You don't have to go back that long. The UK at the height of it's power in the 1930s and right upto I'm guessing the 60's was full of small workshops building industrial components in similar fashion. Lots of videos from that time show hard men in long sleeved shirts and ties working in what would today be considered dangerously basic workshops sometimes little more than 4 walls and a roof. We lot are lucky and should appreciate it.

I cast metal all the time and yes aluminium would last you the afternoon, but I know cos I tried, many times, gears have to be machined not cast. they are too exact
@@tibblescat2918 Well, besides the precision, it's also aluminum. Aluminum wouldn't last an hour in that application, I would think. While watching this, I kept asking myself; "Why is he casting it in aluminum?" I suppose the videographer wanted it that way for demonstration purposes after reading the description. Also, rough castings are sometimes used to help produce precision parts, but the casting is then machined to get the final part.
For those mocking his skills-it was not a part to be used in a car considering the power demand-he was just showing what he can do.He has learnt the art of preparing green sand for casting of which many do not how to do it.My fear evaporated when the cast part came out okay-my respects to his art.One thing people should know for a fact -a company like Ferrari still cast their potent V12 engines and that is why they are expensive because every one them that turns out imperfect must be sent to the smelter once more to be redone.
He's making a part out of a weaker material by far inferior materials than the original. This gear will strip within a month, stranding someones grandmother and children to be eaten by crocodiles.
It is true that he is using a weaker metal than the original but the point is that he is trying to show what he can do-for sure that part cannot be used in real life applications unless it is an alloy of aluminum.Another thing to smelt steel will require a better furnace with the right output to do the job-the furnace he is using is good enough for aluminum smelting @@ZacLowing

Using aluminum for gears though? Hate to be the person using this when it gives out from high stress or wear from steel abrasion. Soft metal to hard contact points... Not a good combination.
Not to detract anything from his skill or craftsmanship, this here is better than anything i could made with a sand mold, and also way faster; but i feel this has to be said: They are pretty bad gears. First of all, aluminium alloys are pretty bad at being gears. Also, the surface on the part is like the moon, even from this distance (duh, it's cast), so you'd still need to gring the teeth, and that will make the teeth physically smaller, so the contact pattern is also ruined. It's not that he's bad as a craftsman, just that this is quite possibly the worst example
Every time I get down on myself and feel like just eating a bullet; I watch one of these amazing people that have 1/1000 th of what I have and think to myself....if I did off myself I wouldn't blame God a bit for sending me to a place like this, just to make a point.

That is basic, elementary science. There is nothing to be surprised by in this video. Again, basic science. I give this guy a thumbs up, but I would NEVER be ignorant enough to assume an entire demographic has an IQ of 70 or less just because "I" am impressed by something. That also means you are smug and think too highly of yourself and assume everyone else is less intelligent than you. Arrogance.... How drole.... 😒 How lowbrow.

@@tibblescat2918 Well, besides the precision, it's also aluminum. Aluminum wouldn't last an hour in that application, I would think. Hard to believe people actually gave this a thumbs down. What did they expect and what more could he have done to earn their respect...?

If you knew how hard it was to cast something you'd really appreciate this,
Using aluminum for gears though? Hate to be the person using this when it gives out from high stress or wear from steel abrasion. Soft metal to hard contact points... Not a good combination.

Tom B If you design a weak spot in the gate, the sprue will break off pretty easily.
This guy makes metallic gears all by himself without using electrical or sophisticated machinery... incredible 👍
Not to detract anything from his skill or craftsmanship, this here is better than anything i could made with a sand mold, and also way faster; but i feel this has to be said:
They are pretty bad gears. First of all, aluminium alloys are pretty bad at being gears.
Also, the surface on the part is like the moon, even from this distance (duh, it's cast), so you'd still need to gring the teeth, and that will make the teeth physically smaller, so the contact pattern is also ruined.
It's not that he's bad as a craftsman, just that this is quite possibly the worst example
nah he is just making parts that look like gears, even if it was made from a gear steel it wouldn't last long as the mesh would be a mess.
Умелые руки. Шестерёнка получилась, как настоящая, только из алюминия.
