  • The NHIndustries NH90 is a European medium-sized, twin-engine, multirole military helicopter. It was the first production helicopter to feature entirely fly-by-wire flight controls.

The carbon fiber is not good for a utility helicopter. Bullet holes are hard to repair.

I have never liked the NH90 for various reasons. But more importantly our SOCOMD/A special force operators did not like it either - SASR hung on to their ageing Blackhawks by the skin of their teeth - ask anyone [99%] of SOCOMD/A operators 'which' helicopter they prefer and the new Blackhawk wins every time. Without going into detail about the positives vs negatives of both platforms, Australia finally has decided on a mature, plug + play for upgrades Blackhawk.
And finally selected the Apache E - several Apache E's are already delivered and are in the process of IOC.
But what is as a side issue an unprecedented FUBAR even for the most incompetent and dysfunctional Dept of Defence globally - DoD's headquarters in 'Russell' - the decision by the Chief of Army to actually 'bury' what are still capable helicopters that were in their innovatory - this is a national scandal. To simply 'bury' these helicopters in landfill is a national disgrace - why we could not sell them is simply absurd - and if it was not due to the brilliant accountability of Senate Estimates Australians and the world would probably have never known.
Australia's Dept of Defence is 'the' most secret Department in the entire APS. Globally - only the US arguably is more secretive. Billions wasted. A giant cover up - and 0 accountability. No sackings of APS civilian DoD staff, 0 sackings of the bloated mid level officer cadre at Russell.
In other words - business as usual.

The Blackhawk has a worse service record than the Taipan with regards to mechanical failures crashes and deaths, even considering the number built. The Blackhawks were purchased as the US forced it. Their military industrial complex is selling less and less products and as Australia is run by the US and our military fight for them, they want to show a stronger US presence I Australia. Australia has no military, they are all loyal to the US and believe their lies.

That and it was "sabotaged" to make way. They Should just wait for the V280 Valour. There was something sketchy with the head mount failing to correctly display flight data in night time flying by instruments that caused an accident resulting in fatalities.

Norway has calceled the NH90 contract becouse of delivery delays. bad service program, and so on.
We have now ordered Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk Helicopters instead.
This should do us well for several years.
    Love from Norway

    • @tomijorg

Also. a few years back, we got new SAR Helos.
We went from SeaKing (Used as SAR helicopter for the norwegian airforce from 1973 to september 2020 "2020-2023 was a face out period") to SeaQueen. we ordered 16.
I think the MH-60R Seahawk as a naval patrol and antisubmarine helicopter together wil AW101 Marlin, will give us both Combat and SAR capabillities that can serve us for many many years.
The NH90 should never have been ordered. And the norwegian government searched for quite a long time for a reason to get out of the NH90 contract.
If memory serves me correct, there is an upcoming trail where Leonardo Helicopters has the opinion of that Norway was in the wrong then they broke the contract.
IMO as a norwegian citizen, and quite updated on our military, i think we should just by us out of the whole NH90 thing.
Leonardo did not delivere on one singel point.
In fact, they delivered the first 2 (or 3) NH90 out of spec of what was in the contract.
It could also not do anti sub missions in about the first year.
The service program costed about tripple of what the contract stated, and Leonardo could not supply high enough amount of spare parts to storage. Those two reasons is what was used to get out of the program.

Just a little ignorant, the typical arrogant American, the NH90 had its baptism of fire in Iraq and then was used for years in Afghanistan, Libya, Lebanon, Mali, Somalia, this as far as use in the hinterland is concerned, at sea as a helicopter embarked on an infinite number of missions, the last one in the Red Sea against Somali piracy and Yemeni Uti. Be careful to inform yourself before writing.

The Black Hawk proved itself in combat in Somalia as a helicopter that was not built for combat but to carry stuff. The Black Hawk is just a helicopter, not a miracle weapon. The Black Hawk had problems when it was new too. And it's 1000 times worse these days with all the modern technology that's installed everywhere. More electronics leads to more errors in the entire weapon system. With enough time and money, the NH 90 will also become a good and reliable helicopter.
