Love the xj. Had 3 (2 red 1 grey) all s models. Unfortunelly lost 2 to cafe racers lovers, just trashed them ☠️. Gave the last one to my dad who rides her in the summer. Great first big bikes! After 17 bikes, got stuck with a 850 tdm that I love to travel and commute. Keep it original 👌🏻. Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹
Great stuff mate, personally I hate cafe racers, aside from being ugly they're just bolt-on bikes "built" by hipsters. Twin round headlights would look awesome but it's already a cool looking bike as it is 👌
Bigger jets in the cars, braided break hoses. Get yourself a few more bhp and better braking, maybe look into firming up the suspension if my memory is right the front forks are a bit squishy. Different internals might firm it up.
Loved the video Miles. It's a great feeling getting a bike with problems sorted and roadworthy. Did the same myself this week. I'm just really enjoying where you are going with the channel. Every video is fresh. Keep them coming!
Smart to start with small modifications on a relatively simple bike. I upgraded my XJ600S front light to LED but wouldn't want to do much else. Have fun restoring the battle tested XJ, not many Diversions with more adventures then that one I guess. I intend to drive mine to Nordkapp this summer, fingers crossed.
Haha fun to see some like it if you change it and some don't. For me: I would love to see you change the XJ, I have (as you probably know) the same bike and also plan on changing it in future when I can afford a different bike beside this one. Cheers mate✌️
Let's face it Miles, you have there a really nice bike in quite good condition ; believe me, I have done MANY bikes, and if I were you, I would rather try to embellish it than get out the angle grinder and wreck it. To start, the seat is the thing that sucks the most - get yourself a custom seat made by a guy who has a good eye ; nothing extreme, just more stylish. And then the boring wheels, you can find sexier but inexpensive wheels that will fit the standard forks and brakes, from many junkyards, or new if you have the funds - you have to look around. Then, proceeding with one touch at a time, a custom paintjob, on the fairing, tank and maybe the frame - but nothing fancy, no chopper style paint, could really be stylish. Take the time for your inspiration (and your bank account) to ripen. After that, bit by bit, you will find lots of smart detail parts - levers, mirrors, all that kind of stuff to go with whatever theme you have started. Just don't try to do it all at once, that's my best advice.
On mine the only thing i would change is the headlight, i would swap it for a dual round headlight without changing the front fairing. 3D print an adapter to fit the two round ones in the place of the original. On your's expecially not beeing your main bike, i wouldn't limit my self, the sky is the limit and fitting a diferent bikes front or rear would be sweet, like a GPZ900 front or someting like that.
I can understand that you would like to have fun with a project bike and I would love to see the results of it, but I really like the looks of the bike as it is. They are rare and it's nice to see yours in the condition it is in. But it's not mine, so my opinion doesn't count for much. Anyway, have fun and I look forward to see what becomes of it!
Thanks for the nice words I will definitely take it in to consideration when thinking about this. Crazy how things can be that different around the world when it comes to motorcycles. This is here one of the most common bikes on the used market
In my opinion all it needs is a wider handle bar and a modern seat. You could also go for mirrors. But there's really no point in any major changes, like belive me, fitting a fairing from a different bike isn't as easy as it seems, most times it would be easier to make a fairing from scratch. The paint looks pretty decent too, so maybe it only needs a polish, but if you want something "custom" about the bike, repainting it is the easiest route.
@@FreeMilesMC Yes but working with composite materials is messy and takes a lot of patience. If all you're looking for is a square headlight, just cut a hole big enough for one to fit. But then it's irreversible and invasive. I don't think it's a good bike for anything majorly custom so I'd stick with improving the comfort with the seat and handlebars, maybe grips. But the most radical change I'd reccomend is an exhaust system.
Ahh this was my first bike! Rode it until it was completely worthless. Rusting exhaust is the low point of this bike. Would love to see you making it a 80s retro!
Hey Miles, this bike is finished, and it is looks very handsome. I recommend you to enjoy it a bit further. Maybe you can turn its shape a bit later. But your other non running bikes screaming to being turned into something wild. This bike ment to be ridden. (But it is my recommendation, i'm not in your place, i will watch the followings)👍
There is some custom potential so, go to the Custom Motorcycle Show at Bad Salzuflen for some ideas and inspiration. Talk to the exhibitors and take photos or make a 🎥 about it.
Hi. I have one bike like that from 1994, and install the headlight from the 1250 gs. In my oppinion it looks great, but it's doubtable because it was made by me.
IMHO,the XJ looks perfect as it is.To be honest, for me at least 90% of all customice attempts are definitly a worsening(Sorry Atze!).Please don't ruin your XJ😂, otherwise i might subscibe.Just joking,do what you like.BTW ,you have to be careful with new tires for much more than 10 km.
I definitly get your Point☺️. Yes i know more then 10 Kilometers it’s just the First 10 are espacially sketchy. The thing is i have to start somewhere and i would love to start Building motorcycles and the xj is a good Platform to start on as i would feel Like it’s disrespectful to potentially Ruin a bike well know for Custom bikes or a bike that can be considerd a Classic so I have to start learning the craft somewhere 😬
Personally i think that customizing this bike will not bring any value to it, outside of you getting the relevant experience and confidence. I would not be modifying this one, as the platform is quite dated (suspension, brakes etc...). Also there is the case of motivation because once you start you will need a lot of time to finish it. The way you put it it does not really sound as an over the winter quickie and once spring comes you will be itching for the road east. That being said - its your bike do with it as you will, but before starting, please go get a decent welder, learn how to weld, grind, drill and tap holes in most metals. In any case keep up with the vids.
It’s Nice The way in is but of you want to customize it low budget make it rat💪🏻 Matt Black rust and of something breaks repair it with stuff that you have or find 🐀🐀 ratbikes are build not bought
I think you are tired of this bike. But you don't want to sell it. You can make something absurd out of it that you wouldn't do with another bike. For example, make all the plastic parts transparent (from plexiglass), including the tank. Or a tricycle, like here th-cam.com/video/SLb70tMrdxk/w-d-xo.html Such modifications will not harm the factory parts, if necessary, you can return everything to stock condition
Performance modifications would be first on my list. Jet up 2 steps and raise the needles one washer each. Suspension and brakes next, source bolt on parts from compatible Yamaha sport bikes. Don't use this bike for wheelies or donuts. Turning a sportbike into a cafe racer is as stupid as turning a dirt bike into a scrambler, why downgrade? You're smarter than this, start acting accordingly. Ride, wrench, repeat.
I founded your channel dur to this XJ. And I really appreciate your adventure with this bike. You should do new abroad adventure.
Please, don't change it 😢 I've been watching because I have the same bike!
Only if the concept is really good. But first I would improve performance anyway
That was fast! I've watched all your videos and enjoy seeing my bike! But have fun whatever you do with it
@ and also most likely it won’t be the last xj on the channel as this is a very approachable and affordable platform
Glad to hear it
Kansas City, MO

Personally i think the bike looks great as it is . I would just add the shark look. Alan Northern Ireland 👍
You are right it’s good that the xj is also getting some appreciation for its normal look☺️
Hell yeah, the XJ is back in business.
Love the xj. Had 3 (2 red 1 grey) all s models. Unfortunelly lost 2 to cafe racers lovers, just trashed them ☠️. Gave the last one to my dad who rides her in the summer. Great first big bikes! I think the 80s look would be great! Maybe some vapor wave inspiration with the coloring. But whatever makes you happy is key.
Actually thank you I have seen that before but never knew the word maybe it will land on the bike 😉
These are great bikes! I used mine for commuting, long trips, 2-up, and even some light off road. Tons of great resources out there.
I like the fighter plane look
Loved the video Miles. It's a great feeling getting a bike with problems sorted and roadworthy. Did the same myself this week. I'm just really enjoying where you are going with the channel. Every video is fresh. Keep them coming!
It looks nice like that I would personally not change anything
I belive old school bikes.. special 80 and 90 years.. good luck 😊
Glad the bike is back!!!!
You can just keep it and then you will see. :)

Passed my test on one of these. Adequate bike but a good base for customizing for sure.

Very nice concept
feiere deine videos richtig :)
Das Wetter ist hier gerade leider eine katastrophe... kaum hell, nur nass und kalt
Vielen dank für die netten Worte, ja ist leider nicht ideal aber mit etwas Kreativität kann man auch mit dem Wetter was machen☺️

crash bars/sliders, hand guards and storage. Make it an all weather crash protected stunt ready machine.

go with the streetfighter/ ratfighter look
A faired rat fighter look would be cool too

Actually that’s pretty mutch the plan first the other bikes ☺️
Look up the brazilian version of the XJ6, you might gain a pretty good inspiration for mods
Hey as long as the road is fairly dry and you want to suffer being cold on the bike for us, show us around your region!
There is some custom potential so, go to the Custom Motorcycle Show at Bad Salzuflen for some ideas and inspiration. Talk to the exhibitors and take photos or make a 🎥 about it.
29th November until 1st December
That is actually a really great idea sadly I am busy on these days 😬

Do a Graffiti paint job on it or rust patina all over
