He even waits until I'm in bed and have the covers pulled back up before he even comes back in the room. Then he jumps up at the end of the bed and comes and lays down by me. I guess there were too many times when it didn't work out right when he was younger and he figured out this way was easiest. • @OG_Wonder_Woman
      @OG_Wonder_Woman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yes, strong possibility. I interpreted it as four separate statements. Mom, COME, this is time sensitive. I hear a NOISE. I think it's a DOG. I WANT to go see. She usually uses all done if she wants something to stop. I think she was wanting to check it out together with Mom, hence pointing her body at the window.
      To me using mad was more expressing frustration (the ears and tail as well) that she couldn't express herself clearly enough to investigate the noise fast enough. My pets have gotten mad if I didn't go look out the window or door fast enough.
      I always pay attention to my pets if they are concerned about outside noises. I myself am very good at interpretation of animal vocalizations. I will ignore barking for hours and then suddenly respond to just one bark because it means something different. My pets do the same, they don't care until they hear something worth caring about. I've been outside, in the country, at 3 am with a flashlight, because when 2 dogs and 2 cats all agree you better go check it out, you check it out, even when your human ears can't hear it! I'd start my search in front of which ever window all four pets ran to watch from, and 9 times out of 10, there is a reason!
      My partner is not fluent in either cat or dog, and he's very slow when I start yelling, check outside! Unfortunately, my biggest concern came true when our neighbors cat was killed behind our house. I had told him the dogs (who have been barking non-stop for years and irritating the whole block) had changed to a murderous vocalization, and that he needed to move his ass and RUN when I said go check. Before the barks were always high anxiety or territorial aggression, but never intent to kill. These dogs are in a yard that borders our house and we've had to intervene in a few situations. He wasn't able to save the cat, and my indoor only dog witnessed the whole murder, which was traumatizing for him too.
      So maybe it wasn't the noise bothering her this time, but rather she felt whatever the dog was 'saying' warranted investigating, esp since Billi likes dogs. To me, from the minute she walked to press come, her body language indicated she thought this situation required speed. But of course, every cat is different, so I could be wrong.

    • @lilyl5492
      @lilyl5492 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OG_Wonder_Woman I think you are right. All mammals have a similar autonomic nervous system that allows a group response to threat - conveyed very quickly from one nervous system to another via body language (e.g. freeze and assess/orient to threat), vocal tone (urgency, life threat or safety cues) and even subtle shifts of heart rate and breathing. Maybe what Billi wanted was to go see together - to assess the shared potential threat. and possibly tell it to back off!
      Since lock down me and my cat do this a lot - if either one of us jumps at a sound and we both go to stare at what ever it is! If I don't like a surprise visitor he comes over to be held too. We have synced up our responses to a sense of threat and resource, including absolute disbelief if I eat meat with out sharing any! which rarely happens cos I feel the guilt/urge to share the carnivore-love immediately! It's become instinctual

      Interesting question. Theory of mind in non-human animals is often hard to study. I have heard of a dog acting as a seeing eye dog for a blind dog, so it's not unheard of that an animal might be able to figure out another animal is sense-impaired. Hard to know for sure, though.

      @@jaschabull2365 there are not just 'seeing eye ' dogs for thr blind (they have existed for nearly 100 years),but now days 'hearing' dogs for the deaf.
      But dogs and cats are somewhat different, because dogs want to cooperate with their pack members (us humans) while cats are not so willing. This is why people who don't know cats still dispute their intelligence unfortunately, not lack of intelligence, lack of cooperation :))

    • @greenpiersystem
      @greenpiersystem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The other thing to note is that other button pets have shown that even though they can be and grow to be remarkably intelligent, they don't seem to be aware that they are different from people; all of the ones I've seen have shown confusion when met with any challenge to them being different than their owners, most obviously being Bunny, who was visibly confused that she didn't look like her owners when she saw herself in a mirror, as well as asking questions with her buttons and making remarks that indicate that she struggles with differentiating herself as a dog and her owners as humans. This probably means, in a strange twist, Billi probably thinks her Mom is a very disabled "cat" since she can't hear anything Billi can or see in the dark, and Billi might not recognize that she is different than her owners.

      Cats have no way of counting in regular cat-to-cat communication, or in their vocal communication with humans, so it would be highly surprising if she were to count off things even given the ability to do so.
      It is more likely to me that she repeats things as she's going over them in her head, somewhat comparable to how a toddler might repeat the same things.

    • @MandMs05
      @MandMs05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@IAmBael I do believe it's more likely she repeats them as she thinks of them or just however many times she thinks is appropriate, but many animals have at least a basic ability to count despite not being able to express numbers.
      Most animals (including some insects) can count up to 3 or 4 before it just becomes "many" (the same for humans without any way of keeping track! Without some pattern or a way to tally the total, we can't tell numbers after 4. 5 and 6 are indistinguishable to us)
      If Billi got number buttons, it would likely go 1, 2, 3, 4, many. And she could learn the difference between the numbers and easily understand. Though it's debatable if a cat would be able to understand numbers like 12, 16, 36, or 219.

    I just found these videos in my recommended and I am in such awe over the genius of this. It's like some kind of behaviorism thing where the animal learns to associate different noises with different stimuli. The cat is highly trained and able to use the buttons to communicate its feelings extremely well and sure maybe it might not be perfect sometimes because what the cat is implying might not always come through but this is amazing im still in shock and disbelief that an apparatus like this exists to train an animal with and reach this extent of communication.

    This is so neat. As a former pet owner (and hoping to have a pet again someday), I've always wondered what dogs/cats could say if given the opportunity. This is an opportunity for cats like Billi (and on a separate channel, Bunny and Otter the poodles-I think) to have a platform for speaking their minds. Whoever created those buttons is an utter genius. And thank you, Billispeaks, for making my day a fair bit brighter.

    I went through many thoughts with this one lol.. like maybe she wanted to go outside like the dog, or even to visit the dog? Or maybe she was even trying to convey what the dog was saying? (the dog was making noise because it was mad?) Or it could be just that she was mad that the dog was still barking? Also wondered if she was pushing ‘noise’ and ‘mad’ to the count of how many times the dog barked (or even that the dog was possibly saying it was mad over and over?) 🤷‍♀️ So many thoughts with this one.

    The scientific part of me would love to get a scan of billi's brain to compare with a few other cats. I suspect she's got a very active neural network from all the contemplating she's done around figuring out how to communicate via soundboard. 🤔

    • @joostdriesens3984
      @joostdriesens3984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have a MSc degree in cognitive psychology. This video experiment is very interesting, but not for the reasons you think. If you take a brain scan from this cat you would see nothing special. Cats have amazing brains for cat things like running up trees, but they can't process abstract symbolic language. This is defined in large part by the brain anatomy, cats have small and simple brains compared to primates.
      If Billy could do what is implied in the video, it would turn the whole academic field of neuroscience on its head and drastically change our idea on how the brain works. These ideas were formed on combined research experience of thousands of years and countless animal and human subjects.
      So what is actually the case is that Billy is just a happy cat that likes to press random buttons in exchange for attention from his lady.
      The interesting part of the video is the people commenting! People are seeing patterns (that are not real), and the human brain is very good at that! There is not a dog to be seen or heard, but everyone is imagining stories that Billy hears or sees dogs that we don't or wants a dog companion or saw a dog yesterday or whatever. Billy is like a living Ouija board! 😄

    • @alexrosario423
      @alexrosario423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joostdriesens3984 sounds like bias on your part to me. You underestimate the power of adaption I think- a common mistake in the biological sciences. Without running the proper experiments, you nor I can make any claim. You can state what you believe, and correlate research in the past to this, but unless you have research with a cat thats been trained it's whole life in the use of a soundboard like Billi has, I doubt it's relevant.
      I mean, there is definite intentionality in her button presses. They're not so random considering she goes out of her way to avoid buttons and searches for specific buttons to press. I'm not saying she's got a strong understanding of language necessarily, but she has definitely shown some degree of pattern recognition. It would be interesting to test how nurture has affected her development, if at all.
      I am not dissuaded sir, I still want that cat in a CAT-scan for science!

    • @joostdriesens3984
      @joostdriesens3984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@alexrosario423 There is definitely intentionality in her presses. Billy likes pressing buttons.
      Billy can even learn single button meanings, like 'food' or 'open door'. However I don't believe (based on scientific findings and my own observations as a big fan of cats) that Billy can learn combinations of concepts, especially if they are abstract (like 'afternoon' or 'noise). It's the same as you and I can never have cat reflexes no matter how early we start learning.
      I would recommend the Billy 'rage' video in which she presses the 'mad' button 20 times, but she is perfectly happy as you can see from her normal non-verbal cat communication.
      I was thinking about an MRI scan, but now that you mention a CAT scan for the cat, you have convinced me that this indeed is a worthwhile and necessary endeavour! 😄

    • @GoneGrimdark
      @GoneGrimdark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joostdriesens3984 this is interesting. Do you think Billi doesn’t truly understand? She clearly has no concept of sentence structure, which is expected. Noise dog and dog noise would be interchangeable to her. But she does seem to correlate words to common actions or objects. Dogs clearly assign meaning to certain words ‘walk’ ‘treat’ so why wouldn’t Billi be able to request certain things with the button?

    • @joostdriesens3984
      @joostdriesens3984 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoneGrimdark Requesting things with a button or even a couple of buttons (an action sequence) is fine for cats, one can also do it with mice, birds, dogs etc. It's called classical conditioning in Psychology.
      However, these videos claim that you can have conversations with your cat and that the creative use of the buttons reveal abstract logic and reasoning that the cat has developed and is now able to express through the buttons. The mistake of projecting our own thoughts and feelings on animals is called 'Anthropomorphism'.
      Below is an example of a simple classical conditioning video and is imo a more realistic insight to how cats think and act. It is also super cute :-)

There is the times she knows the microwave beeping is noise; and when it's over Mom is freed from its spell with something good to eat. I'm still a bit fascinated by the idea that I did have the "I wish I knew what my cat is saying" and then I could now get the wish and have to interact with a two-year-old intellect for fifteen or so years. It's another step down that road someone created in a pet food ad campaign of being a 'pet parent.'
