with him. When we reached the Knaaren we managed to beat the very first section but my brother never wanted to play the game again. Roughly 7 years later I bought the game with 12 and played it on my ps2. I was finally able to beat the desert but I was still always very stressed. Today I've played through the game multiple times and by now with 21 I feel like the Knaaren are okay but they still send a chill down my spine whenever I enter there domain.
Side note: The dialogs on different languages very heavily. I played the game in English, French and German to compare the humor and it is drastically different. When you go up the tower for example they say: A: "My father is stronger than yours." B: "Maybe, but mine is taller" C: "Hey, stop talking about this nonsense" in English. In German however they say: A: "Mine is bigger than yours." B: "Maybe, but mine is longer. I can even touch my nose with it". C: "Hey, could you please stop talking about such things".
In the group ganging up scene the German Knaaren griefs over his dead rat btw.
