One of, if not the MOST exciting finish to the Indianapolis 500. I'll never forget it. Became a Rick Mears fan after that day. Amazing job by Gordy as his friends called him.
That's one of THE best 500's. EVER. And you were there. 😮 😅😅😅 BADASS ! Mears was closin fast w/7lp togo.. they were inside ..outside..foot TO THE FLOOR. Whatta fin ! Johncock SENT IT in turn 3. (Hell bent..checkers or wreckers) Wasn't goin to be denied BADASS move
This race happened back in the days of the delayed broadcast. I remember hearing it on radio first and then I couldn't wait to see the TV broadcast that night
Nice crisp audio. But should have been kept with the format of the original broadcast - ditch the music - which is never good in a motorsports video unless it is a Tribute video of some sort.

I was in the infield, 3rd Turn, fingers and nose thru the chain link fence. It was LOUD.
I was THERE! Twelve years old. 400,000 people going nuts. So exciting!
I can see why it'd be so exciting! Closest finish in Indy history at that point by a long shot!
@CycloneSakura He was gaining 1-2 seconds per lap. People could feel it. Johncock's car had worn tires. He drove his ass off.

The greatest finish ever.
'92 and 2021 is definitely up there as well, but I can see that.
Best I ever saw, I'll say that !

This new generation of Indycar NEEDS this coupling of energy

I could not watch. Music way too load and not needed at all.
CHUPA RICKI MIARS
Whom was best at turning only left that year? Such a wanker race.
Mears tested against Nelson Piquet in 1980. Mears' laps were only 0.5 seconds behind, and he'd never been in an F1 car.
29 wins, 40 poles, 3 championships, and four Indy 500s.
