The Prussian Royal Family were not particularly renowned for their intellectual abilities. However, his mother was particularly intelligent. She took after the Coburg family. After she and her husband, then Crown Prince of Prussia, visited Pope Pius IX, the Pope wrote in his Journal “I am an old man and have met many people in my life - no one has ever impressed me so much, in terms of intellectual ability, as the Crown Princess of Prussia”. Had her husband lived, Germany would have proceeded in an entirely different direction. Unfortunately, William II, while intelligent, was too much obsessed with Prussian militarism and that was, eventually, his undoing. However, had he been at the centre of political affairs in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Great War, it would probably never have happened. He fully appreciated that going to war with Russia could only end disastrously - he had the example of Napoleon to consider. In 1908, he was very much affected by the Prince Zu Eulenburg scandal. He and the Prince had been very close friends and he relied upon him for emotional support. The Prince was also a political genius and the completion of the process of the unification of Germany was very much because of his diplomatic efforts with the smaller German states. After the scandal, the Kaiser was advised that he must never communicate with the Prince again and he had a sort of nervous breakdown as a result, which caused him to retire almost entirely from any active involvement in political affairs. He did make it clear to the Chancellor, Von Bethmann-Holweg, that he did not want war. However, the Chancellor had very little influence over the Generals, who had already decided that it was time for war. After the outbreak of war, the Generals demanded that the Kaiser take a back seat. He could present medals, but that was about all.

After German defeat in 1918, he should be sent to the eastern part of Russian Siberia. Not to Netherlands.
