We, too, have a RANS S6 and absolutely love it. We do "grasshopping" here in South Carolina and I have friends with Highlanders, KitFoxes and RANS. In this part of the country we don't "need" the extreme wheels for the grass fields in SC, (we have about 140 of them) and thought we have put the big wheels on our RANS I believe that I got a bit carried away and we will be going back to the 800.8 wheels at the next annual and adding VG's to give us a bit better STOL performance. Does the RANS compete with the Highlander, I believe it does respectably well in the same arena. The entire class of these small, light bushplane do a respectable job at "Having Fun!" That's the whole point isn't it? Great Video.
I live your videos. I read on the comments when you bought the Rand that you would make a comparison video of the Rans and the Kitfox. But, I can't find it anywhere. Did you ever make it? Thank you
Golly that is some gorgeous grass. I love the Highlanders but man for the money, that Rans S6 is sweet. Gotta lot of potential in that platform too. Can't wait to see what else you do to it.
There’s only so far I’ll take the 6. It’s a great plane but the wing is the limiting factor for it. I could push it but I have partners in that plane that wouldn’t appreciate my experimentation so I’ll stick to building up the rockhopper as the real all out bush plane. The 6 is an excellent backcountry machine for exactly what we did this day and I’ll keep it that way. I have larger tires I can throw on for sandbar work but otherwise it’s not far from “done”.
Cool! I bet of you had slats you could give the highlander a run for its money. Carbon Concepts recently developed a carbon fiber slat for the kitfox/avid, they tested it on an avid a few weeks ago. The avid in a near zero wind condition got off the ground in about 60 feet, landed in less. Had the same high angle approach that looked more like a Mackey SQ 12. I would imagine if you talked to Randy Apling, they could easily design one for the rans wing. :-)
Excellent to see an S-6 in that mix, having fun and holding its own. I have a similar S-6 (nosedragger), and would appreciate any details on your oil check door. That's a mod I've been looking for.
Amazing how times have changed, in 1979 I was instructor in Front Royal VA. There were airparks in FL beginning but now they are everywhere it seems.... I covered Delaware to Carolinas, First Flight, back then but how is the lie of the land today? Back then it was Taylorcrafts, Stinsons and stuff but today?......Wow.... In the East where would be a place to locate a developing air park to buy a ot and build....weather, winters are my issues, where is the best overall place to be for access to services and skills for a home builder
Hey! I know the guy who owns that strip. the camp ground residents across the lake complain about his approaches to land as too low. Glad to see you flying.
Too many variables to mention....vg's or not, modded or not 912's, hours of experience, on and on. Personally, I think all you guys are missing out! Nothing beats flying on the center line, meaning a tandem aircraft! RANS S-7/S-7S (both) here. MUCH better viz. I love the deep chord of the RANS wings designs, they really shine at low speed handling, the Highlander, like it's kissing cousins the Kitfox and Avid, are limited by the folding wing/highway width legal thing. So they go longer span, but still don't have the squares we do. Both fun planes, though, for sure, and as an Idaho pilot, I respect the heritage of the Highlander variants!
It was good to finally make it in there! Need to stop by again some time when I can see all the projects since I didn’t get to visit the hangar last time.
I'm sorry, but those two LEDs under the cowling... they make it look like it has bucked teeth lol. sorry, It just caught me off guard at the start hahaha
@@ianslife210 hahaha, all good, again sorry. I just couldn't unsee it roflol. My poor old Jabiru still doesn't look anywhere near as good as your bird though!
How is stumpy coming along? we you expanding the wing and shaped custom wingtips it reminded me of a Cessna mod called www.wingxstol.com/html/gallery.html I am really interested to learn how a longer wing performs. Also the downward turning wing tips seemingly provide more control on super slow approach for landings? Thoughts. I am really curious to see a head to head comparison of a KF S7 STI vs a Rans S21 Outbound? is this possible?
The build is coming along. I’ve made some changes but there’s more video on the way soon. As for that shootout that’s not impossible. I do have access to a s21 locally but no one around me has a sti Kitfox, only the super sport. Honestly the SS Kitfox is a closer comparison. The s21 is fast and slick and will haul a lot but it’s not quite the off airport monster that the sti Kitfox is. They play in different markets other than both being side by side and high wing. The shootout that is closer would be Kitfox/s20/Highlander and that’s one I’d like to do one day.
@@ianslife210 good points indeed. What are you thoughts on the cessna X-wing extension and wing tips? I can see how a wider wing increases the cord. But for a STOL aircraft what would the extra 28" +/- do for slowing things down on landings. How does and smail increase with wing length yield such claims as made by the site as the best performance mod you can do for you Cessna? I'm just trying to get my head around how that slight increase in wing length -- what are the pros and cons essentially. Keep up the great videos and i'm sure a lot of folks besides me are keen to see how you stump jumper aircraft build is coming along. And what engine you're planning for it? (Cough Cough, Rotax 912 with an edge performance turbo kit)
Ian, I gave this a thumbs up and had previously subscribed because I really do like the plane content and your presentation manner. But, seriously dude, why don't you reduce the music content to just the drone flights. Your channel will do much better, and the subscribers and viewers will be so much happier. If someone is forcing you to add the music, then tell us about it - and at least we will understand. In the meantime, keep up the good work. 👍😉
I don’t worry about peoples opinions on music any more. It doesn’t matter what I put in there, someone isn’t going to like it and someone is going to love it. Might as well enjoy it myself! Glad you’re enjoying it though!
Mary Jorgensen Because I’d like to hear the interesting parts of the video like the narration and the engine running, etc. ....anything other than the music.
Why in the bloody hell is an overpowering music bed considered mandatory for an otherwise good video? Speaking for myself, I'd much rather hear the commentary & ambient sounds - (even a spell or 2 of ... gasp! ... silence?) - than the unrelenting pounding of what someone else assumes I must want to hear. IMHO, adds nothing - detracts much!
Unfortunately, too many otherwise decent videos are plagued with similar loud sonic pablum. Still, it is the content creator's choice, not ours. I just kill the volume when the K-Pop crap begins. Beyond that, cool video.
Oh, boy oh boy oh boy...I couldn't Possibly Agree More. What is the point of the Intrusive Distracting metronome-like Frenetic background pseudo-music in Most of the TH-cam Presenters Audio? And, what (I am looking at you, Dan Johnson and the Light Sport channel) about the eardrum bursting volume of the Intro & Exit pseudo-music? NONE of the Fancy Earbud Manufacturers (hello Apple and Bose) has promoted Decibels-Limiting Features of their in-the-ear gear. Does such a feature Even Exist ?
Do you want us to listen to What you have to say, Ian? If so, why the need for Any "music"? They’re just flat fun little planes!
i know I'm pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream newly released series online?
@Miller Cory Flixportal
@Jason Weston thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I appreciate it !
@Miller Cory glad I could help xD
Yup they can. A Modified Rans S6 Coyote won the Stol Competition at Oshkosh last summer! Good video. 👍
Its good to see there are others in the area interested in some off airport flying. I'm training out of hooks now and work in Conroe.
That's the fun low and fast stuff we do in combat missions! Good training!
Good times!
I think this is you best vid yet man. Keep em comin!
I live your videos. I read on the comments when you bought the Rand that you would make a comparison video of the Rans and the Kitfox. But, I can't find it anywhere. Did you ever make it? Thank you
Awesome. Wish there were more grass strips around this area.
Nice Job Ian! You did great and thanks for helping fix my fuel pump ground!
No problem Corey!
I thought that was your plane @ 2:48...I've become fixated on this whole STOL thing. Fascinating planes - Donnie C

Interesting throttle arm, different than anything i,ve seen. Good job.
Been wondering when you were going to make some more videos I like watching the build videos 👍
Its good to see Sierra bravo again, and she’s found a loving home. The tapper wing looks like it performs a lot better at lower elevations.
She’s still well loved here in Texas!
Nice video, what airport is that?
Cool video! I've been to the first strip. the second strip is like 3 miles from my house, and I never knew about it!
What a dream setup that is. Wow! Great video! Thx
Awesome Stuff! Great Video, I love it!! Keep it up!!
Great video. Some questions: engine model.,useful load, and total fuel capacity. Thank you.
Great content! I was wondering if you could tone down the music? I couldn’t here your intercom comments over the music.
Good video! I'm here from Jonas Marcinko. I'll be checking out your other stuff. Subbed.
Fun day. S6 is looking good.
any chance you'd be interest in selling that beauty?
The S6? It may be up for sale to fund a new project. Time will tell.
Excellent as always
So, what were the stats?

Trust me, if I could afford a 7 I would own one. I prefer them as well!
6:12 well said
Seemed a little jerky on the controls. Is that a common thing with stick and rudder planes?
Not necessarily. We’re doing a lot in short order so big movements constantly happen during that sort of operation. Cruising is totally different.
Hey Ian, thanks for stopping by....FlyingHare 34XS.... “the pleasure ranch”
It was good to finally make it in there! Need to stop by again some time when I can see all the projects since I didn’t get to visit the hangar last time.

Editing on an episode for it currently!
How is the "RockHopper" coming along? Regards, Jim in NI UK
Expect a new video in the next few days!

I may have overdone the music in this one as I’ve gotten this comment before. I’ll keep that in mind!

Very nice job on the video and editing, but man, PLEASE get rid of that music. 😣
Unfortunately, I had to stop watching it because it is very annoying. If it was a much lower volume, it would probably be ok.
You don’t like the music just turn your volume down

The music is so good.will you tell me the name of that song pls
The music is fine. Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. You can’t please everyone
I like the music, I'd say just back it off some so it's more background and not up front so much.
