If you were to ask a Baby Boomer about the work ethic of Millennials and Gen Xers, you might get an earful. In this video, I point out workplace generational differences and explain why today’s younger generations are sometimes regarded as slackers.
We think of Baby Boomers as having a strong work ethic. Boomers see the intrinsic value in hard work. They’re perfectly happy to stay at the office past closing time. And they’re loyal - they devote years or even decades to the same employers.
I can attest to the workplace generational differences between my generation (Gen X) and Boomers. While Gen Xers are serious about performing well, we’re generally not in love with our jobs. We want to do our work and then go spend our free time on what we really enjoy.
Are we slackers? Is the work ethic of Millennials and Generation X lacking or non-existent - or does it simply look different? I would argue that although the generations approach their work in dissimilar ways, they’re similarly committed to outcomes.
We need a broader understanding of what “good work ethic” means. It’s more than a willingness to take on back-breaking labor. It’s not just about putting in long hours. You don’t necessarily need to toe the company line.
Consider this: Our young people are great with time management and are up to speed on the latest technologies. They can execute complicated tasks at record speeds. The work ethic of Millennials and Gen Xers is alive and well - it’s just unfamiliar.
Because we’re naturally biased toward our own generation, we have to actively decide to accept workplace generational differences. To work well together, we should recognize the positive, unique contributions of all generations in the workforce.

Don't pay me 145 bucks an hour and ask me to sweep the floor and wipe shit down, after I finish the job in record time.
I am Gen X and Gen Y and Z can do it, if they have not already left yet.

    Nobody has work ethic.
