      @@EarthrealmWarrior the individual trees/stems die all the time for tons of reason (old age, illness, etc) -- forest service collects deadfall and fells sick/dead trees, piles them up in "slash piles" and burns them in the winter.

    Wait, some trees naturally shed their limbs?!? That is a really interesting strategy. Why would they do that?

    • @Izumayaki01
      @Izumayaki01 ปีที่แล้ว +501

      When trees grow taller and new branches form, the branches below get less and less sunlight. It's better for the tree to shed the limbs and not waste energy and food than to keep them healthy for diminishing returns.

    • @Justinthetrees
      @Justinthetrees  ปีที่แล้ว +1196

      Lots of trees do it for lots of reasons! Aspens shed their lower limbs as the tree grows taller because those limbs would then be primarily shaded and thus consuming more energy than they’re producing. So they drop them in favor of the new higher limbs that reach sunlight!

    Pando lost its designation as the largest creature on earth. It now belongs to a massive underground fungus in W̶a̶s̶h̶i̶n̶g̶t̶o̶n̶ S̶t̶a̶t̶e̶ Oregon. The fungus also eats trees.

    • @Justinthetrees
      @Justinthetrees  ปีที่แล้ว +270

      Hence why I said "heaviest" -- although the "largest" moniker is still very much up for debate. A lot of people still think Pando counts as more of a "single organism" than that fungal network. Let the botanists fight, i say!

    • @0v_x0
      @0v_x0 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Eats decomposing trees, mycelial networks help spread nutrients and chemical signals amongst plant root network. Afaik the mycelium in the PNW is the largest by landmass, in square miles.

    • @ech9817
      @ech9817 ปีที่แล้ว

      @a. phytophile Actually, the honey mushroom is a parasitic fungus! They eat the living parts of the tree until it dies. And once it dies, it can continue eating the body of the dead tree for years! Amazing how such a prolific parasite can live in balance with an entire forest ecosystem without overrunning it

Something on the lines of if you "genetically" tested them, the ones hundreds of miles away, would have similar genes, because of how they grow from the roots. I don't know how factual that information is. This was almost 23 years ago.
