I have a very special place in my heart for this movie. My grandpa was a bit of a hermit himself, who lived by himself and didn’t really have much in the way of modern entertainment. I spent a summer living with him in my teen years and we became really close. One evening I convinced him to try renting a couple of movies (the only 3 he owned were Happy Gilmore, Young Guns and Young Guns 2). So we went down to the local grocery store and rented Secondhand Lions, and on top of it being something of a mirror of our situation he really loved it (He had no idea Robert Duvall was still acting at the time). He passed a couple years ago, but I still have vivid memories of that summer. Very happy to see you enjoy this movie!

The biggest teen was played by an actor named Travis Willingham who made it big with a D&D stream called Critical Role. He has told the story at conventions and such that while shooting the fight scene, Robert Duvall kept punching him in the face because he thought Travis was a stuntman who knew how to take the hit without getting hurt. When he found out Travis was an actor, not a stuntman, Duvall ended up yelling at the director for not telling him sooner. 😂

I was excited when I heard you were going to do this movie. It's a beautiful story. I love Hub's speech, and I just wish we got to hear the whole thing. Saying someone "died with their boots on" means they died in action, as opposed to dying in bed. Hub and Garth wanted to die fighting. Hub especially was afraid of becoming weak and useless. He wasn't sick with cancer or anything, but he kept doing dangerous things because he knew he was going to die sooner or later, and he wanted to be sure that he died in action, not wasting away or lying sick in bed. The comics at the end were drawn by Berkeley Breathed, the cartoonist who made "Bloom County" and "Opus".
My mother grew up in rural Tennessee. She had a lot of siblings, and once they fooled her into thinking that chewing tobacco was good to eat (they pretended to eat it, but were dropping it down their shirt collars). So she ate some and, as she put it, "was sick as a dog." She lived to be 90, so she got through that okay. Hell, she raised five kids of her own and got through us okay.
This story was a country legend here in Texas when I was kid. The two old men with untold riches, the pond, the boat, the lion in the cornfield. All of it was tale being told in East Texas when I was a kid in the early 70s.

I did like the ending (as opposed to the alternate one). His former adversary was obviously not only powerful, but an intelligent man who grew as a result of their encounters/rivalry. To think he grew to deeply respect them and to see the results in the more low-key and hospitable children/grandchildren, showed that Hub's influence helped him live a fruitful and honorable life himself.
If nobody mentioned it yet, there's a deleted scene in which Osment goes into the kitchen, and sees a bunch of information request postcards that Caine filled out, to bring salesmen out to the house (so that he & Duvall can shoot at them!), and Caine walks in & says something like "Please don't tell your Uncle Hub that I'm responsible for them coming here: it'll ruin his day." 🤣😅😂 Yes, Ashleigh, you must look at the works of both Caine and Duvall - they're a couple of class acts. I think this was the last film that Osment did as a child: his voice was indeed crackling in real life, so they had to get this film shot as fast as they could. Oh - you also saw a younger Osment in "Forrest Gump" (he was Hank's son at the end), and there's a few other fantastic films he did when he was young, "Pay It Forward", and "A.I.: Artifical Intelligence". Both may make you cry.
Unless i misunderstood the whole Hub thing , telling Walter he had to get his answers soon and making Hub promise to stick around to be his uncle and all that was implying that he was on the path to off himself. At least that was always my interpretation, that he had no will to live anymore
My takeaway from that scene is that Hub wanted to go out doing something meaningful/in-action, or as the movie says "with their boots on". Not sitting still and letting life pass by. I never thought of Hub wanting to off himself.

I always just assumed they were just old.. And they came home not necessarily to end their lives.. But thought their days were definitely much less lived. Which is why Walter says that have to do better to be around for him.
One of the best scenes was cut (but in the special features) , where they show Garth filling out cards for "yes I am interested in this product, please send a representative to tell me more!" explaining why the salesmen keep on coming lol.
Love seeing people react to this movie! One you don't see many reactions of, if any at all. One of my favorites growing up. 🥰 I'm pretty sure they just bought the lion they didn't keep the giraffe, would have been cool if they had a giraffe on their farm though.
I could watch Robert Duvall perform the phone book, but this is certainly a favorite. Nothing beats his portrayal of Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove though.
He can carry a movie all on his own, but I love it when he's a member of a really talented ensemble cast like in The Paper or A Civil Action, two underrated movies from the '90s.
You should see the great santini, tender mercies,or any of the many movies Robert Duvall is a legend,Apocalypse Now was amazing he only had a small part init but one of his iconic lines came from it. "I LOVE THE SMELL OF NAPALM IN THE MORNING"
This movie touches my heart every time. My dad and I quote it a lot and my favorite part is the end where they say: bury us in the corn patch next to the damn lion.
I'm 72, and I was watching both these guys when I was a kid. Robert Duvall started in TV and mostly did that in his early career. First notable film role (altho he was only on screen for a couple minutes) was as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. He was in True Grit, MASH, The Godfather I and II, Apocalypse Now, Tender Mercies, Stalin, The Apostle, Deep Impact, John Q, Open Range... Michael Caine was in Deadfall, Too Late the Hero, Get Carter, The Eagle has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Fourth Protocol, a bad Jaws sequel, the Dark Knight series (as Alfred)... he won Best Supporting Actor for The Cider House Rules (1999), beating out Tom Cruise... told Cruise in his acceptance speech that he did him a favor, keeping Cruise's asking price per picture from dropping down 10 million.
He also says that drawing the “fake” cartoons for this movie reminded him how much he loves doing actual strips. So it was shortly after this that he started his “Opus” strip. 😊 That one didn’t last super long, but at least it got him drawing again! And now we have some real gems on his Facebook page that he updated from time to time. His run in 2020 was particularly epic!
I am so glad that you chose this movie, it is one of my favorites. This movie reminds me of my Papa. I grew up working my families dairy/beef farm, and growing up and working with him I have seen so many people come to the farm who will sit and talk with him for hours. After he passed away, we had to have 3 days of a wake to accommodate all the people who came to see him before the funeral, and that was immediate family only. I talked with so many people who spoke so highly of him. I found out more about him in those 3 days than I did in the 32 years I had grew up and worked around him, and how he affected so many lives. He really was a treasure that the world has lost. Love you Papa and can't wait to see you again.
I actually love this movie. Not only do Robert Duvall and Michael Caine kill it, the younger versions were great, and the story was fantastic. Thanks to this movie, I developed a life-long fascination with early 20th century history. The adventure components of this movie led me to reading Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. Rider Haggard, and even Robert E. Howard's El Borak stories.
This movie was such a pleasant surprise. Went in expecting nothing. It became a favorite. ETA: I didn't remember until I saw the opening, but Berkley Breathed (sp) wrote the screenplay. He's the cartoonist who drew Bloom County. The cartoons on Walter's wall when he gets the call about his uncles are Bloom County-esque cartoons.
There was an interview with Ostmon where he said he made his voice crack on purpose. In the final scene where he gives a lecture to the uncles he made it stop because he'd finally grown up.
The art looks like Berkeley Breathed’s beautiful comic work. He created the comic strip Bloom County (with Opus the Penguin) and the Christmas book “A Wish for Wings That Work,” which Amblin turned into a fantastic Christmas cartoon.
Great choice. It reminds me of family stories about my great grandfather and great uncle from the late 1800s. The hospital scene was my grandfather if he had left the hospital by dropping himself off a balcony and taking the bus home. That generation had the best stories and enough of them were true to amaze the grandkids. Thanks for reacting to this.
I watched this not long after it came out and enjoyed it, but ultimately forgot about it. I rediscovered it years later when Travis Willingham (one of the four punks and later a voice actor and member of critical role) talked about his experience on set. Now I always imagine the movie from their point of view and that one strange day that changed their lives forever.
The closing credit background were the drawings of a strip called Walter and Jasmine presented as the work of grown up Walter. They were done by cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County, Outland, and Opus).
Hi, Ashleigh. Yeah, Halley Joel Osmet did go through puberty during this production. Luckily, they filmed all the scenes in chronological order so there weren't any lapses in continuity where in a later scene he's obviously younger like Chris Makepeace in "Meatballs"(WHICH YOU MUST WATCH TOO...Bill Murray's first film).
This is one of those movies that I didn't want to watch but my mom made me watch it and I went into it already feeling negative about it but halfway through I was glued and by the end I loved it! It's a deep childhood memory for me
Ashleigh, did you know Disney made a movie specifically for you? It's called The Three Lives of Thomasina. 1963. Its OUTSTANDING and you will love every stinking minute of it. I can't believe Paterons haven't had you watch it yet. Patreon members please! The Three Lives of Thomasina! You know you loved it...
@@sherigrow6480 Mine too! The whole movie is available for free on TH-cam. I've watched it recently and it completely holds up. If you haven't listened to the intro song in a while, I highly recommend looking it up for nostalgia's sake. And then also imagine how Ashleigh would react to the intro alone, not even counting the whole movie.
hubb wasn't dying (just went to the hospital due to all the meat and carrying all the lion food probably gave him a heart attack or something). throughout the film, he has a death wish, due to lack of jasmine and no longer being a soldier. it isn't until walter becomes his son that he gets a new purpose.
Secondhand Lions is one of my favorite coming-of-age stories. I would also recommend the movie Cloak and dagger, it has the bonus of Dabney Coleman who plays the young protagonist's father and imaginary best friend.
The comics at the end are based off of a comic strip called bloom county/opus comics. The director was a fan of the man who did the comics and sent him a letter asking him to make something for the movie, which was then used as adult walters comics called: walter and jasmine. Although I think most would see it as a calvin and hobbs comic reference. The movie gave you some new hallowbeans costume ideas for beans too. You got a lion and a mafia beans idea.
Oh, this is such a fantastic little-known movie!! Whomever suggested it for Ashleigh, thumbs up to you!!! I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t love it. Ah, Nichole! Good job!

Ooh, I absolutely love this movie. One year on a whim, I picked it up for my Dad sight unseen for his birthday. We sat down and watched it, and both of us absolutely adored it along with Mom. I was happy I found a movie we could all enjoy, even after Dad got sick.
I am so happy that you watched this. It's one of my favorite movies, and I ran across it purely by accident. It was an afterthought DVD that I checked out at the last minute from the library, and I wasn't sure that I was even going to watch it at the time.
The phrase "died with their boots on" relates back to another movie you've reviewed. In Tombstone as Doc Holliday is dying he laughs when he looks at his bare feet. He had been trying to "die with his boots on" for years. He laughs at the irony.
I don't remember a lot about this movie, but I 100% know Ashleigh is going to cry lol - The perks of being a wallflower, the way way back and the peanut butter falcon were 3 movies that got me. Edit: Am I the only one that doesn't mind brushing teeth without water? Your spit is liquid and that's all you need haha - Wow, you held it together :)
So happy you are finally doing this one. Robert Duval is one of my favorite actors. Another really good, rarely known, hard to find movie of his is "The Apostle".
My 32 and 33 year old sons love this movie to this day. This brings back such sweet memories of their youth and mine as well... my grandparents lived in a tiny remote town and I spent every break from school there.
Thanks for the reaction. Reminded me that I have the movie on DVD. Should watch it again ... one of these days. PS: For a fun caper film with Michael Caine/Shirley MacLaine, check out Gambit (1966).
Had to post Hub's speech...really wish people could and would live by it. "Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love... true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in."
Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are terrific actors. I would be up for Ashleigh to react to more of their movies. A few of favorites off the top of my head that I consider "must see" are "Tender Mecies" which earned Duvall the Academy Award for Best Actor, "The Man Who Would Be King" which co-stars Sean Connery and has a rating of 91 on Metacritic and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and "The Eagle Has Landed" starring Caine as the main character and Duvall in a relatively small but essential supporting role.
Michael Caine was in so many great movies. His first movie was "ZULU", and is well worth a watch. Robert Duvall was also in great movies. I really like "Lonesome Dove" and "Open Range". They are coincidentally both westerns. However; he is known for "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now" (I love the smell of napalm in the morning.... smells like VICTORY!)
A special and wonderful just under the radar pick..I don't know how this isn't a completely universally beloved new classic... But to me it definitely is.
I own the DVD and I think its in the :bonus: stuff that they had a very hard time getting this movie made. The studios didnt want to do it Hard to imagime isn't it?
@@peggygoddard8038 sadly it's not. I think at the time it was probably just considered "too old-fashioned".. Which is what makes it great because it makes it timeless.
I was just thinking about this movie this morning. And seeing that you're reacting to one of my favorite movies i had to get home and bring it up on the big screen.
Purina really does make lion chow. I remember an old commercial where they advertised ALL of their varieties. The punchline was "We also make chow for dogs and cats."
My Grandfather was a pilot in WW2, and I didn't know it until almost the year he died. I knew my father had been born on an Army Air Corps base in Texas, but I never new Papap was a pilot. No one ever spoke of it. Once, after I found out, I was having trouble with a realistic flight simulator game. I asked him how you recover from a stall. 50+ years later and he rattled off the procedure like he was sitting in the cockpit. I wonder sometimes about what stories he had inside that were just too painful to tell.
My Dad was a Naval Lt. He headed a squad of deep sea demolition men during WW II. He wouldn't talk about it, other than one time, on one day when he was drunk, he talked about being on the deck of a small vessel with his assignment being clearing wrecks blocking shipping lanes approaching the Normandy beaches. Back then, the suits were the kind you see in old movies or Looney Toons, big brass helmet and a heavy canvas body suit. Air was supplied through a hose by compressors on the the deck of that small vessel. The lanes had to be cleared because the area was within artillery range of cliffs towering above the shore. He talked about the feeling he experienced realizing all the divers under his command, all of them teenagers, would die in the cold waters of the English Channel if an artillery shell hit his ship.
Robert Duvall is not related to Shelly. If you want to see his other best role beside this film look for To Kill a Mockingbird. Haley Joel Osmont is also famous for being the voice of Sora in the Kingdom Hearts games. Sir Michael Caine is the one with the glasses. Do you think if you had a pet lion Beans would get along with it? Died with thier boots on is a famous saying meaning: A person who dies with their boots on keeps working to the end. You previously heard it in Tombstone and Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
One of the best coming of age speeches ever put to film.
Shout out to Travis Willingham! (He played the largest young ruffian in the barfight) He is currently the CEO of critical role and the bestest buddy barbarian ever in the most amazing show on prime video, The Legend of Vox Machina!!! Go watch it everyone, it's amazing.
I drop that Movie recommendation quite often on her comments. I don't think shes ever gonna watch that movie. And If she does she's gonna say "Howcome y'all never talk about this movie more"
@@stephenfawkingiii8779 Make vicious & over-the-line personal attacks on her & her cat when making the recommendations. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, right? On second thought... that might be a bad idea. Yeah, don't do that.
Love how Travis Willingham (Fullmetal Alchemist, Critical Role, Voice of Superman in a few things lately) is one of the four greasers in the scene at the BBQ joint. Also, anyone else always get Big Fish vibes off this movie?
This is a little hidden gem that not a lot of people know about. I worked in a video store, and really had no intention of watching this when it came out. One of my jobs was to check movies if a customer said it didn't play right, and this one showed up in the pile one day. I fell in love with it and bought a copy immediately. I've always loved these types of coming of age stories where it's told from the perspective of an adult talking about their childhood. I highly recommend checking out a movie from 1998 called Simon Birch. Also, Now & Then from 1995. I think you'd like them both.
Guy Berkeley "Berke" Breathed is an American cartoonist known for his comic strips Bloom County, Outland, and Opus. He did the cartoon panels you see as Walter's work. Breathed called them, "the comic strip that never was."
Haley Joel Osment was indeed going through puberty when they hired him for the role. The producers liked the way his voice would crack while doing his lines. This movie instantly became a family favorite the first time we watched it.
This movie is one of my all-time favorites. The comics were drawn by Berkeley Breathed, whose most well-known comic is Bloom County (Opus the Penguin is perhaps his most famous creation).
Robert Duvall is an amazing actor. If you’re interested in seeing more of him, allow me to suggest two of his lesser known, but absolutely incredible performances: The Apostle and Get Low. ✌️
I love this movie so much. I have been waiting for it since you first announced it. The man who directed this movie is the one who wrote it. They filmed this movie in Texas a few miles away from where I live. Michael Caine was in a movie Cider House Rules (1999). You might want to watch that. A movie with Robert Duval, Phenomenon. For an English man, Michael Caine did pretty good with a Texas accent in this Secondhand Lions movie.
Love Cider House Rules! It’s the only movie Tobey Maguire’s deadpan, dead eyes, wooden acting actually fits the part he’s playing. Like the dude had absolutely no emotions and plays every part the exact same. I always thought he only got roles as he & Leonardo DiCaprio are best friends and that helped.
When this movie played in my town my best friends mom owned the local theatre. It was his job to put up the marquis sign and he put "Second Hand Loins" instead of "Second Hand Lions". Yeah, some people got the wrong idea what kind of movie it was. LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE this movie, and I knew you would like it. There is an alternate ending, which I actually like more. The cartoons that they show were done for the movie by the artist who does "Bloom County". You really need to see the alternate ending.
I watched this right after my grandpa passed away, and right before Christmas… the ending had me uncontrollably SOBBING 😭😭 9/10 movie for me! I love it so much ❤❤❤

OHHHH that makes a LOT more sense than what I was thinking.
My takeaway from that scene is that Hub wanted to go out doing something meaningful/in-action, or as the movie says "with their boots on". Not sitting still and letting life pass by. I never thought of Hub wanting to off himself.
@@Mumfy64 i can see it like that but by being purposely reckless which result in his death.
@Ashleigh Burton like I said 21 jump street movie based on the tv show of the same name about a group of police officers who looked younger than they really were and would help people and kids who were going down the dark side and Peter deluise the son of dom deluise from Robin hood and men in ties played Doug penhal and young Johnny Depp played Tom Hanson not Henson Muppets creator and played the same characters in 21 jump street 2012 first I thought Tom and Doug were died but, according to the Wikipedia page they fake their deaths . You should see 21 jump street tv show on DVD the famous uncover of Tom and Doug was the McQuaid brothers and some of the cast of a nightmare on elam Street was on episodes of 21 jump street .Tom Hanson retired from the dea and owned a boiling ball place and Doug also retired from the dea too and is a prist . Tom Hanson has a tragic story about when he took a girl to a valentines dance and his cop father was shot while stop killed a killer robbery and the robber was killed as well as Tom Hanson Sr and his partner . Tom decided to be a cop and he started a ruff but he became more cooler and Tom had a bully that was a girl and she stop when at a little kid dance and she was love struck .Doug penhal was bully was a guy jack and he destroyed his uncle's classic car for 1950, and his uncle was playing by Peter deluise 's father dom deluise and it was prom night jack moved away and the girl is unknown what happened to her in the car .jack bully Doug with pranks and wedgies in school and high school in the 70s nor 80s . This is sad movie but it is moving . Johnny Depp decided to go and do his acting in movies and left 21 jump street in season 5 and Tom Hanson move to the dea and soon did Doug penhal .and 21 jump street tv show stopped at season 5 in 1994 I think ? Tell me if I am wrong or right in the comments section guys. Ernest Jim verny movies you need to see .
That's really cool!
Love seeing people react to this movie! One you don't see many reactions of, if any at all. One of my favorites growing up. 🥰 I'm pretty sure they just bought the lion they didn't keep the giraffe, would have been cool if they had a giraffe on their farm though.
asholery This is the first time I've seen anyone cover it.
I'm always commenting on reactors channels to watch this.
I could watch Robert Duvall perform the phone book, but this is certainly a favorite.
Nothing beats his portrayal of Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove though.
Open Range with Kevin Costner is very good
He can carry a movie all on his own, but I love it when he's a member of a really talented ensemble cast like in The Paper or A Civil Action, two underrated movies from the '90s.
He's in excellent in anything but my favourite performance of his is as Tom Hagen in The Godfather. Gus is probably my second favourite.

Hey Ashleigh can you do a movie called paranormal activity there's 5 of them

Phenomenon with John travalto Michael Cain is in it
I'm 72, and I was watching both these guys when I was a kid.
I think the comics were drawn by Berkeley Breathed who drew Bloom County and Opus. One of my favorites of all time.
They were, he's listed in the credits.
This is one of those underrated films that spread more by word of mouth than studio marketing. Just a good, solid movie from start to end.
OMG! This is my favorite movie of all time! I'm so glad you're watching it. This movie needs to be talked about more in my opinion.
For Michael Caine, you need to see "Zulu" (his break-through role), and the original 1969 "The Italian Job" as light-relief.
Also, Michael Caine and Sean Connery in “The Man Who Would Be King”. Both actors agree that it’s one of their favorite movies, if not THE favorite.
The art looks like Berkeley Breathed’s beautiful comic work. He created the comic strip Bloom County (with Opus the Penguin) and the Christmas book “A Wish for Wings That Work,” which Amblin turned into a fantastic Christmas cartoon.
You're right they mention him in the credits.
The art is by Berkeley Breathed.

Dying with your boots on is an expression meaning you died fighting, doing something adventurous or living life to the fullest..
I am glad you did this movie. This is one of my favorite of all time. Such a great story and wonderful ending.

This is the first movie you have reviewed that I haven't already seen! Thanks
I remember my mom bringing this home for my nephew and me one summer, and we watched it a lot. I hope everyone can see this movie at least once.
One of my favorite childhood movies.
This is one of the many reasons I enjoy when Ashleigh talks about movies.
I like to think the salesman was the dad from BigFish. The two movies feel related even though they really aren't. Love the reactions.

hubb wasn't dying (just went to the hospital due to all the meat and carrying all the lion food probably gave him a heart attack or something). throughout the film, he has a death wish, due to lack of jasmine and no longer being a soldier. it isn't until walter becomes his son that he gets a new purpose.
This is one of my favorites to watch when I need a cozy, feel good movie. When people say "comfort film", this is it for me. 🥰💙
Oh, this is such a fantastic little-known movie!! Whomever suggested it for Ashleigh, thumbs up to you!!! I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t love it.
Ah, Nichole! Good job!
Ooo! I haven't had a chance to watch this reaction yet but I was so hyped to see this on my home page I had to leave a comment and like🤩 There aren't many reactions to this movie on TH-cam and since this is an all-time personal favourite, like Big Fish, I'm so excited and grateful for you considering this film 💛✨
Can't wait to watch this after classes!
Ooh, I absolutely love this movie. One year on a whim, I picked it up for my Dad sight unseen for his birthday. We sat down and watched it, and both of us absolutely adored it along with Mom. I was happy I found a movie we could all enjoy, even after Dad got sick.
I love this movie. So underrated, maybe you’ll start a trend with reactors for this gem.
I LOVE this movie! I grew up with people like this. Gotta love Vets.
The mom is played by Kyra Sedgwick, most famous for The Closer and her many Emmy wins. Married for many years to Kevin Bacon.
@ashleighburton3 FAKE ASHLEIGH... you just joined 4 days ago and have 0 subscribers.
I dunno if they still do, but Purina used to make food for every animal you could imagine.
"This is the Air Cav, son. Air Mobile!"
One of my favorite movies all time. I hope in a few years I can be a Secondhand Lion.
A special and wonderful just under the radar pick..I don't know how this isn't a completely universally beloved new classic... But to me it definitely is.
I own the DVD and I think its in the :bonus: stuff that they had a very hard time getting this movie made. The studios didnt want to do it
Hard to imagime isn't it?
@@peggygoddard8038 sadly it's not. I think at the time it was probably just considered "too old-fashioned".. Which is what makes it great because it makes it timeless.

Purina really does make lion chow.
I remember an old commercial where they advertised ALL of their varieties.
The punchline was "We also make chow for dogs and cats."
Love this film. I watched it on TV when there was nothing else to watch. What a fun film.
Great film + Great review + Ashleigh's laugh = Good times.
This movie will always hold a very special spot in my heart. Hub's speech to Walter is one that always tugs at the heart strings.

This is a little hidden gem that not a lot of people know about. I worked in a video store, and really had no intention of watching this when it came out. One of my jobs was to check movies if a customer said it didn't play right, and this one showed up in the pile one day. I fell in love with it and bought a copy immediately.
