    I have a 2014 Silverado RWD, no 4X4. Installed a catch can, AC went out and had to have that repaired. Trans Flush at appx 40,000 Miles. Dropped Trans pan and replaced the filter@ around 100,000 miles. (see your maintenance schedule) it is recommended. I think Trans Failure is planned by all manufactures to get you to buy a new vehicle. so perform maintenance on your transmission. (may be too late for that to help now) also should install external trans filter. again, I believe auto manufactures leave these off intentionally so transmissions fail and you buy another vehicle.

    My 2013 dodge used to use oil too, Mobil 1 full synthetic was the remedy. As far as trans, check your lines the clips on those go bad trans cooler lines typically pop off and cause trans issues. These are easy fixes if you know how to maintain your truck properly and keep an eye on everything. Transmission flushes are a must on these new model vehicles to prevent trans wear. Other than that you’re dealing with normal shit that everyone deals with.

    Check the heater hoses to the firewall for the coolant leak. Where it drips off it won't burn but will cause a loss of coolant. The GM engineers thought having a quick-connect hose would be a great idea...for replacing it is, but for longevity... not so much.

    Hi yeah got a 2015 Silverado high country crew cab with a cap had 143,000 km on it up here in Canada 5.3 I swapped out all the fluids to Lucas putting your transmission transfer case everything as well as new plugs new wires a k&n air filter seafoam treatment in the tank to per tank for the first couple tanks drove across country and back not a single issue did have one a little bit later and it's still the AC is not as close as should be but that's just a recharge issue which I still have dealer warranty for so good truck all in all it has now $162,000 still runs great

    Bought my 2017 Silverado new . The rear main seal had to be replaced at 50k miles, and my transmission just had to be replaced at 92k miles... more problems with this chevy than I had with any of my previous 2 chevy trucks that I also bought new.

    I too have a '15 that I bought in '17 with 21K miles from a Chevy dealer (lease return).. It's taken me this long to get to 96K now 11/23. The things I did right after I got it was disable the AFM with a tune (Diablew). It is likely why your 5.3 uses oil. At first service of the transmission, I welded an O2 bung with plug to the pan and do drain & fills every 2nd or 3rd oil change (@4K) and used a STL010 TBV bypass to lower trans temps from ~190F to ~143F. Serviced the front and rear diffs and TC. The torque converters in these trucks are prone to failures due to flexing. (Sonnax has a great explanation)
    I haven't had issues other than the touch screen not responding occasionally. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    My 2014 Silverado crew cab LT 5.3L rwd has 260k miles, and transmission has been rough since 3k miles, but engine does not burn oil. I always services my truck meticulously though. Engine oil change every 5k miles with new filter, rear end fluid xhange ever 20k miles, and transmission oil every 30k miles. Antifreeze drain and fill every 40k miles. I've only changed suspension parts, and an o2 sensor. I live in southern commiefornia, so i rarely use the AC. I guess i was one of the lucky ones that got a decent truck. Also, i added an oil catch can the frist month i brought my truck home back in 2015.

    Man sad to see vehicles that use to be so reliable just plummet and get shitty over the years, my dad owned 3 GM trucks from year 2005 and 2 from 1999 1 Silverado reached 300k+ before it broke down and 1 Yukon still going strong at 400k plus and another Silverado still going at 300k+ with no major issues, I just bought a 2017 Silverado and I noticed the trans fluid has to get replaced and if that doesn’t work then it’s the torque converter hopefully nothing too serious it has 41k miles and a clean carfax 1 owner

  • @grantv2313
    @grantv2313 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I appreciate this review. Wish it would’ve been shorter and more organized. Considering trucks myself these days. I’ve owned maintained and used an 07 Trailblazer for 10 years now. It’s been good but I do a lot of preventative maintenance before things break. It’s surprising that this truck consumes all the fluids. The price of new trucks scares me. Those warranties are really valuable but you’re also paying for the truck an extra one or two years to get that most likely anyway. If these problems are to be expected anyway used prices are so much more palatable.

    • @notasolution
      @notasolution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I apologize for the disorganized nature, I will be paying more attention in the future to making my reviews to come more organized and less random, I didnt actually expect people to watch my video when I made it so I didnt care much about putting much effort but now that I realize how much these reviews can help people, I'm gonna work on being more professional with them. But yea, I mean I'm used to 90s and early 2000s fords and toyotas that need nothing but oil every 5k and little cheap parts here and there, I expected this truck to hold up at least as well if not better, since I figure it would be built with more stout and longer lasting parts and quality, being the first half ton vehicle I've owned (all my other trucks have been mid sized trucks and held up much better with less attention doing the same driving). I'm sure there are good 15 Silverado out there, but mine has been slightly more problematic than I'd like specifically. I'm seeing a few comments from people saying their trucks are fine and I'm sure they are, but I know that I'm not the only person having the issues I mentioned and more with this specific year of chevy. If you go online to any owner reviews website, you'll see similar complaints, and alot more of them than there should be. Just be careful if you're considering one of these trucks, make sure it shifts smoothly and isnt low on oil etc. I havent changed the transmission fluid but it has had regular oil changes and is not neglected or abused like some people are claiming. I let it warm up always before I drive it and I usually dont ever go above 3k rpms while driving, to give you a better idea of how this truck has been used. Hope this clears things up! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

    I own 15 silverado the only big problem i had is the torque converter at 120K was shifting hard replace it my self for 400.00 runs good now also i have Range AFM disabler that helps to shifting and engine runs smother other than that regular maintenance no complaint

  • @Mr_Tecumseh
    @Mr_Tecumseh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Its the AFM (active fuel management) causing the oil and antifreeze consumption and it leads to bigger problems overtime. Get a tuner and shut it off. I have a 2013 with the 4.8l vortec it doesn't have the AFM, last year they offered that engine which did not have AFM and I do not have those problems. All 8 cylinders always fire, which is what you want, you do not want a computer stopping 4 cylinders from firing, huge problems with that. You don't loose much mileage eithervand you get a better jump from a stop.
    Mine has the 4L80E and mine clunks now and than too, thats normal, its a pickup.

    Have a 2017 High Country 6.2L/ 8spd, bought it new, first thing was the fluid flush with Amsoil ATF and a Trifecta tune, got rid the hard shifting and clunks. As for oil consumption no issues again, but I added a catch can when it left the lot. All fluids have been changed to Amsoil. Other than that like the truck and knock on wood no problems yet. All manufacturers have issues including Ford and Toyota and yes some of it's stupid things but others are serious. Good luck with yours and keep us posted. Cheers

    Honestly only one major repair at a 100k miles for $700 isn’t too bad really. The light replacing that much is pretty ridiculous though. I’m having trouble with my stereo linking up to my phone. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

    I'm having the same issues exactly that you're having. Except for the seat thing I'm not having that. My transmission went out at 80,000 miles. It was under warranty so they fixed it but then it went out at 120,000 miles and they had to rebuild it. I bought it with a 200,000 mi powertrain warranty so the transmission was covered but there's no way it should have went out. My condenser also went out when the truck was 3 years old. The battery thing happened with mine also with the radio being silent blinkers and so on. Good luck with it I'm going to go trade mine in for a Ford.

    I have a 17 only 40k miles the only problem mine has is the shifting can be rough sometimes but it’s not the transmission it’s the truck switching from V8 to V4 etc it’s horrible and if you tune it it will be way smoother i still haven’t done mine but i heard that really helps.

  • @christopherzawadski8458
    @christopherzawadski8458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    6l80e transmission has a thermostatic valve for the cooler line if often gets stuck open recycling hot fluid back into the trans which over heats and cooks the fluid causing all of the transmission problems

  • @SF-fm7ov
    @SF-fm7ov ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Sorry you're having trouble. I do think $300 for a transmission flush might be money well spent. I can't imagine where that fluid goes if it never wets your parking spot. As for coolant disappearing, I would suspect a head gasket even though there is no smoke yet. If you have a bad head gasket your problems are going to get very expensive if left unrepaired. My 2001 GMC Sierra with 5.3 has only needed a fuel tank sender, alternator, and just last week I replaced the steering gearbox. It has over 270,000 miles. It is mostly highway miles, but it also pulls an 8k pound travel trailer in the Rockies. Can't help but worry that my next one won't be as good.

    For the people saying the 6l80 transmissions are junk you need to do the thermal bypass mod !!!....search on you tube. These transmissions run way too hot before the thermal bypass opens and sends the fluid to the rad. This will lengthen the life of the transmission dramattically...no joke!! Will drop temps 25%. The entire mod takes 15 min.

    I would suggest changing your transmission fluid. I believe the interval for those transmissions are around 50,000 miles so you’re well over and those trans need regular changes anyway… as far as the coolant, could be intake gaskets. The dex coolant has been known to cause issues but I’d definitely change the transmission fluid at the minimum. They’re know to go out around 130,000 miles without the fluid being changed.

If you don't put it to its full potential it will break down. I also stay on top of my fluid changes. Not a single leak. Only thing I could think of are my course mechanic hands rubbing my steering wheel down eating away the material. But thats not gonna cause problems.

    Coolant: check your drain hose at the firewall…may be a leaking heater core.
    Transmission fluid: cooler lines are known to leak, check those. You will see wet spots on the inside of your skid plate if you look down the front of the engine at it with a flashlight. You could also smell a funky odor in the engine compartment you can’t identify…and smell it through the vents at a stop light when the engine is hot. Could also be transmission rear seal or transfer case seal, but you would see that on the ground. Transmission fluid doesn’t evaporate like oil and the transmission shouldn’t “use” fluid.
    One problem with the 6L80 is the torque converter. Replace it with a Sonnax billet converter before current one grenades and sends shrapnel thru your front pump and destroys your transmission. My converter let go at 96,000 and it was $6100 to replace the entire transmission with a GM Reman (extended warranty covered $4000).
    The other problem with the 6L80 is temperature. GM runs them too hot and admitted it. Look up TSB 21-NA-199 and have it done; I had it done when the transmission was replaced. Transmission will run 25-40 degrees cooler in all driving schemes and I believe running cooler temps will prolong the life of the “new” transmission. Have the cooler lines checked at the same time. Those lines leak at the metal-to-rubber crimps and are considered by GM to be wear items.
    Replace your PCV every 40,000…it’s not a maintenance item for GM it is for me.
    Change your oil every 5000 miles OR LESS…ignore the oil life computer. AFM, DFI, VVT and GDI engines DEMAND clean oil. Give them clean oil.
    These engines use oil but the oil cooler lines are prone to leak just like the transmission lines (GM considers these lines wear items too), so check those oil cooler lines and replace them if they become wet on/around those crimps.
    Just a few things off the top, mine has the 4.3 LV3 and other than transmission problems I have had no trouble and it doesn’t burn oil, not even at 105,000 miles…still has AFM as well and no trouble.

      I have a 2013 5.3 that I bought brand new with 6 miles on the odometer, now with 178,000+ miles. The only thing I've had to do on the engine mechanical is replace the water pump 3 times due to a defective shaft seal leaking. the original lasted to around 150,000 and the second one ( GM professional style china) around 20,000. Third water pump with Original OEM style, more money but actually has GM on the pump housing. Always try to go back with Original style if you can. The trans is still holding up very good, pulls anywhere from 3500 to 8000 LBS from time to time no problem. I must say, I did add the Hypertech power programmer , bumped the line pressure up to 25 % when the truck still had 50,000 miles on it, and disabled the 4 to 8 cylinder mode, my MPGs never changed. At every 50,000 miles, I drained and replaced the transmission filter, that is key to getting the most from the Trans. Living in Florida, the climate changes from season to season can be either be hot and humid or cold and humid with lots of moisture to take a toll on parts, especially if living near salt water. I don't think you'll have much to worry about if you do regular maintenance.

    Did the OP share if this truck was new? I missed it if so.
    I know that truck needs a trans service every 50k miles, and if skipped, I'm assuming that's an issue. Manufacturers try to skimp ad thin as possible on factory maintenence so they can get a low cost of ownership on the window sticker. You skip the basics, you're asking for trouble.
    PODS airbag thing can also go out from liquids on the seat sensors. I noticed the seat looked like it had stains on it :(
    Bulb length of life is dependent on the bulbs themselves and how they are installed. Not the truck.
    Oil -theres something wrong. You should get it diagnosed. But I don't think it's common for any vehicles to eat a quart of oil in 1k miles besides the Audi 2.0t engines from a while back (actual lawsuit) Something happened to that engine.
    The AC issue is bull. My buddy had the same thing. I will admit that.
    I think we are missing a ton of info here without the actual diagnostics... :(

      What I'm about to say is just a theory but I think what really takes the 6l80 and kills it is the super low rear end gearing that gm puts in the silverados as well as trucks w 4wd. I'm not sure what rear gear ratio the Van's have but I'd assume its higher than the 3.08 that the majority of silverados with 6l80 problems have. I also have noticed though that 2wd applications like the Van's seem to be fine. Something in the 4wd application or maybe just the super low gearing is putting too much stress on the trans, it sure feels like it sometimes in my truck
