This is not a Distressor emulation. It is not even an emulation at all. It cannot be compared to anything else but itself (The Arousor) and it's what Dave Derr wanted Empirical Labs to develop and release.
Thanks for the in-depth review. I just purchased the Arousor this week and already getting to love it, because it’s so versatile and it’s on Version 3 which adds 2 Opto settings! Great job as always
I was watching an interview with Dave from NAMM the other day where he's explaining the difference between the UAD version and The Arousor. You may prefer one to the other, but people are comparing these two, when they are not even the same.
Ok I might be a little bit late for comment but...:This plugin is absolutely BEAST! Thanks for a review Mike and thanks that my wallet is 199$ lighter;) well spent dollars tho...
As close as you're ever going to get, Mike? What about the officially licensed Slate Stress coming out in like 5 days? LOL Not that this isn't a great compressor, I use it on almost every mix. And with the CPU optimization on V2, you can use as many instances as you like these days. Pricey, but a great tool.
You mean the one that was supposed to be released last year? I look forward to hearing it, but have yet to find a Slate emulation that has bested the market. This instantly felt familiar to my experience with the Distressor hardware in sound and feel.
It's out now! Curious to see what you think, if you have a chance to give it a try. He's adamant, of course, that it's a 1:1 emulation. Even at that, it doesn't have the bells and whistles the Arousor does (attack mod, parametric EQ, soft clipping), so I don't know that it would outperform the Arousor...
...mmm I kinda found the sound examples didn't really show off what his plugin might be able to do. Programmed rythmic elements like this are by their very nature already compressed with velocities set and there didn't seem to be any randomness to the samples. I think this plug in would come into its own on performed pieces. There's no magic to be had here no extras can be teased out of this loop.
For me, it was refreshing to hear what it does to programmed drums. Most examples you'll find online are on live elements, so it's nice to hear this on something else for once and get a feel for what it can do in other styles of music. Most songs I mix have programmed drums, so my perspective could well be different from yours. But, even so, I believe you can apply these same techniques on other styles. Great plug-in and review.
Really hard to tell how good this plug really is on such a garbage track. I would much prefer a performed track rather than a programmed one to fully appreciate the depth of Arousor
Bro you can DL the demo and try it for yourself. Michael's explaining is much appreciated.. That way you know your way around the plugin and any quarks when YOU demo it
my new routine has become a) check if Mike did a video on it, and then b) read manual later. thanks for another useful video!
Really loving the way this thing sounds. Also, that beat is really dope.

Doesn't have the same sonic definition as the hardware.
And thats digital for ya ☹️
Acustica Nebula gets closer.
too much talking as always with these videos, USELESS
I enjoy the history and details about the plugin then it’s easier to understand the demonstration
