What an interesting take on the traditional quilting of this flower. I really love how yours turned out with the raw edge applique. It's gorgeous! Helps me see these panels in a whole new light. You have a very creative eye. I agree with some of the other posters... genius!
I've never loved that much fraying edges. But for this quilt it adds so much texture and works so well! It's awesome. I really like that you show your process with all the trials and errors. It's really inspiring and freeing.
I’m a newbie with regards to quilting and had never heard of this type of quilt and appliqué before your channel was recommended to me and now I can’t wait to try doing it for myself. You are a great teacher and are explaining how to do this in a way that someone can easily understand no matter what level they are with regards to sewing and quilting. As a teacher myself I know how important it is to introduce new skills in the 3 different types of learning so that everyone has the chance of learning how to do this technique/skill/and type of sewing and quilting. So thank you for inspiring us to take a chance and try something new.
Good morning lass, i love these beautiful panels by Kaufmann, I love the quilting that you have done in each of the petals and all though i am not a fan of raggity edges, i can appreciate that others find them beautiful. Your "bleeding" actually blends the quilt into a softer look, rather than the stark look that red and white have together(i always put cream or ivory with any red i am making because it has a softer look with red and it's not unlucky), Hospitals of old here in the UK never put red and white flowers together as it was considered unlucky and a sign of death and my mum worked in the hospitals as a craft instructor. I do love that you have abused your handiwork and it has stood up to it. It has achieved what you hoped and definitely gives a different look to the pristine panel quilts that you see on Pinterest, i hope that you enjoy using it as much as the other quilts that you have made. THank you for sharing your time and talent with us, crafty hugs from Norah, Glenochil Village, Scotland
What a terrific idea to enlarge your quilt. I think it looks great. Was enjoying you build the flower to enlarge it. I think the entire quilt looks great. Congratulations. I enjoy watching all that you do.
Wow! As a gardener I love this quilt. As a new quilter I’ve never done appliqué quilting, but I do prefer the look of the cleaner edge of needle turn appliqué. Thank you so much for sharing your gift of quilting with us newbs 💕
What an endeavor your dream “bigger” quilt was! I really like the “ragged” edges it has. I’ve made a couple of rag quilts. One using cotton fabrics front and back and one using denim on the front and flannel on the back. Love the texture they have! Just today I saw a video where improv raw edge flowers were placed on blocks that was quilt as you go. All the edges were exposed front and back. It looked so soft and cuddly! I enjoy your tutorials! Thanks!
Try Color Catchers by Shout and it will catch all that red dye away from your background. Red especially bleeds and needs this. Try washing it again with the product and see if it works. Good luck and great job! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! This concept is so unique and interesting! I love how you took two smallish panels and made them into one larger quilt top! I enjoyed watching the flower “grow” as you added the petals. Such a cool idea! Absolutely love it!!!!! I just went and looked at the selection on Amazon, and I wonder what it would look like if you used this method but with two different color panels, like the pink and purple.
I love love love Broderie Perse. Used it when I fist started quilting years ago. Did not even realize it was a legitimate style until I had some formal quilting lessons. Yours is gorgeous.
I love the raggy edge look and that quilt is gorgeous! I think the pink background was a happy accident - if you hadn't confessed I never would have known. :-) April
I like the color run! I did a red, white and blue quilt for my son and the red bled and I actually liked it better afterwards. It was not even in the bleeding, but it still looked pretty cool. Now I use the color catchers though because that isn't something I want to take a chance on again! I loved your quilt. You were really brave to cut those flowers and then apply them to another piece of fabric. That was a lot of work. Thanks so much for sharing this project. Not sure I'll try it, but I really like the finished quilt.
Happy accidents happen all the time. Probably no one will notice unless you mention it. Besides it's your quilt if you like it that's all that should matter. Needle-turn applique would make me crazy! That's why sewing machines were invited.:-)Very pretty.
I have not done raw edge yet, but have a project to complete some day. I love what you did here. This is the best rendition of these large flowers I have seen. Very pretty and striking.
This is a fab project, the accident with the colour run has just added to the beauty of this quilt. So in this case, it is what we call a happy accident xxx
It looks beautiful. I think that I would have kept one panel whole and just trimmed around the outside petals. Then I would have cut up the second panel and put those petals around the outside of the first panel.
Megan - your quilt is beautiful 🤩 - I’ve never done raw edge, but o am now reconsidering it. If I do, being you pointed out that the red fabric bled, I will probably pre treat my panels with Retayne (dye setting) first and go from there. I already have the fuseable (a bolt of it) ready to be used - glad I bought it! Happy Quilting!
Clever treatment! I'm thinking about applying your technique with a black bat ... you are very creative and courageous with your approach. Thank you --
VERY CREATIVE MEGAN!! I love the originality and your approach! The finished quilt is just gorgeous and comfy looking! Sorry the KONA Red binding bled on your quilt :( As much as I hate to prewash fabrics, I have found that doing ONE treatment of RETAYNE on red and other brightly colored solids is a quick and simple LIFE SAVER! Retayne is a color fixative which prevents the fabric from bleeding in the future. I put the red fabric in the washing machine on Cold- gentle/delicate cycle and allow the machine to fill up with water and add a capful of Retayne. I let the machine agitate for a minute or so to disperse the Retayne, then I put the machine on "HOLD" and allow the fabric to soak for 30 mins. Then I let the machine finish the cycle. To prevent the fabric from fraying in the washing machine or dryer, I fold it with raw edges touching and run a quick zig-zag stitch down the sides (you could use a serger if you have one). After washing & drying, I simply lay out the fabric and trim off the zig-zag edge. Easy Peasy! I also will pull the fabric out of the dryer while it's about 80% dry and mist it with spray starched, let it air dry, then press it. Note: For extra peace of mind, you can throw a color catcher in the mix. ~~Christy~~
I love this! I do lots of raw edge appliqué and I would stitch each petal individually before all over quilting and I was so happy you used the longarm for that! It's incredibly time consuming ! I make a lot of baby quilts using this method. I think the raw edges are great!
Megan, stumbled on your tutorial, wow. I have been wanting to do one for soooo long but the thought of free motion kind of held me back. Love, love, love the raw edge approach and yes it does make the petals stand out. Not being a pinklov’n gal I’m surprised how mellow the fade makes the quilt more comfy looking and as a well loved quilt I’m going to try my hand at one. I think I’d only work a turned edge if I were going to use it as a wall quilt.( that would take years) lol. Thanks for your terrific presentation it’s genius.
It's beautiful!! I did a quilt as you go raw edge rose & absolutely loved it. I even cut the binding down the center after it was applied so it would fray. I have to make a couple more because my daughters & granddaughters were fighting over who was going to get it. Linda Losier
Very ambitious of you, bu t I have to say it’s beautiful and would love one like this. I’m not a fan of fusible, did my first project and have to say I’d rather sew any day. Thanks for sharing I wish I was brave enough to copy you but thinking it’s not going to happen. 👍❤️😊
I like the quilt, really like it..... bleeding and all. The frayed edges add dimension. 😊 👍 💕. I wonder if a color catcher would have made much difference 🤔
Wow your panel is really beautiful. Not sure but if you re-wash with Color Catchers you may improve the white areas. But honestly..its really beautiful.
I like the softer pink background 🤗. Have you ever done snippets in your quilting? It was quite popular years ago. With your leftover fused material and your artistic ability I bet you would be able to make something beautiful 🧵🖼!
Your quilt is beautiful 😍 I think the color bleed was a happy accident. But, if in the future you want to keep it from happening, try color catching sheets. Shout and carbona make these, or you can diy them. Hope this helps. Happy quilting 😊
I love this. I am not sure how I missed it when you put it up. I am taking a raw edge applique workshop with Peter Bryne this weekend. We are using smaller pieces and using glue sticks to secure everything. Tomorrow we do the quilting. It is too bad the red bled, it is not really noticeable on screen until you showed it beside the original grunge fabric. I know needle turn applique is not on my horizon.
What a gorgeous quilt! Wouldnt have noticed the "pink" background if it hadn't been pointed out. It's beautiful and I'm not a huge fan of raw edge applique but then I'm not big on applique at all. Lol
Ive been working on a dream big panel. Ive been tossed on the petals being different after I started… i think I lije them the same. More traditional flowerlike? Perhaps I just need work on petal design for differences. Thanks for showing this technique with raw edge.
I think the quilt looks marvelous! I was wondering if the red would bleed out into the white, but it turned out perfect! It's got that tie die affect that just adds charm to the seamed applique - it all flows beautifully together. That was a pretty gutsy move! I'm not sure I would've chanced it - perhaps I could now (?) And besides, aren't we our own worst critics? Nicely done!
It was definitely easier to cut these up knowing I had more sitting around just in case it turned out terrible! Lol. I figure I can try all this crazy stuff so if it’s awful, nobody watching has to waste their fabric!
Lovely project even if raw edge is not to my taste. That said, I was still quite impressed with the results. Sorry your binding ran but honestly, I think it still turned out great. I rather like the pink background! Cheers!
I have struggled with Wonder Under so many times. I just watched Alex Anderson interview a woman who uses Mod Podge diluted and said she had no trouble with sewing with it. Just an idea, so in appreciation of your honesty. The quilt turned out beautifully. I have several of those panels in different colors, had the same thought about the size of them, going to combine a couple, what a brilliant solution!
Interesting!! I’ve never heard of trying mod podge or a liquid. I briefly considered using some spray baste but by then, it was all pinned and everything.
Wow…what a lot of work, and the ragged edge looks great . I also used some of that White Grunge in a Christmas quilt. I didn’t have enough for the whole quilt, so I added a different white fabric for the background. The pattern was red and green snowflakes with a white background. I washed it with colour catchers, and the colours bled only on to the White Grunge which made it go grey. (So I think it was maybe my green fabric that bled, not the red). The other white fabric I used, stayed white! I washed again with more colour catchers, didn’t resolve the problem. So my white background is grey and white, totally disappointed in the White Grunge fabric.
I used 4!!! Lol. I thought for sure that would be enough along with the synthropol but that dark red wide backing was just too much I guess. Lesson learned-I’ll only use it with dark quilt tops or I’ll prewash!
Thank you SO much for addressing the bleeding! I ‘used’ to be a religious pre-washer and stopped several years ago and have been sadly disappointed. My red didn’t make my white pink (which would have been acceptable). I ended up with dark red blotches in the worst places, and uneven used the color grabbers in the wash. 👎. They won’t come out now!
I enjoy looking at raw edge appliqué done by others as I think it is a great technique and I love how the edges fray. Having done raw appliqué myself, I must admit that I dislike sewing it and prefer to do needle turn appliqué by hand. Your quilt looks great, even with the backing fabric having bled on to the front background. I always use a colour catcher in my washing machine the first 2-3 times I wash my quilts. I’m interested to know if you did and if you did, I’m thinking the backing and binding fabric must have been over saturated with dye. Beautiful end result regardless.
I used several color catchers as well as synthropol in the wash! I thought that would be enough but I guess more than 50% red fabric was just too much.
I just finished my first raw edge applique project. I made a gnome table runner. I tend to become bored quickly or will not finish a project because I am just not into it. Yo be honest, I think am too anal to enjoy the raw edge look. I still need to make a turned edge applique project. I have a feeling I will only use either application for "whoopsie" mistakes and/or accidents.
This doesn't appeal to me at all. It looks like a hot mess. Might be different in person. Maybe I'm a bit fussy on quilts. I like clean lines unless it's a utility quilt. It was beautiful just the way it was. I can see figuring out a way to make the petals puffy but the shreds and the jagged cuts just not my idea of beauty.
That’s ok! It’s definitely a different look. I just wanted to challenge myself to enlarge the design and this was my first idea to try. There’s room for all kinds of quilting styles and you certainly don’t have to like everything.
Hey Babs, do you know what else isn’t an idea of beauty?… being extremely rude. Your negative comments were uncalled for and completely unnecessary. You should work on yourself.
I really appreciate that you don’t edit out any mistakes or learning moments. I think we forgot that we are all continuously learning.
Stunning. And the color bleed IMHO is a happy accident that softens the white frayed petal edges to create a true masterpiece. Genius.
What an interesting take on the traditional quilting of this flower. I really love how yours turned out with the raw edge applique. It's gorgeous! Helps me see these panels in a whole new light. You have a very creative eye. I agree with some of the other posters... genius!

I don’t care that it bled, great idea - stunning result!
I like the raw edge and the pinkish background does not detract from your quilt.
I did a raw edge appliqué quilt for my oldest almost 14 yrs ago and I still love it!!
THANK YOU for showing your quilted feathers on the long-arm AND the domestic machine.
Gorgeous, and such a great way to use a big panel!
What a terrific idea to enlarge your quilt. I think it looks great. Was enjoying you build the flower to enlarge it. I think the entire quilt looks great. Congratulations. I enjoy watching all that you do.
love your results. Raw edge applique is all I do and it works so well in this application! Great job!!
So gorgeous. Spectacular. Great job.
Wow! As a gardener I love this quilt. As a new quilter I’ve never done appliqué quilting, but I do prefer the look of the cleaner edge of needle turn appliqué. Thank you so much for sharing your gift of quilting with us newbs 💕
I like any kind of appliqué. Yea!!!👍🏼💐👏
Very adventurous! I’ll bet you could do something with solids, as you likely know the petals by heart! You are so creative and fun to watch!
Very creative use of panels!
I like the look of the quilt with the dye bleeding. Stark white against the red would have shocked the eye.
I do love raw edge applique. I also use Lori Holt's method of applique when I don't want the raw edge. This is a great project. Thx for sharing!
I didn’t think I’d like the raw edge but you sold me. I’m gonna try it on my current table topper project. Thanks!
What a cool idea

gorgeous!!!! love the flower how it turned out.....and the color bleed? meh. looks great!!!!! well done!
Gorgeous! ❤
Wash in cold water and get some fabric wash for your color
and it can remove your pink!
I love love love Broderie Perse. Used it when I fist started quilting years ago. Did not even realize it was a legitimate style until I had some formal quilting lessons. Yours is gorgeous.

I love it!!!!!!

I don't have instagram so this is a fab idea .
Loved the end product
Clever treatment! I'm thinking about applying your technique with a black bat ... you are very creative and courageous with your approach. Thank you --
I love the quilt. I’m probably not going to do that. Way, way above my experience. But I love it.
I won't b doing this BUT I love it!!

I personally would prefer a nice finished crisp edge. But yours turned out beautiful.
If you didn’t know it was white it looks beautiful and I did applicate in a Jean jacket and love the raw edges
Very ambitious of you, bu t I have to say it’s beautiful and would love one like this. I’m not a fan of fusible, did my first project and have to say I’d rather sew any day. Thanks for sharing I wish I was brave enough to copy you but thinking it’s not going to happen. 👍❤️😊
Love it , haven’t tried this method, yet. They make a color catching sheet for bleeding of colors. (I think by Shout, put in wash) it works great!
Yes. Shout Color Catchers are my go to for anything that might bleed in the wash as well as adding some baking soda and vinegar
I have a member of my guild that does art quilts with tiny snippets and they are amazing!!!! It’s definitely on my list of things to try.
Your quilt is beautiful 😍 I think the color bleed was a happy accident. But, if in the future you want to keep it from happening, try color catching sheets. Shout and carbona make these, or you can diy them. Hope this helps. Happy quilting 😊

You're so funny :) I can hear you laughing way over here! Have a beautiful day!
Lovely project even if raw edge is not to my taste. That said, I was still quite impressed with the results. Sorry your binding ran but honestly, I think it still turned out great. I rather like the pink background! Cheers!
Could you get the same look using a metallic to the edges of the petals? I like it as it is to a degree but would want to keep trimming the frays! 😅
I think heatnbond lite would be a better fusible for this project
I have struggled with Wonder Under so many times. I just watched Alex Anderson interview a woman who uses Mod Podge diluted and said she had no trouble with sewing with it. Just an idea, so in appreciation of your honesty. The quilt turned out beautifully. I have several of those panels in different colors, had the same thought about the size of them, going to combine a couple, what a brilliant solution!
Interesting!! I’ve never heard of trying mod podge or a liquid. I briefly considered using some spray baste but by then, it was all pinned and everything.
Try Steam-A-Seam2. With the sticky back it's easier to place the pieces without using pins. You wouldn't get the rag edge.
I used this panel and it’s not as fancy as yours but I love it!! I’m going to post a picture on your FB!!
I saw it!! It’s so pretty!!
Wow…what a lot of work, and the ragged edge looks great . I also used some of that White Grunge in a Christmas quilt. I didn’t have enough for the whole quilt, so I added a different white fabric for the background. The pattern was red and green snowflakes with a white background. The other white fabric I used, stayed white! I washed again with more colour catchers, didn’t resolve the problem. So my white background is grey and white, totally disappointed in the White Grunge fabric.
Take a tip from Bob Ross there's no such thing as a mistake it's just happy accidents😌❤️🙏🏽🛐
That is so creative! I absolutely love it. Have you ever used color catchers when washing quilts in bold contrasting colors? It works great for me.
I used 4!!! Lol. I thought for sure that would be enough along with the synthropol but that dark red wide backing was just too much I guess. Lesson learned-I’ll only use it with dark quilt tops or I’ll prewash!
Love the quilt. For the bleeding try "save my bleeding quilt" from vicky welsh. Totaly saved my new york beauty, pink bleeding in white and green.
Oh my. A bleeding New York beauty makes my palms a little sweaty!!! What a tragedy!
Oh no!!!! I feel really lucky that mine bled evenly but I’m sure my face when I first saw it was pretty terrible lol.
One web product I used required pre washing the fabric
It is beautiful….nice job. Just one question. What possessed you to wash that in hot water??? 🤣🤣🤣
Lol. Every quilt gets washed in hot water in this house! It’s the standard cycle on my washer and I’m not the only one that does laundry 😂
I just finished my first raw edge applique project. I made a gnome table runner. I tend to become bored quickly or will not finish a project because I am just not into it. Yo be honest, I think am too anal to enjoy the raw edge look. I still need to make a turned edge applique project. I have a feeling I will only use either application for "whoopsie" mistakes and/or accidents.
sound is out in the important parts ...to me.
Needle turn for me, I do not like the ragged edges.
I can't bring myself to leave anything raw edge - it just looks tatty and badly made to me.
Yes, you’re a bit fussy on quilts and a bit unkind in comments. You can say you dislike this kind of applique without going on and on and on about it.
That’s ok! It’s definitely a different look. I just wanted to challenge myself to enlarge the design and this was my first idea to try. There’s room for all kinds of quilting styles and you certainly don’t have to like everything.
