Love it! I have an SL600 from those years and the first thing I need to do is cut the muffler out. Wish I had an AMG-style exhaust to throw on it because it's way too quiet for me.
I remember when I was a kid in the late 80s early 90s, staying at my grandma house and my next door neighbor's friends across the street had three black W124 Mercedes-Benz AMG models. One was the Hammer AMG coupe, a sedan, and the estate wagon version. I freaked out when I always see those cars. I had an awesome childhood oh, those were the days.
Its nice to see Chris not going on about spec after spec etc, but just enjoying himself. There are many facets to motor journalism, but what Chris seems to bring across through all of it is the enjoyment of driving... and that's why its so good to watch his videos. I enjoy Chris's videos for the vicarious pleasure it brings.
I am BMW fan,my first car was a BMW E30 325,now I drive E39 528,but huge respect for W124. There are 3 or 4 cars from Mercedes line who i will love to own,and they are SL 500 from 90's,W124,W126 SEC coupe,G class from 200,E190 2.5 liter from 90's :)

Got a S124 E class from 87 myself. Sleek, classic and indestructible. 3 litre diesel with 580 000 km on the odometre and still runs like a beaute. Love 123, 124 chassis mercs!

If I had just a bit more disposable income to be able to buy my ideal car, I'd go directly to AMG and have them build me an SLS gullwing car, with all the Black Series bits: The extra power, the lighter back-bone, the lighter titanium exhaust, suspension, etc. but without any of the aero bits, so the car retains the subtle gorgeous lines of a standard SLS AMG, which is almost a perfect modern-day interpretation of the Merc 300SL gullwing cars of the 1950s. So basically all the go-faster bits, but without the Black Series aero that makes the car a bit too much boy-racer-ish. Especially that mini GT3 fixed wing on the back. So again, the majority of the performance Black Series bits (i.e. sans the aero bits, but with all the other upgrades) and the clean shape of a standard SLS AMG. And definitely a silver exterior, with a red interior. So when my finances finally allow it, that is the exact car I'm going to order. Get ready for my build sheet AMG!
mornadu Yeah, but I can find a nice pre-owned one in the colors I want, low miles, and they said they can do the treatment on an existing SLS, so I'm good there if I decide that's the treat I want to get. Still up in the air about it, but I'll decide soon. It's sad too, because I just don't like the new GT. It looks like a chubby, oddly proportioned Mercedes version of an F-Type. Just my opinion. I'm sure it's a great drive, but it's no SLS.
Sandra Rios FYI, they stopped making SLS cause the sales pretty much sucked. In terms of looks it sucked too. It may resemble a great car, but it's not beautiful, it's just well made.

Mortalomena Straight six is a beautiful configuration. I find it disappointing that more and more things become computer simulated. It's like pushing adult entertainment in favor of real woman. Sure, for some it make sense. But if one has a choice, it seems rather silly to go for emulation.

+Davidovar34 have you seen a w124 e class? They're tiny compared to the modern c class. This car is very small and has a ton of power. It doesn't really matter though. Most remaining examples of the Hammer have died or put away in someones collection. I wish I could buy one.

Not to mention if you want a fast car it's not an SEC, you take a 560 SEC, take the M119 out of that and throw it into a 107C chassis essentially creating a 560 SLC. That my friends is a fast car.

What he says about the throttle is so true, the gearbox aswell....I wish I had a V8 in my w124 coupé..but the solid feel and the ride make up for alot, I can live with 136 HP
I have to agree with you on the throttle pedal there, Chris. I've driven loads of W124s and W201s and you have to literally push the throttle like half-way to the floor before you get any response. Besides that, I love the Hammer, and lesser models as well.
I have always loved my w124.. now all I want to do is collect AMGs when Im rich.. Would love to see more of the engines & old amgs put through a chris harris test!
Such a good looking thing. Boxy, but not too boxy. Fat, but not too fat. Simple, but not too simple. It hits all the marks as far as I'm concerned. Wish I could find one state side that was in decent nick. The only one I've ever seen was in Philly and needed a TON of work.
This guy can drive , not easy to take such unique car into a corner while drifting it in wet conditions and with such confidence , respect !

the 500E was a special breed as well. I am one of the few lucky American owners of a C43 AMG. AMG really knows how to make an exhaust note sound sexy.

What he says about the throttle is so true, the gearbox aswell....I wish I had a V8 in my w124 coupé..but the solid feel and the ride make up for alot, I can live with 136 HP
I have to agree with you on the throttle pedal there, Chris. I've driven loads of W124s and W201s and you have to literally push the throttle like half-way to the floor before you get any response. Besides that, I love the Hammer, and lesser models as well.
I have always loved my w124.. now all I want to do is collect AMGs when Im rich.. Would love to see more of the engines & old amgs put through a chris harris test!

Such a good looking thing. Boxy, but not too boxy. Fat, but not too fat. Simple, but not too simple. It hits all the marks as far as I'm concerned. Wish I could find one state side that was in decent nick. The only one I've ever seen was in Philly and needed a TON of work.
