Words do matter. When something you care about and love is continuously belittled or looked down upon, it’s exhausting. As an older ARMY, I’ve reached a place where I don’t let anyone steal my joy or diminish my love for the boys, but young fans who are growing up with families and friends who are unsupportive or just downright cruel in how they belittle their joy and enthusiasm, it’s a very different story. I’ve gone to BTS concerts with my daughters and have had young fans sitting near us tell me how much they wish their moms/parents would be more supportive because they would love to share the experience with them. At one of the Rosebowl concerts, a young teenage girl was there with her dad, who obviously brought her there out of obligation. For most of the concert he criticized almost everything and kept asking her how much longer they had to stay. I watch her excitement and beautiful smile that she first walked in with slowly fade to the point she was almost in tears, especially when he made them leave early. He took such a joyous moment away from her and that image has stayed with me. So words do matter.

It's not about caring about what others think, the interest of women/girls are not even taken seriously or seen as acceptable because women/girls enjoy them. This is also a big reason BTS is not taken seriously as artists because they have a majority female fanbase. Being belittled as a woman/girl (on a global level mind you) just for being excited meanwhile men tear apart cities over sports and nothing is said. So yeah, words do matter and the negative/passive-aggressive way ppl talk about women/girls interests is a major issue. Even when men are interested in things deemed "girly" there is still a higher level of acceptability for them because they are male. Your experience as a male ARMY is not the same as a female ARMY and i think you should remember that.

"Your experience as a male ARMY is not the same as a female ARMY and i think you should remember that." This I especially agree with.
The amount of times I've seen BTS dismissed and discounted by someone, until a male fan walks up, proudly ARMY, and then that someone suddenly says "oh really, are they good?" Honestly DT, it's not an attack on you, but you asked and we're trying to explain because you can't really know. When you walk down the street with your tattoos or BTS plastered over your clothes, people are much more likely to say "Oh really, are they actually good?" "Are they worth looking into?" Those same people would have looked with derision at the female ARMY they encountered before you.
The media who are on BTS's side also like to point out "oh, it's ok, it's not what you think; they also have male fans" as a way of legitimising BTS as worthwhile. They're trying to do something good, they don't realise what they're actually doing because, as I said before, it's so pervasive it's unconscious a lot of time.
I hope you're not feeling attacked. Honestly, I think it's fantastic that you asked the question, because a lot of people wouldn't have bothered. But it is something that needs to be openly discussed, I believe.

@@violetpheonix944 You hit the nail on the head. Even though being a male ARMY may not be the popular choice, it somehow makes the group "legitimized" by having male fans too. No disrespect to DT, but it's like apples and oranges when comparing male to female ARMY.

Words do matter. It’s easier to ignore if it’s stranger’s words, randoms on the internet. But it truly breaks your confident and heart when it comes from those closest to you; like your family, your brother, your teacher, your neighbor, your boyfriend… it can chip away your joy and excitement over time.

  • @arisol1011
    @arisol1011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Ya. Agreed. Words matter.
My brother in law is a big fan of Marvel. Big fan meaning he has a whole downstairs room dedicated to movie posters, comics and memorabilia. To my family that seems more acceptable than me having my merch and posters plastered on the walls for BTS.
I get sensitive when others use certain terms.

  • @violetpheonix944
    @violetpheonix944 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

I do care about those words. Words are powerful, they plant a seed, often an unconscious seed, in the mind. Think about it, if words held no power why care about the 'N' word? It's because they do have power. The power is subtle, but pervasive and invasive, and spans generations as long as they're in use.
"You throw like a girl." Think about what that statement tells the young boy who hears it.
I agree, I don't like labels either. But as a female I can tell you that all my life I've noticed that anything predominantly or traditionally enjoyed by females is discounted, its worth diminished. As though we're not rational, reasonable and intelligent enough to recognise what is worthy and what is not.
And what does that say about BTS? The media has been using us as a predominantly female fandom to discount and diminish BTS and their accomplishments the entire 9 years since debut. Every time someone says how "their fans get to stay up late tonight", what they're doing (apart from the obvious misogyny) is discounting Bangtan. Since if their fan's opinions are irrelevant, then it renders the band itself inconsequential.
I agree if we love ourselves we don't give a shit, and notice ARMYs do express their passion unreservedly, but they do it knowing there'll be odd looks and they'll be called crazy. Also a part of loving yourself is trying to improve the world--women should not have to be subjected to that kind of psychological abuse from girlhood, and our men should not be taught from boyhood that the opinion of a female is inconsequential. Imagine the world if we just changed that attitude--just by doing that we would drastically reduce violence and discrimination against women; and not just against women but all peoples, because then those unhelpful labels could disappear if we valued the opinion of all without bias or prejudice.
Anyway, sorry this go a bit long, but you did ask, lol! And I hope you actually, truly wanted to know. Thanks!

Others are giving great explanations as to why we don't like people belittling girls like that. I also did over on Patreon. I'd like to add that fighting against this idea that ARMYs are "crazy, obsessive and delusional" girls also means fighting for BTS. Being a fan of theirs is not irrational and stupid, they deserve all the love they get. That's what BTS also talks about when they say it's not easy being a fan and that's why they appreciate ARMYs even more. BTS is often downplayed by the media because of their largely female fanbase, so it really is an issue.
I hope you don't feel like you're getting bombarded with all these replies, but hey you asked 😅 We're explaining because it's clearly something you don't understand as a man.

Care is a strong word. I got a Nevermind tattooed to me to grow a 'no fucks given' attitude. But, I am human. Just like everyone else. And yes, I moderate my enthusiasm. I talk about BTS for hours with fellow ARMYs but I hide that part of me from non-ARMYs. Because I know what BTS means to me. I am living the life I am living because BTS inspired me. Hell, it is because of Yoongi, I am alive at all and yet, I stop myself from openly showing my eagerness, my enthusiasm, my giddiness towards BTS around people. Even, to my family. So, yes, words do matter.

I'm a 68 year old woman who never really "got into" artists growing up. Yes, I had artists I loved, bought their records, etc. But I never really thought about them as people, just entertainment. I didn't think of them other than as a sense of enjoyment. Then, on Sept. 13, 2015, I was scrolling You Tube and came across a video called Dope, that was being reacted to on a You Tube channel. Something about it caught my attention, and I looked up other videos of this group called BTS. I was amazed. They were different than anyone I had ever listened to. Then I started to watch "get to know them" videos, then interviews, then different series about them. I was slowly falling down that rabbit hole. My husband tolerates my obsession, but just doesn"t get the hype. My co workers constantly teased me, calling me a cougar, weird, etc. I wish that I had someone I could "fan girl" with, but alas, no such luck. Yes, it hurts sometimes when others make fun of me for loving these 7 amazingly talented young men, but I just tell myself that they're the ones who are missing out.

It’s more complex than that (not care what people say), DT. Growing up as a female comes with different challenges in different parts of the world. I can’t talk on behalf of all women, but from my experience, women and girls get a lot of teases and degrading remarks wether it’s direct or indirectly. We are bound to being seen as a weaker species, and our unique strengths are not considered as such. We don’t get equal respect, generally. And the list goes on. So it adds up. It may just be the choice of words, but because it adds up throughout your life, things like the ones in the video surely can affect the being of a female. We might not take it deep into hearts, but it surely affect us subconsciously.

Tbh, we care!! Bcoz when our enthusiasm is portrayed as CRAZY, WEIRD AND HYSTERIA, it just puts down all our love and respect for them just as attractions, infatuation, childish and immature without any rationality!! While on the other side, boys going violent, screaming on top of their lungs for their favorite characters in movie theaters, sports stars is considered as ENTHUSIASM, PASSION,LOYALTY! this matters bcoz it shows the difference in mindset while judging males and females for the exact same thing bcoz this stems out of thousands of years of misogyny and considering women's likes, dislikes, opinions as UNIMPORTANT !!

20:00 Of course words matter. They don‘t matter to me on a personal level, but they matter considering the fact how the world sees women and girls in general. Just think about sentences like “You throw like a girl“, “You look like a girl“, “This band has just female fans“, “The crazy fans“ (when talking about a band that has more female fans), “You scream like a hysteric woman“. I could go on forever. Do they sound positiv to you? What do that tells you about how women and girls are seen in the society? The problem is how women and girls are valued compared to men and boys: less strong, less rational, that there are tasteless and that masculinity is the standard for validation.
I was in a fandom of a soccer team and I am a fan of Star Wars. I‘m also an ARMY, so I like both what is considered as female and male interests in the society. I can tell you the similarities considering fandom behavior are huge, but the difference in how it is received and treated in society couldn’t be farther away. When the soccer team lost, the boys and men cried like babys and got drunk and “hysterical“ and many had their home full of merchandise. But I‘ve never witnessed such negative connotations for loving and supporting their teams. It was called “passion“ and “loyalty“. I was considered “cool“ for liking “male“ sports and for having manly hobbies. Have you ever heard someone saying to a guy that he is cool, when he liked female stuff? No, you are considered embarrassing and not to be taken serious.

  • @TaylorCanada8

Yes, I am absolutely offended by the way people describe female BTS fans in such a stereotypical way (usually described as crazy, immature, toxic). I am a 63 year old ARMY and I constantly face ridicule about my love for BTS. People who don't understand anything about BTS have this warped view of how BTS could possibly have such a dedicated fandom, as if we have all lost our minds because of the looks of these men (usually described as "boys" by non-ARMY) or something. I can see their attractiveness (I'm not blind) but I resent the implication that that is what my love for them is about. I don't want to be affected by the words of others, but I am. It's exhausting being constantly misunderstood. Listening to continuous belittling of something you love (and knowing how hard these men have worked for their success) gets to me. It will never change my love or respect for BTS, but it bothers me a lot.

@D T Parker and any other fellow ARMYs, I do care about what society looks at us women who are enthusiastic about our love for BTS or for some other popular artist. The reason that I am concerned is because what do we tell our young daughters when someone calls them crazy or weird or obsessive? when girls love something and are passionate about there is a double standard that men and boys can love football or other sports paint their face wear all different colors for their specific sports star! But if a girl wants to wear a BTS shirt or the BT 21 headband we’re called obsessive crazy fans! There is a double standard and to me it’s gotta stop !!it just shows that the equality of both men and women, girls and boys are still looked differently when it comes to their passion and liking something! I believe what she said in the rise of Bangtan chapter 21 was 100% spot on! How do you change society ‘s ways of hundred years of any inequality and prejudice you tell somebody?! You speak up! that it’s wrong you tell them that is not what is appropriate to describe a female fan of BTS or any other artist that a Young woman or girl has a passion to follow! You say to them it’s not acceptable that you’re calling me crazy, or calling me weird or calling me obsessive! Then change can start once enough people start saying no I don’t like it ! Then it can be taken seriously because there is strength in numbers and their strength in voices! This may be my opinion it might not be your opinion or it may not be the way you feel! And DT Parker has two young daughters and I’m sure he wants in this society that we live in now to treat Them equally and respectfully for the passions in things they choose to like! The more people speak up and say that it’s not right then change can start! An older Female BTS Army Fan!💜 BoraHae 💜

@Lauren Aurora, thank you for reading my lengthy comment but I just had to speak on it! DT is a good reactor on TH-cam and he is a fellow ARMY, but as a man he will never understand the shame and belittle behavior that Young women and girl fans of BTS and other artist, how passionate we feel and how we are treated in society! It has continued to be a double standard in fandom genders! I myself was ridiculed for loving the Beatles back in the day, I was called , crazy and obsessive Beatles’ fan! One thing I’d like to say to all TH-cam reactors you do have a responsibility to choose your words and to react in a way that it’s not offensive! I’m not saying DT was offensive but he is kind of clueless on how young women and girls are portrayed as passionate fans! Even though he said “oh I can ignore it doesn’t bother me I don’t care”! Because he’s a man it’s a different side of the fan coin ! Hope one day all of us can be considered equal for our enthusiasm and our passion for being fans not only of BTS but other things that we have in our life! 💜 BoraHae 💜

I have always done whatever I wanted and at 52 that is not going to change. I don't really care what people say about me, but the disrespect that army is shown just because the fandom is predominately female is not acceptable. Even now when the majority of the media should know how diverse and inclusive our fandom is we still encounter that toxic attitude of being crazy. Army will always push back when we come across that kind of disrespect. Personally I've walked away from friendships because I was being ridiculed for loving BTS. That's fine I need BTS more than I needed those so called friendship. How can you say you love someone or appreciate someone when you talk negatively about something that they love and is important to them. Words matter everytime.

    Words absolutely matter.
Female enthusiasm is very often belittled from when we are children and that impacts how a lot of girls and women feel about themselves and their interests. We are often asked to behave 'properly', to 'tone it down' / 'calm down' and generally get ridiculed for being excited about something, especially if it’s something that’s considered a so-called “female” oriented interest. And don't even get me started on the ageism that female fans face.
As others have pointed out, you as a male fan - probably even more so as an ADULT MALE fan - will still have the privilege of being taken more seriously than a lot of female fans, by both men and women. All you have to do is look at who most of the big BTS reactors are here on yt. They are predominantly adult males. Why do you think that is?
A big part of is that male reactors' opinions and views of what BTS (or anything for that matter) is to a large extent considered more valuable and interesting than that of a female fan. Male reactors bring in male viewers, who might never have given BTS a shot if they hadn't seen that guys were reacting to them. Other men might look at you and think ‘oh if he’s a fan then they might be alright’ - you will rarely see that happen with female fans.
You will probably also get a pass for your tats. It would not surprise me one bit if guys look at your tattoos and see the artistry of the work or the dedication, while a female fan would quite possibly be labeled as ‘obsessive’ if she had those same tattoos.
    So yes, words matter.

Words do matter, when you see how women and girls are not taken seriously for their passions yet men and boys are seen as perfectly normal to display their passion over sports etc. its just not fair and it brings down women and girls. I always think about how when teens liked Justin Bieber or One Direction they were constantly getting made fun of especially by men and boys and it makes those girls afraid to say they are fans because they think they will get made fun of or put down for their interests. We should all try to not put others down for what they enjoy regardless of gender or age, they are not hurting anyone so lets just give words of encouragement. ☺️

I've watched your videos. Especially rise of bangtan. I don't know if you pay attention to the subtitles sometimes because you are distracted by the visuals.
In rise of bangtan the subtitles to the song lyrics and the songs that are used throughout the video shows what exactly the massage that we are supposed to see and understand, The topic of the chapters and the feelings the members talk about at that certain moment is shown with the specific song that's been used.
Also the lyrics and all translations are really accurate and well done for us.
Unlike those lyrics videos in TH-cam you'll be able to understand the songs well and the emotions well.
I hope you pay attention to the subtitles. It's part of the experience. I really love this series. It's well made and talk about everything.
If you watch the old episodes you'll see some compare and contrast going on too. People misunderstand some of it mainly because they are not paying attention and don't think much about it.
I don't know what you think because you didn't talk about it.
Anyway if you watch old videos you'll definitely find many things you've missed.
I said this because I've seen many people react to this series and also overall all the BTS content but they don't do much research or look deep into things. Especially lyrics. So they are missing a lot. Trust me that happened to me. But I'm glad i do research now.
Well for a little example read mic drop lyrics on doolset website. ( I don't know if you've already done it because i haven't seen your patreon content ) When you look at lyrics in TH-cam it doesn't look like that much. But you'll find more explanation of things and everything will make sense if you look into it.
Also how meaningful their choreography is according to the lyrics. There are so many things you haven't understand or noticed I'm sure.
I'll give and example. ( I'm writing all this for you and other ARMY because you guys will find more meaning to everything BTS has created. You'll see things in a different light)
    So example.
Like how they do bird poses in baepsae if you have noticed. Throughout the choreo one member do it while the others point at it. They are trying to get the message across and it goes with what they talk about.
Also in mic drop in Jhope's part how 4 of them do eating gestures when Jhope rap about following,
    I fly off the handle
    잘 못 익은 것들 스테끼 여러 개
    Several undercooked steaks ,
    거듭해서 씹어줄게 스타의 저녁에
I’ll chew them repeatedly at the star’s dinner
Well this part has a long explanation you have to see. To put it simply, it says this,
, “chewing undercooked steaks repeatedly” can be interpreted as “dissing immature and arrogant jerks (who do not “approve” BTS) multiple times”.
These little details everyone miss. But you've been an ARMY for some time now so if you haven't caught these stuff i think you'll be interested to see what else you can see.
I know these are little things. But they are meaningful and will answer many questions if you look at them deeply. Not only choreography of course. But everything. Above are just 2 little examples. Just analyse one choreography and what it mean. You'll see new stuff. Korean ARMY are lucky. They understand everything we won't even know. :)
Everything they do they put so much meaning to it. I appreciate it from them as artists. So it's bummer if we missed those things.
This was long but i wanted be help ARMY who haven't seen or understood these things. You're a big ARMY DT so so i think you would be interested especially. Hope you get to know about BTS more from it.

as a man it can be hard for you to understand how badly women are treated in society, and how we fight for things, which for men may be such insignificant things, but for us are big issues.

Hmm... it's not about the word choice but the intention behind the choice. Be it crazy, hysterics, etc, if it's said with the intention to demean, that's when it does something to me... And unfortunately more often than not, that's the case...

hello my friend, maybe it's hard for a man to understand the various restrictions of behavior and thinking that we women are subjected to for being or wanting to be who we really are, and it's tiring and frustrating to see our emotions and tastes being put as something depressing and worthless and constantly we have to defend ourselves for liking something, an example that happened today, a friend called me a fanatic for wanting to get a tattoo of BTS because they changed my life, this friend has a tattoo of a famous football player on his arm, that makes me made me cry for hours.

Hi,D.T ! You know, I'm 65 going on 66 and I've met BTS in 2016. I have two wonderful adult boys who are living in another city. When they went to college and found jobs there I found myself in an empty house and ,at that moment, I happened to meet south-korean culture and ,due to them, I met Taehyung due to Hwarang. I have almost 12 years of acknowledging South Korea and almost 6 years of being a BTS fan. When my work collegues found my passion in learning about them ,,asked me "why? What's the use?"I live in East Europe btw🤗 And I also asked them "why not?" I want to learn about a part of the world I learned only a little in Geography and history books! I want to know more!
MEETING BTS , in the begining, I was afraid that young fans wouldn't talked to me because of age gap, but as the time passed , even I'm not a registered army, just an honest fan, those youngsters made me feel more comfortable among them and enjoy BTS music, messages, artistic creativity, so on.
And I underline that I only been an Elvis fan when I was 11.😁
ONE LAST THING: BTS MEANS A WAY OF LIVING When my boys bought me ticket to watch Burn the stage I've met sooo many kind, attentive, polite people, young and old at the same time, educate people! We are trying to meet again this year ,after pandemic! It's enough. I wish you All all the best! #mybestwishes 🙆‍♀️✌& #borahaeyo💚⚜💜

Imagine you are an African-amarican. Even you don't mind people call you with N word or whatever, N word should be regarded as a discrimination word.
It's good if you don't mind what people are saying about you. However it's not the matter of "I'm ok about it" or "not". It's not the matter of personal mindset. Wrong is Wrong even you personally have no problem with it. The word should be used in the politically correct way.
Instead of saying that "Just don't mind what the word is used to describe you.", You can say that "I personally don't mind how they describe me, but the society had better stop using those "Crazy" words to describe women." 😊

i'm 52 an older ARMY. Been with BTS since their debut and i'm proud to be in the fandom. People ask why i'm into k-pop at such old age..I told them i maybe old but i'm young at heart. Do i look like i care about people saying what i can and cannot do just because of my age. Now when my children especially my little girl talked about k-pop with her cousins they included me in their conversations because they know i love k-pop and we can relate with each other, while their parents sit at the back watching us clueless ..you don't have to be young to enjoy music, live life to the fullest and love yourself ..that's all that matters..ARMY Borahae!!!

I think it's important for people who are influenced by words and what people think of them to have less of this name-calling crap to deal with. For some people being called crazy or hysterical would make them feel like they should dim their light and quiet themselves in order to avoid that judgement and honestly that makes me sick. It is important we hold people and the media accountable for using these hurtful terms because I would hate for girls/women to feel like they have to hide themselves when we need the opposite in the world we are living in today. In the world we live in today, the institutions and systems are still built on a patriarchy which means women are disadvantaged. We truly do not need more worldwide media coverage creating a narrative that women are not capable bc subconsciously that thinking affects women's opportunities in their careers and communities. If we help stop discrimination against women, it helps everyone, including men.

Of course as a human you will feel something if people continuously dismiss you as a stereotype and label you just because. You don't feel it because you are a man and an adult with experience and self assurance.. It does matter to many who are not as secure or as matured as you are. It's easy to tell people not to care but we should care when people are hurting and hurting themselves because of labels and discrimination. Loving yourself doesn't come easily to many and a helping hand is important. Why don't you initiate something amongst your viewers and fans something to help the gun control movement within your community. That would mean a lot.

When we found out the true meaning of Love yourself, you will completely feel truly 'Content', if you feel content, you're satisfied and happy. Feeling content :
    1. you are in healthy routine
    2. You're committed to achieving
    3. Your mood doesn't change much, most become calm and patient
    4. Your needs are small, knowing what the most that you need
    5. You're living in the Now, love life to the fullest. Embrace the past, walk in the present and let it flow the future.
    6. You're wake up feeling positive most in the morning
    7. You socialized with happy and positive people
    8. You're realistic
    9. You're true to yourself
    10. You believe in your talents and skills with confidence.
    11. Understand the real meaning of life and love. Embrace them.
    12. You feel loved by Universe. Then you feel at peace with yourself. Peace within (clear your mind, open your heart, embrace your soul and heal your life)
I found myself by Love Myself since I was 25 yo, I feel content since then till now in age 51. I enjoy my life journey and at peace. BTS messages through their music attracts me bc it resonated with me. 💜💜

As for the *crazy* label I don't appreciate the way that it is said or in what context it is often used as. In fact in a way some are saying that BTS only has worth to screaming 15 year old girls, which is not the case but then again there is nothing wrong with being a 15 year old screaming their hearts out, people don't judge when guys are getting all emotional over football games/rugby/baseball. I don't like the way that it is used as a put down and trying to make it BTS and what they stand for less important because there fan base has 15 year old girls in it.

it's not a matter of caring about what people think of you, it's misogyny. women showing their emotions was literally taken as a disease through history... you have a daughter, right? you should really get educated on women's issues, cause no matter how strong her mentality is, growing up in a sexist world will be challenging; there will be people who will dismiss her, her capacity, her intelligence, her skills, her tastes and enthusiasm about something. i literally listen all the time what i should do with my life, my body, my money and myself, because I can't control me and my emotions, I'm a women... she, me and every other girl have to face this. been surrounded by people who supports us, who can try their best to understand us and help us to change this scenario is much more needed than just having a strong mentality and don't care about it.

You had to ask? Yes we do care. Us fans who have faith ✝ care even more because we know words are powerful (there is power in the tongue). Constantly calling a person(s) crazy or insane is like manifesting it. If people are affected by words enough to take their own lives or kill others, then what makes you think how media portrays women would not affect us long term. Words matter which is why RM always corrected interviewers. This is also why I tell ARMY to stop praising fanboys just for being males that are fans of BTS. Women are the foundation of every fanbase because we support groups before it is considered "Cool" to do so. They should be proud of themselves if anything.

Thousands of screaming fans wait for the doors to open, decked out in colorful clothes, with paint all over their faces jumping up and down waiting to see their idols perform in person.
How did you picture those fans? Did you imagine them as so-called fangirls or sports fans? Would the attitude you held toward the group referred to earlier change depending on which one?
Most likely, yes. If the idea in your mind was a fangirl, you might have rolled your eyes thinking of a group of teenage girls screaming at the top of their lungs for a boy band. If the idea in your mind was a sports fan, you might have pictured something completely different, maybe respectable men with a passion for American football.
While in essence, both groups of people are the same, our society perceives fangirls as embarrassing and “much” less respectable than sports fans.
The basis of this difference in perception doesn’t lie in anything but sexism. Because we associate these fans of musicians or bands with femininity, they are then associated with being less-than or embarrassing. On the other hand, being a sports fan is associated with masculinity and is considered acceptable.
A common argument is that fangirls waste their money, making them less respectable than sports fans. However, if it comes down to “wasting” money, it’s a pretty equal comparison looking at football fans and K-pop fans, both arguably the most intense of each category.
Another common argument made against fangirls is that their “obsession” is unhealthy or crazy, but the same level of “obsession,” if not more, is seen in sports fans. For example, after the 2018 Super Bowl, fans of both the Eagles and the Patriots rioted in the streets in happiness and anger. The narrative is spun around a double standard lacking any sound reasoning.
There is no question that this difference in respectability toward each interest is guided by inherent sexism. The purpose of highlighting this difference isn’t to push toward treating sports fans with the same lack of respect but rather to treat all types of fans with equal respect. Let people enjoy things without feeling shame or embarrassment🙄

For years, I maintained a safe distance from Bieber, One Direction and 5SOS until it was deemed reasonable to like their music openly. In retrospect, I’ve realized how ignorant I was-In actively avoiding such artists and fans, I was effectively telling my peers that their views weren’t valid. Our culture tells us time and time again that there is something wrong with having a predominantly tween/teen girl fanbase in pop music. It questions the legitimacy of artists and doesn’t recognize their competency unless they cater to a more “sophisticated” or “cultured” audience (i.e adults and men)😒- Language such as “fangirl” and “groupies” are heavy with negative connotations that demean the safe space that fandoms can provide. There’s a form of internalized misogyny that manifests itself as guilt or shame in young women and discounts our opinions as unreliable and easily swayed😒😒
It follows that BTS is often criticized for its enormous, predominantly female fan base, and despite their record-breaking success with the new single “Dynamite,” they are viewed as unworthy of being an international standard. For instance, one of my high school friends recently informed me that BTS’s claim to fame can only be attributed to the members’ attractive features that girls “go crazy for.” Out of all the xenophobic, homophobic and sexist rhetoric the group has been subjected to, this comment was the one I took most personal offense to. If sexual appeal and attractiveness were the only things that mattered, I’d argue that there would be many groups more popular than BTS, especially considering that the members don’t fit Western male beauty standards. What makes BTS so beloved is that they create music that touches people regardless of racial, cultural or language barriers.....It should go without saying that if you feel the need to criticize such artists, do so on the basis of their art, not on how they rose to fame, who their fandom consists of or at the expense of women. Somewhere on the road to the present, society decided that women were vapid, fickle and heavily influenced by a pretty face and good haircut. In the context of pop culture (and arguably life), the consensus is that girls like me are unable to think critically and form informed decisions on what we like or dislike. It’s almost instinctual to question the credibility of our preferences. This is accompanied by the defeated understanding that things I like or enjoy become free real estate for people to find fault in. Whether you,as a man, notice or not, most of us subscribe to this ideology, and it impacts the attitude we have toward life. Young female fans are undeniably MAJOR drivers for revenue in the music industry and are key to raising sales and awareness for artists. It seems unfair that the same demographic that led to the rise of the Beatles, Beyoncé, The 1975, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles are not given the credit they deserve. If we continue to equate female excitement with hysteria, passion with infatuation and appreciation with tastelessness, we risk creating generations of women with a lack of confidence in themselves and their decisions...
I hope you'll take the time to read all of the comments from these amazing women that shared their opinion on this topic...
