Cali is still one of the best looking pups on TH-cam! Hope all is going well.
We had a golden when I was growing up, big female almost Cali's size. She used to do the same thing with her toys, lay them down by you when you weren't looking then sneak off.... she'd be waiting at the back door super still until you picked it up and walked toward her. Then she'd bolt off the deck and into the yard! She was a good dog, seeing Cali reminds me a lot of her. Especially all the hair and fondness of water!
Dogs are such hilarious companions with some of their antics. Mine often has me laughing she’s so daft ,crawls along the back of the sofa and rests her head on your shoulder.But she hides too,behind pillows ,covers herself with a throw.. I looked all over for her the one day ,as I turned around to come out of the bedroom she was behind me looking to see what I was looking for…When your on your own they are great company.I was terrified of dogs most of my life.This is my second one I have had and I would be lost without her as you would be with Callie…Love n Light to you both 🥰

What a wonderful soul. I miss my two “kids” so much. Cali reminds me of them. I so hope I get to see them again one day. I’m holding out that there’s an afterlife and that we’ll be reunited.

We had 2 from puppy to 15 and 16. It's been 4 and 5 yrs since they passed and we still aren't ready for more.

Hmm it seems the location of the new place is more open and sunny, vs so wooded at the old place -except for the garden and pond you built. She may well have overextended herself not realizing, sort of, how much more open and sunny this area is. So it makes sense she would seek shade, because she was often running in treed areas prior. Smart pup!!

Our Cali girl does a similar "hunt" mode when she's waiting for us to throw her dummy toy. We used to think some of her behaviors were specific to her but it appears many goldens have this natural instinct that if they are allowed to explore, it all shows up. For example, our girl does the same in water, sticks her face in, and knows to blow air out of her nose and bubbles and dive in the water. Amazing. Love our golden girl - from our Cali to yours!
My 7/8 golden 1/8 yellow lab mix picked up a similar habit at about 3 years old. in our case she would lie under shrubbery and/or a pine tree on the lot with her eyes glued fixed me. We started a game of my tossing a tennis ball towards her and she would spring out and grab it and then 'fetching' it. On hot days she would remain lying, almost hidden, and if the tennis balls came close enough she would grab them while only moving her head. Eventually she started doing the same at a local beach. I have several photos of her doing this to keep memories of her fresh and reminding of me of what a great breed goldens are. Wish I was young enough to be owned by another one.

I finally figured it out. It's her freedom that makes me feel light when I watch her. I've never owned a dog, partly because of all the "rules" a dog has within city limits. Leashes. Muzzles. Fences. etc. Watching Cali with none of those is just amazing!

Shes hearing all that wildlife alot better and clearer than humans, I would guess she doesn't want any predators to get the jump on her and she's protecting her territory and her dad.
Yep - She's sensing things that you don't. Possibly from quite a distance. She's protective.
Dogs do take their roll of protecting the pack very serious. And daddy is her pack. Years ago, I had some chow pitbull GShepard mix. Whenever friends visited, especially ones unfamiliar to my dogs, they would go and lay on those people's feet. Just enough to touch. That way the Dogs could sleep and keep watch of the visitors. For as soon as they moved, feet moved alerting dogs. It was quite amazing because they taught themselves this trick. And the chow likes to let someone come onto the property then stands quietly blocking the exit. In practice it is a pant soiling experience as one turns to leave, but sees doggy say no without a sound! Lol! All breeds have some tricks, that's breeding. But mutts have the best of all breeds in their tree, if inspired, or needed, the blending traits are amazing!

Agree with the other posters that she is hearing things that you don't. we have a dog, a mini Aussie and her hearing is quite astute. She is very afraid of loud noises and when there's a thunderstorm, she hears it minutes before we do and she tries to hide. Sometimes she even tries digging a hole in the living room floor. The vet has given us some medicine to help calm her.
...BUT D "NESSIES" LOOMING AROUND IS CERTAINLY HORRIBLE TO NOTE... AFTER I HAD MY ALSATIAN KILLEF BY A COBRA HIDING AMONGST TALL GRASS...
I just Love Cali she is so sweet natured and extremely patient. I think her odd habit is that she is playing a game with you and it really gets your attention.🐾❤

Conformation wise Cali is a gorgeous Golden Retriever. Her intelligence shows in her successful retrievals. She is a joy to watch.

I had noticed Cali hiding out and a bit more lethargic since her heat stroke episode. Am hoping no permanent damage and that she instinctively knows to pace herself in the humidity as she seems to cool off in the stream more frequently. But hard to gauge as we obviously don’t see her 24/7 like you do. It was good of you to post this as I’m sure many fans are concerned for her and your well-being….your other 3 girls too!!

New habitat new behaviour, a new descovery of her reaction to your action, and reaction within the new environment. You are doing what we all love, making, liifting, constructing. She'll find ways to interact with you, and patience is something she has learnt. She has many other stimulus, it's not as if she is left on her own in a flat in a city somewhere. They pick up on when we laugh, they know when it is to trust, love and 'Got your back human pack loyalty'. She is yours, you are doing a good job. Keep watchful, keep loving her, and keep yourself safe Sir! The machine beast that you are. My respect is still well earned, Sir!. m

I swear that Cali understands every word you say. The two of you are SO connected ~ it's amazing! Like when her throw toy was floating downstream and you said, "it's floating away" ... and it was not until you said this that she immediately started to go after it. It warms the heart to watch the way you two interact.

Shawn, you mentioned preserving wood. Years ago, my grandpa made a wooden chair, and had decided to use lacquer finish on it. However, he couldn't find anything adequate to thin it with, so he added a bit of kerosene. It wasn't too bad in the cooler months, but as summer came around, it tended to get sticky, and no one wanted to sit on it. Our choices are important. He was a bit of a pain at times as he was never wrong...
Cali seems to be settling in to her new homestead. Everyday is a new adventure, so the knowledge is bringing out new behaviors. She’s so fun to watch.💯❤️😀🙋🏽♀️✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸

Don't worry Cali; my goldendoodle Goose did the same thing from the time she was a puppy. It took me a good while to figure out she was playing hide-and-seek and peek-a-boo, but we humans eventually catch on and then the fun begins!
We have a Golden retriever too, they are sooo nice and cute , they are players, keepers, hunters, carers, love Cali and they could make a lovely couple , sadly we are in Europe :) . Love your videos and we are fans of Cali!!!
My 12 1/2 year old golden, Tucker, is working through some stuff right now. Golden’s have so much heart and TRY. They can tend to overdo it because they want to please you so much. It is up to us to pull them back sometimes. I will be lost when I lose him. He is very much my best friend. He has been the smartest and funniest dog I have ever had and he has my heart. Cali is a beautiful dog and friend to you! We all love that girl!

From reading Shawn. I think you do the right thing. Pine tar will dry quicker than linseed (which will not be rot resistant until its hardened). Pine tar just is. It's antimicrobial too rather than working by formation of a polymeric surface layer like linseed.
That is so funny. You tell us the story about her hiding and then right on camera she goes and does it. That was really sweet. She is such a lovely dog.
Pine tar is smelling so good... I love it and use it as much as I can. All our old out houses have tared doors and there are old houses with tared roofs that are super fine and still very old. If you just tar them every year they will live almost forever. Pine tar have been used in ship building back in the days just to preserve the wood so the ship will last in the moist and rough environment.
It's when mixed with linseed oil a super effective preservative for wood that have been used for hundred of years in northern Europe.. Just look at the old churches in Norway for example they are fantastic buildings in timber that are tared to keep them safe and sound for hundreds of years..

Yes Shawn a few videos ago and after her heat stroke incident I noticed when you would throw her toy she wasn't as anxious to run and get it and now she's adapted to that in the hotter weather.shes like ok dad I no your expecting me to run out there fast and bring it back fast but I'm alittle wiser now so if you don't mind I will get it when I an good and ready to go get.yes dad I no where its at and it's not going anywhere ok unless one of those great big brown dogs gets it and if it does I will bite his heels and grab it quick and run .😅🤣😁.
I truly believe she's just learning not to waste her energy and relax a bit more in the shade.but your right she's practicing her hunting skills in wait to.
That was so cute and funny when she strolled over under the beam and just barely peaked over it to see if you were watching her or if you were throwing her toy. Cali is a very smart dog and she's proving it as she adjusts to the conditions around her.i think she's a happier dog in the cold winter months than in the hot dog days of summer.
She is quite the companion and you are both so good for. each other .

@@madmccaffrey8089 I put my arm up his cage (from my chair) so he can jump on it and he just runs up his ladder and looks at me. So I pull my arm back to me and he comes down his ladder, so I put my arm up for him to jump on and he runs back to his perch. We do this over and over ...he thinks it is fun, fun, fun. He is getting lots of exercise! My arm is wearing out. I tell him what a rascal he is.

I think so too. She's an intelligent dog. Maybe she had figured out that dad was busy all the time to play fetch so she find other interesting things to do while dad would come and toss her toy at his own time.
