  • A man breaks up with his girlfriend.
    HIP HIP HOORAY is used with permission from Lizzy Sanford. Learn more at lizzy.website.
    Harry and Anna have been living together for two years, after dating for four. But on his 30th birthday, he breaks up with her. But breaking up is hard to do, especially when Anna's planned surprise party continues to bubble onward, throwing a wrench into the process.
    Writer-director Lizzy Sanford's small gem of a comedy is equal parts painful and hilarious. Essentially the chronicle of a breakup, the story seems deceptively simple. But it's built on a smart, sharp, funny and honest screenplay, which sets up a mine field of long buried frustration, awkward humor and genuine pain for the two characters to cross before they can finally part.
    Relationship films rely on strong performances to create believability and engagement, and this short doesn't skimp. Actor Anna Cordell is the film's center, and she navigates the thin line between agony and humor with great skill, able to stay in the emotional reality of the film's circumstances while still giving life to the funnier moments. Matt Ingerbreston's Harry plays well off her, and viewers get a strong sense of someone finally giving voice to things they've pushed down for some time. Both actors are captured in luminous black and white, which gives the film a sense of timeless classicism, underscoring the universality of the experience of a relationship falling apart.
    Thanks to great writing, beautiful cinematography and two strong performances, viewers can see both why Harry and Anna were drawn together as a couple, and why they fell apart. HIP HIP HOORAY ultimately proves to be equal parts awkward, charming and almost painfully heartfelt, showing that breakups, like relationships, also are about good timing.

There's no good time to break up. If it were on her birthday, there'd be a point.

      It’s how analyzing works. An artist presents a story and if not everything is pointed out, people try to fill in the gaps.
      Sure, sometimes there is just one possible interpretation but with this piece, there isn’t.
      It just so happens that I found that I don’t respect people who say „I am turning thirty and I have to start to think about what’s good for me“ as a reason to why they break up.

      If you are naive or desperate enough to believe that, good for you. Sadly, the world has proven many times over that it's a cold, hard place with a lot of beauty but certainly no gods of any kind.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Stephanie Fair warning: I don't mess around when it comes to the truth so I recommend you turn around and go back to your life and never question your faith if it is actually even somewhat important to you.
      Now to the problem at hand:
      If your god exists, he is either occasionally cruel beyond imagination for if he really made the world, he made the evil in it - or he simply doesn't care ( anymore ) which would make him extremely cold-hearted ( I exclude being weak because if some unnamable entity creates the whole universe, it should have a pretty good level of power to begin with ).
      Man does not choose to be evil because of some "devil", some mythical demon leads the lost souls away from their path to heaven. Man chooses evil because evil is a part of man from the very beginning of their determined path. Free will sounds like this grande, mythical thing until you start to actually think about it.
      Who made the universe? According to you, is it God? Then we all follow his path. Then every action is a consequence of something we can never truly control. A madman who takes a knifes and kills his family is sick because of an illness inside of his mind. Has he chosen to become a monster? Then how mighty do you think you are, following a religion that was invented by _man_ a few short centuries ago, that you can tell me that evil comes from the devil and not just unfortunate circumstances?
      Can you truly make an *UNINFLUENCED* decision to be something you are not? Freedom is the freedom to follow *YOUR OWN* will alone.
      But you are never free to choose something which you don't want to do. You can't even choose which colours appeal to you or what food you enjoy the most.
      Yet here you are, claiming that evil is free to choose to be good and that good is free to choose to be evil. In reality, people don't"choose" anything at random, they "question" their mind and then follow whatever logical consequence they come up with. As a _reaction_ .
      The old Greeks knew of tales about a "hell", as a realm of punishment and as well as a different kind of afterlife for those who lived honest and good lives and even about an apple that brought much evil to man.
      In Norse mythology, a final day of battle brought the end of the old world.
      And bands of travelling nomads knew tales about strange miracles by the dozen, centuries before a Christian god "came to earth". Did you know that the Catholic popes made themselves unchallengeable less than 200 years ago by _introducing_ the papal infallibility? How come that religion is so distinctively... _Human_ ?
      I hate to be the one to break it to you but we are all usually fairly scared of death and guess what - we all want to have hope. We always have been and most of us always will be.
      Oh, I *hope* that there is SOMETHING after we close our eyes for the last time. But your "god" was invented by man. You are following a thinly wrapped set of rules established only 2 millennia ago. I guess "god" was just kind of busy during the stone age and whole struggle of the Jewish people-
      It would be naive to blame God for evil? The god who apparently stood by while *MILLIONS* were systematical *SLAUGHTERED* less than a hundred years ago? Where was he when they prayed? Oh I know - he was being _mysterious_ , as usually. Or for the Americans out there, on a smaller yet more familiar scale, on 9/11 in 2001, the people who died in the towers aso. - what about them?
      God is busy at the moment, he can't come to the phone right now, I hope you suffer a pleasant demise - that's your deity. Your "saviour".
      Oh, and what about Corona? You know, this "slightly" out of control pandemic?
      Who made the virus? It certainly wasn't *man* . Unless you count a questionable diet as being a sinner.
      Religion is a soothing drug for those who need it. A beautiful lie that you should never question. How naive of me to ask myself how man can do evil when man is made in gods image.
      This world is beautiful enough without tales for people who are not willing to come to terms with reality. But I understand that it is nice to be able to have _faith_ in something other than cold, uncaring rationale and logic. You don't even know how much.
      I am even inclined to believe that there was some kind of thing once ago or maybe even now because nothing can come from nothing. At one point, there must have been _something_ we don't understand yet. But there is no evidence for the claim that any human on earth has ever truly witnessed anything otherworldly. Or gone to hell. Or to heaven. Wherever those places are supposed to be.
      You just _choose_ to believe that there is something. Good for you.
      Do you know when I slowly stopped to believe in the Christian God ( or any other human deity for that matter )? When I started to learn about what man is capable of. I am German. What happened in 1939 to 1945 is all the proof you need. They didn't need a devil to become monsters. The monsters were already there. As they had been since the dawn of man.
      Don't you remember that Kain slew Abel?
      Their parents, Adam and Eve...
      Who made the _snake_ ?

      @@Arcaryon Occassionally cruel.. more like 24/7. The entire concept of life and death is cruelty. Or would be if it was intentional. I prefer to think life on Earth started as a string of random events which then progressed into where we are now. Just a coincidence. The Earth sure looks good with all the plants, animals and stuff. It makes us the "cool guys" among other nearby planets 😎

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gloryshadow8710 I don't think life and death is naturally "cruel".
      After all, that we as humans have "randomly" developed feelings, abilities and civilizations that make existence better than death aka non-existence( well at least random as in "not following the plans of a human being" ) so naturally, thinking that the world is cruel is kind of our own problem - while we asked nobody to exist, nothing asked us to exist either.
      As a follower of determinism, I am certainly agreeing with most of your statements regardless :P
      Still all that stuff aside, I love being alive - it's just a lot of fun. And I think there is some objective truth to this opinion - we are remarkably primitive in our basic desires and that basically enables us to be happy DESPITE the occasional famine, poverty, disease aso. or even the very real possibility of forever seizing to exist after our brief time on this planet.

    • @gloryshadow8710
      @gloryshadow8710 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Arcaryon Well, I mean the circumstances of death in nature are usually cruel, wild animals hardly ever die of old age like us. I see humans as only one of the species, some of us have the luxury of dying painlessly in a comfy bed but thats not what happens everyday in the wilderness with millions of animals fighting for survival. The whole idea that some must die so that others can live is extremely cruel in my opinion. I mean.. 99,9% of living creatures fight this every single day, they dont have the same advantage like us. And to imagine that so many people blindly worship the possible "inventor" of this system is beyond my understanding. For me it is easier to accept the idea of randomness which then evolved into a living complex organism - the biosphere - with some purpose to keep balance and coexistence - carnivores vs herbivores, plants vs animals. I try to focus on the good, the beauty of nature on our planet, and accept the bad as necessary but I refuse to accept that a sapient being intentionally created it.
