U can control the compression speeds on the upper end builds that have the 3 position compression adjustment. The one band plush feeling is very nice for wet, gnarly situations. One could run two bands for very much flow, bike park potentially even 3 depending ont he rider but this puts the shock feeling like every other shock out there. Great review~!!!

I owned 2014 Stumpjumper Evo. I loved that bike. It's fatal flaw was the PF BB that creaked though. Bike ripped, on 26" wheels and only 27-28# too! I miss those lighter bikes at that travel. Shocktune was on point. Amazing how they are still chasing the perfect tune 10 years later. Had 2018 Enduro Pro, it was pretty good, shock tune was OK but not great ( 1 st gen Ohlins air..). I've owned ridden a few Demos and enjoyed them. Currently on a Kenevo SL which is also very good so far.
The Epic 8 Evo has grown into the old short travel trail bike range at a much lower weight ~27 lbs (Evo 8 Comp) vs 36 lbs (15 Alloy). This bike has to perform like a "big" bike to justify that package weight. I am glad it exisits, but I can't imagine I would like using this for all day epic trail rides or big climbing days.
The expert model has a three-position compression adjustment on the Genie and the Performance Elite, GRIP X2 front and weighs around 31 to 32 lbs. That can make a significant difference compared to the alloy model. 😊
I don't like the climb switch on my carbon Stumpy 15. It's too firm. I like a climb switch to firm up the suspension without locking it out and I feel like this one locks out to the point that it's only useful on smooth ground otherwise you just get bounced around off every rock and root. I love everything else about the bike though. It's such a ripper. It feels so nimble through the corners, perhaps at a slight compromise to overall stability. I am on an S5 though and 6'4" (194cm) so I probably could have sized up to the S6 but I wanted a bike that was nimble and also when I used the calculator on the Specialized website, it said S5 so I went with my gut and got the S5. The shock feels insanely plush in the early/mid stroke and makes the front feel less plush in comparison even though it is still an incredible fork with the new Grip X2 damper. I do find that when I am going up steep climbs, the bike tends to kind of sit deep into the shock travel due to weight transfer but I am going to put 2 more spacers into the shock before my next ride (going from 1 to 3) to see how much different it feels and then I will dial it back to 2 spacers which I suspect will be the happy medium between plush and controlled. I love this bike man, it's so good. Makes me smile every time I ride it. My other bike is a Mondraker Crafty R (e-bike) and they feel so different even though they are both around the same travel. The Mondraker feels super stable and controlled more like an enduro bike and the Stumpy feels super flickable and playful but a little less stable when things get gnarly. Both are fun in their own ways and complement each other nicely.
My 130x140 Stumpjumper weighs 27 lbs and it just flies over the trails, especially on those 3-4 hour rides. Personaly I would pick the "old" EVO over this one. Cheers from Switzerland
Imagine that...a Spesh pivot bolts creaking and coming loose at the shock yoke and seatstays. I have busted off the heads on some over the years. "This is the bike for nobody." Lol.
Seems like a shame to have chosen the price point model for this test. The biggest complaints were the frame weight and the lack of compression adjustment in the shock. Had a higher spec bike had been tested, you could have had the lighter carbon frame and the Genie shock with comp adjustment. That would have been a better way to compare the Stumpy 15 against the other bikes in the test.
Yeah, the playing field should have been leveled more. What matters more to me than anything is the frame itself, if I throw a new shock and fork on it, how does it compare to another frame with the same fork/shock?
It doesn't need to be all leveled IMO. It is always nice to see how lower spec bikes compare to the high-end test bikes that get most of the attention, but most people won't buy.

If it worked better than Shimano cable actuated I'd at least understand the tradeoff. But it's heavier, shifts worse or at least not better, and costs more.

It would be really interesting to see a redux review or at least comparison of the outgoing SJ Evo, not necessarily in comparison to this bike which seems to improve in a lot of ways, but specifically to many of the other bikes in this years field test, which seem to now at least on paper move more in the direction that bike was in some ways a trailblazer in; especially since, it seems that there a lot of critiques of this years bikes not quite delivering in the ways you expected (Ibis + Rocky come to mind) it seems that we generally assume that new iterations of bikes are always an improvement, but is that always the case?
Funny, my trance is about that and I can't say I've felt like it was the limiting factor on climbs lol. My friends Kona is like, 40 pounds and he's fine.

Specialized doesn't say anything about this in the marketing or in the geo charts. Did you (or could you) measure the effective rear center in the two positions? Thanks!
@@ViciouzCyclez The 2018 alloy modell was a sluggish one. It was too much for xc stuff and too less for rowdy stuff. This 130-140 mm travel area isn't the golden middleway between XC and enduro. If you want to pedal choose a marathon bike, if you are into jumps choose a 150 mm frame.
I don't understand the complaint about the (Genie)shock and bike-feeling. I mean, you are able to adjust it very soft to have a bigger bike feeling. And you are able to adjust it more snappy and playful. What is the problem with that? Sounds good to me. I'm able to setup the bike on demand... And you have the linear feeling of a coil shock with progression at the end. They said it felt sometimes like hanging up when the progression is reached. What is it like with a coil when bottom out?
They actually have a point. The thing is that the Comp alloy and carbon models do not have the three-position compression adjustment on the Genie shock. You get them on the Expert models and up. And in this scenario where the bike is pushed to the limit, you will reach a limit on the rear shock and even the Grip damper where you just can't dial in the dampers anymore and they become overwhelmed. When you adjust it for the descent, it is worse for the uphill and vice versa. Combined with the heavy weight of the bike, it becomes even more noticeable. If you use this bike in a more "normal" way and on trail systems, it will be less noticeable. Just like the old EVO, this is a bike frame that really shines in the carbon versions in terms of absorbing trail chatter and reducing the weight of the bike significantly. Cheers
All this review sounds like my Commencal Al, which I love. Yeah, it is heavier than my CF Neuron when lifting it onto my rack, but you really don't notice it when you ride.
I think that this channel has spoken about that segment at least once. "Is this a do all bike?". So Specialized looks like they have made a good one. Mainly I wanted to comment about the Genie Shock. Do I feel like it should be good out of the gate? Yes, I think a shock should be good out of the gate, but what exactly is good? If and when people go to a shop to purchase these bikes, you can just make the purchase and just walk out of the store. What you should do, give the store techs about 5-15 minutes to go through an initial set up with you. If you ask nicely, they might even right down what they did. Psi is this for the front, it is this for the back. Its going to be up to you to go outside of mid settings with compression, rebound, or to adjust for what you like or where you are riding. So that is a tough question. Should people expect to have to tune? I don't think so, but they should expect to have that ability depending on how much they spent on the shock in question. The Genie seems like it does have adjustability built in.

What about the comparison to other similar bikes like the CANYON Neuron? I'm about to order the Neuron 7 AL because the geometry is trail but modern, and the specs are just up there (FOX 34 GRIP, XT everywhere)
I have ridden the Expert model and thought it was an awesome bike straight off the shelf. My question is how does it compare to the alloy version in particular the coil mullet. Coming from a Meta 2018 the 29er felt very comfortable however I like an alloy model just not sure what wheel size to go. Would the mullet with a bigger fork change the ride feel?
You shouldn't sleep on the updated trance x, just had the opportunity to try one, it shows they improved the leverage curve + it has all these adjustments only 2% of buyers will play with.
It would be very helpful to us if you guys would compare this bike more to many other bikes when you talk about it. A metric ranking system would be much more helpful. Or even rated per category out of the number of bikes tested. Feelings are great but numbers and facts don't lie.
I guess the real question is... How does this bike ride with the cheapest Xfusion shock model? Or similarly any shock but the genie? Also it comes in coil models, so given its 'designed around the genie' does that mean the coil is harsher than normal... Or even softer than normal? Is sprindex basically mandatory then, despite not being stock? It's definitely troubling when the only kinda new and fun thing the bike offers is being considered to not have a good middle ground. It's either too soft with less tokens or too harsh with more tokens. Meanwhile I bet all the other bikes on test are getting on fine with their bog standard shocks. Meh
say whatever, that shock can't be bought separately, and it would most likely feel bad on most bikes, it's not just a tune, it's a different shock, so despite being a "normal"mount and size, it's still proprietary.
before watching it all - this is the replacement for the EVO really and with the Genie, they really built a bike almost as capable as their renound enduro for descents while still being a good decent climber, albeit heavy af. Nothing wrong with FSR as long as the shock is tuned with the right anti-squat/rise. For me, my ideal trail bike would be the Druid (even the V1) - that said, wish these boutiques would be tested along side the big names: Forbidden, Evil, Pivot edit after watching the video, it is interesting how it ramps up super fast at the end and how its not quite a "plow" bike but also not a traditional poppy trail bike neither. As other comments mention, chances are HSC/LSC in the higher end models on the shock could make all the tuning differences other than just the volume spacer.
That's a weird thing about Fox climb switches. They work the wrong way. And accidental hit with the knee shouldn't switch the climb mode on, it should switch it off. I had an old Jeffsy with the DPS that worked the same way. Ended up removing the climb switch.
I think Specialized blew it. They should have just kept making the 150/160mm travel Stumpy Evo which was probably the best trailbike Specialized ever made. If it ain't broke. don't fix it!
This is essentially the evo, with first dibs on the shock technology. Fox is releasing the shock for aftermarket in a few years. The idea is that the midstroke is so good that you don't need the extra travel.
Damn that's heavy, 16.7kg with pedals! that's a few hundred grams heavier than my brothers trek slash 7 in a size XL, I thought this was supposed to be a trail bike?
Realistically, you should carry a repair kit in the downtube and a full water bottle on top of it. So yes, it is definitely too heavy for its purpose. The Carbon Comp is 1 kg less alone, and the Expert models are around 14.5 kg without pedals. Those seem to be more in line in terms of weight travel range.

@benjy288 Yeah, I've owned the Stumpjumper Expert 130x140mm for almost two years now and have customized it. It's 12.2 kg right now. I did buy it on a super sale for around 3600 Euros. In Swiss francs, that's even around 200.- less. I did order it to my German package address and didn't even pay the ~600.- import fees this way when I accidentally assembled it in Germany and rode over the border. 😉😁 The new Stumpy 15 Expert is now 8'000 Euros here, which is absolutely bonkers if you ask me.😊 Cheers

@benjy288 Yes, this is without the pedals. The flat pedals add 300 grams, so it's 12.5 kilograms in total. I've replaced everything with carbon parts over the last ~2 years. I use an Elitewheels pro 36 carbon wheelset (550 euros on Black Friday) at 1.48 kilograms in total. My tires are also not very aggressive. Fast trak t5 in the rear at 670 grams and Ground control t7 front at 850 grams. Basically, if I replace something that wears out, I replace it with something lighter if I see a deal. It's not my goal to go ultralight; it still needs to perform in the Swiss Mountains. 😅 My brother owns a custom-built Scott spark RC 900 Ultimate TR Bike 120x130mm that is 10.2 kg without pedals but also way more expensive, even though he got it with a 30% discount originally. 😉 Honestly, slightly over 13 kg is probably the sweet spot for most bikes. Replacing a Deore cassette if it's worn with an SLX or XT can also save you some 200 grams. That Merida is a sweet-looking bike!

36 lbs, wtf....nice bike bike though, why so heavy? I don't get it, the "trail" bikes are as heavy as an enduro bike and probably close to a downhill bike. if you look at the weights an XC bike is what 25-28lbs, a trail bike should be around 27-30lbs enduro 30+. I wasn't one for complaining about a bikes weight but 36lbs seems ridiculous for a bike in 2024.

I bought a 15 expert and it’s hands down the best bike i have ever had. It’s definitely faster both up and down while also feeling snappy.

Amazing! Specialized finally ditched the properitary stuff on other bikes, and they introduce a new one for this model.
From what I understand nothing internal on that shock is proprietary and a fox float service is the same.
Henry running the fork pretty much closed...I agree on that. That fork and damper needs that if you weigh more than 2 Chihuahuas.

It would be very helpful to us if you guys would compare this bike more to many other bikes when you talk about it. A metric ranking system would be much more helpful. Or even rated per category out of the number of bikes tested. Feelings are great but numbers and facts don't lie.

I guess the real question is... How does this bike ride with the cheapest Xfusion shock model? Or similarly any shock but the genie? Also it comes in coil models, so given its 'designed around the genie' does that mean the coil is harsher than normal... Or even softer than normal? Is sprindex basically mandatory then, despite not being stock?
It's definitely troubling when the only kinda new and fun thing the bike offers is being considered to not have a good middle ground. It's either too soft with less tokens or too harsh with more tokens. Meanwhile I bet all the other bikes on test are getting on fine with their bog standard shocks. Meh

say whatever, that shock can't be bought separately, and it would most likely feel bad on most bikes, it's not just a tune, it's a different shock, so despite being a "normal"mount and size, it's still proprietary.

before watching it all - this is the replacement for the EVO really and with the Genie, they really built a bike almost as capable as their renound enduro for descents while still being a good decent climber, albeit heavy af. Nothing wrong with FSR as long as the shock is tuned with the right anti-squat/rise.
For me, my ideal trail bike would be the Druid (even the V1) - that said, wish these boutiques would be tested along side the big names: Forbidden, Evil, Pivot

after watching the video, it is interesting how it ramps up super fast at the end and how its not quite a "plow" bike but also not a traditional poppy trail bike neither. As other comments mention, chances are HSC/LSC in the higher end models on the shock could make all the tuning differences other than just the volume spacer.
That's a weird thing about Fox climb switches. They work the wrong way. And accidental hit with the knee shouldn't switch the climb mode on, it should switch it off. I had an old Jeffsy with the DPS that worked the same way. Ended up removing the climb switch.
Anytime there is a proprietary component on a bike, watch out. Specialized is known for this. Anyone remember the brain?
I think Specialized blew it. They should have just kept making the 150/160mm travel Stumpy Evo which was probably the best trailbike Specialized ever made. If it ain't broke. don't fix it!
This is essentially the evo, with first dibs on the shock technology. Fox is releasing the shock for aftermarket in a few years. The idea is that the midstroke is so good that you don't need the extra travel.
Initial impressions were it was soft and deep in the travel. Fork was almost at complete "lock out" too?? Weird
I don't know how they ride with their shirts flapping around. I don't wear Lycra but prefer tighter fitting clothing when riding.

Realistically, you should carry a repair kit in the downtube and a full water bottle on top of it.

The Carbon Comp is 1 kg less alone, and the Expert models are around 14.5 kg without pedals.
Those seem to be more in line in terms of weight travel range.

@benjy288 Yeah, I've owned the Stumpjumper Expert 130x140mm for almost two years now and have customized it. It's 12.2 kg right now. I did buy it on a super sale for around 3600 Euros. In Swiss francs, that's even around 200.- less. I did order it to my German package address and didn't even pay the ~600.- import fees this way when I accidentally assembled it in Germany and rode over the border. 😉😁
The new Stumpy 15 Expert is now 8'000 Euros here, which is absolutely bonkers if you ask me.😊

I have a merida one twenty 3000 that has a carbon main frame and alloy rear triangle, and I've managed to get it down to 13.1kg with pedals, but I have all alloy parts, including dh rated spank spike race 33 rims, but I don't have a dropper post either cause I can get more drop without one.
@benjy288 Yes, this is without the pedals. The flat pedals add 300 grams, so it's 12.5 kilograms in total. I've replaced everything with carbon parts over the last ~2 years. I use an Elitewheels pro 36 carbon wheelset (550 euros on Black Friday) at 1.48 kilograms in total.
My tires are also not very aggressive. Fast trak t5 in the rear at 670 grams and Ground control t7 front at 850 grams.
Basically, if I replace something that wears out, I replace it with something lighter if I see a deal.
It's not my goal to go ultralight; it still needs to perform in the Swiss Mountains. 😅
My brother owns a custom-built Scott spark RC 900 Ultimate TR Bike 120x130mm that is 10.2 kg without pedals but also way more expensive, even though he got it with a 30% discount originally. 😉
Honestly, slightly over 13 kg is probably the sweet spot for most bikes.
Replacing a Deore cassette if it's worn with an SLX or XT can also save you some 200 grams.

36 lbs, wtf....nice bike bike though, why so heavy? I don't get it, the "trail" bikes are as heavy as an enduro bike and probably close to a downhill bike. if you look at the weights an XC bike is what 25-28lbs, a trail bike should be around 27-30lbs enduro 30+. I wasn't one for complaining about a bikes weight but 36lbs seems ridiculous for a bike in 2024.

I’m still choked over the whole Cafe Roubaix thing with Specialized. I get they smoothed it over in the end but that’s them in a nutshell.
Since specialized and outside are both partners controlling Pinkbike among others, it’s no surprise that Pinkbike continues to stroke the schlong of specialized.
A little puzzled by having the alloy version on this test. Think most of us here were looking for the carbon version to compare to all the other reviews on the tube. Would also like it if they had touched on running the bike with 160mm fork, since there is a version of that available from the manufacturer. Left wanting a bit more...
