- I have a look at 3 Yesterday year speaker cabinets and see what is inside
Remember these are the lower end units made by each manufacture at the time.
All these 3 cabinets are made from covered chipboard and as the channel progresses and I get more up the range from different manufactures I will compare their cabinets as well.
Of course the actual drivers will play a big part and be the main reason for the speakers being more expensive.

I've got the Celestion 3s - I use them in the bedroom for playing relaxing music late at night. Lovely sounding, they replaced some KEF C10s which were a little "sterile".
8:55 I'd call that material chipboard all day. MDF is made of much finer materials.
Chipboard isn't that bad, Warferdale actually us it together with MDF board in their new retro line of speakers like the Linton.
Yes think that is spot on it is chipboard.

Interesting fact about Celestion 3.
Designed by Martin Robert’s (also designed the 5’s and Celestion 300’s)
He modelled the 3’s on Celestion Ditton 10’s, actually using the old Ditton 10 bass unit in the prototype. 😊

I actually owned all three of these in the 80s/90s.
8:27 those small yellow “capacitors” are the ptc protection devices.
Could be worth changing those and the tweeter capacitor but in saying that my ms45ti sounds ok stock. Sony APM 141ES uses the same tweeter and 2.5 way arrangement as ms45ti, but it has a stronger cabinet, better crossover and IMO sounds nicer; more modern, clean and clear needs a little treble reduction for my tastes.
Mordaunt Short has a bit more of the older vintage sound with less deep bass, but some people may prefer this sound signature.

@@MichaelYates Also made in Germany so it must be some kind of Euro thing they had going on at that time.
Wharfdales look to be the most budgetty. I like the look of the Mordaunt-Short Crossovers best.
That’s saying something because the ms crossover is still quite budget-y . But you do get a 2nd order / 3rd order filter I guess
Great review Michael, You should make a hybrid mashup with the best parts. Yatesui Speakers may become very sought after in a few years time ..lol

Hi ! i love so much your videos because since i was a kid i have had always the instinct of looking inside my toys. Just a comment about internal wiring. Sometimes it is funny to think that some speaker cables have the section of a tube hose when the drivers coil wires are instead very thin. Just a decent section for short lengths is more than enough for me. Thanks a lot and kind regards, gino
Thanks for watching. Well I was a toy opener myself and not all worked after I opened and tried to put them back together lol. I would have a broken toy and my parents would not be to happy. Lucky enough I have learned a lot since. Though now and then I get caught out. And yes I cant see a 6 inch wire being one think ness or the other being much of a sound changer, These speaker companies must know what they are doing for the sake of 1p or 2p
@@MichaelYates Good morning and thank you very much for your kind and precious reply The english loudspeaker manufacturers have a huge experience and are able to give great sounds even at affordable prices In the 80's I was an avid reader of magazines like hifi choice and what hi-fi always looking for so-called giant killers or best buys.
I signed up to your channel and saw that there is a video about the Musical Fidelity MC2 speakers which I also have a pair but with a woofer that scrapes and I believe is unrepairable. I take the liberty of writing to you to ask for your opinion on that video. Thanks again and best regards, gino
@@gino3286 it’s possible to repair most woofer issues. But it’s a bit fiddly and precise for the average person to attempt. I’ve repaired many a woofer in the past, though I’m beginning to want to do other things these days lol
Maybe I’ll make a how to video one day but it does help to have experience :)

The most important thing is to understand quality Some old speakers have very good drivers ... some new ones have only a very nice box but the components are low quality In particular good woofers are quite expensive Kind regards gino
I just bought a pair of the Celestion 3's off eBay for £45 in complete ignorance other than I wanted to upgrade old Wharfdale 9's in the conservatory having just upgraded to amp and cd to a Cambridge Audio AM1 and CD5. Looking forward to hearing the difference!!

Great look into the components making up the different speakers.
I prefer larger gauge wire for the interconnection of the speakers to the crossover. But, (from my old memory) 0.5mm*2 copper wire is 35 milliohm/meter. So with very short connection lengths, a small gauge wire should have little impact the speakers performance.
