Time flies, it's hard to believe I filmed the "In Search of Shirley" video seventeen years ago! Judging from the comments it seems you've already got your hands on the GPS coordinates or have detailed instructions on how to get to the crash site. You were indeed correct when you theorised that we trekked up the mountain from the plains below. Great job mate in getting out there and having a look, it's rough out there and the camera just doesn't do justice to the steepness of the terrain, not to mention the oppressive heat and humidity you endured.
Hi guys, my family used to be free land holders for Mt Archer and it’s in that area (which is Private property) the crash is located. My family has sold the lease to the Koala foundation and it’s still private property. My family looks after the crash site and memorial plaque placed by band and friends/family. The last thing we want is to have it vandalised (certainly not implying you would do that) but plenty of people would. Please be careful.
Your family dont own that land. You stole it off of the aborigi8nals all with white man paper work. And you stole it off of black men and now you are telling other white men not to go there hahahahahahhahaha
You are miles out, if the map that you show is where you actually walked. I went to the wreck site not to many years after the accident, on Xmas eve actually and it was as hot as hades and the humidity in the really think undergrowth make breathing a bit of an effort. I went more or less straight up from the mountain end of the grass strip about 3/4 of the way up and slightly over to the right. The main rotors flexed and took the tail off the helicopter in flight . The actual tail rotor is in a blokes bar down at flat ground level. I have been to probably hundreds of wreck sites around the place, but this one is quite interesting as it is more modern and a helicopter for a change, and of course we all "knew" the pilot
Great vid mate. Huge effort. Yeah good call on the water, no place to be stuck fatigued and out of water. Maybe next time. Poor Shirl, I remember when this hit the news. Big loss to the music industry. Cheers.
The version of the outcome of this incident as I know it was that Shirl either misread or severely underestimated the weather which was as we know fairly windy and gusty on the day, Unfortunately the way stronger than predicted head winds on the return trip eventually led to the chopper prematurely running out of fuel, That was the original story I've been told by more than one person over the years. RIP
Pilot and media personality Graeme (Shirley) Strachan was fatally injured when he lost control of the helicopter he was flying after it was damaged in severe mountain wave turbulence and crashed on the north-east slope of Mount Archer, Queensland on 29 August 2001. This was the main finding in the final accident report released today by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. "The extensive damage to the helicopter, severed tailboom and the location of parts on the ground, led transport safety investigators to conclude that the main rotor blade may have contacted the tailboom in flight," Air Safety Deputy Director, Alan Stray said.
The crash site is well known and there are plenty of videos and pictures out there on the internet. You went the wrong way it's over the right side of the mountain. But it's been 23 years since the crash so id say there would be not much left with people picking from it for over two decades!
Definitely a winter explore and not in 42°c 🥵 Amazing there is no coordinates for the site. 🤷 I don't use the rubber ends on my hiking poles. They tend to slip otherwise. Enjoyed the explore. 👍
Good effort M8 - 42 degrees! Reckon I'll stick to the odd rainforest walk at this time of year, or maybe just sitting here in the AC watching crazy people on TH-cam! I'm sure the local council knows those co-ordinates, but I guess they are not going to share them. You need to get yourself a Sawyer Squeeze John, brilliant bit of kit that probably weighs less than that stool, and could save your life in all these off track adventures you do. That bit of water you found could have been made safe to drink in a few minutes if needed.
Thanks Paul.... I have since gotten myself an excellent Katadyn Water Filter. I should have gotten one years ago, game changer, and possibly a life saver. It's part of my loadout now.
@@offtrackxplorer Hadn't heard of that one but it looks pretty smicko! Was there a review video I missed? I've had my Squeeze for a few years and always use it, even in Lamington etc (water is probably already way better than our tap water in those creeks anyway but I'm a bit squeamish and it only takes a minute to fill up your water bottle knowing there are no impurities in it so why not ).
I bet the yowie "s head poppe"d up when he heard " you say the word" RECTUM " last thing you want to say in yowie country , you probably scared him" and he Walked backwards ?😮 33:43
Have you enquired with the D'Aguilar National Park rangers? The Department will probably have coordinates of the site. Someone at the local pub will know someone who knows where it is. That does take the adventure out of it tho.
That was interesting to watch. 👍 Next time ( 😉 ) would you consider using a drone to zoom in from above before you decide on a path? I live north of Brisbane and can empathize with the heat and humidity. Stay safe and keep hydrated. I hope that you consider one last look and maybe try to get permission to use the shortest possible route. And RIP ❤ to Shirley.. I'm still Living in the 70s 🥰
Thanks.... I've got a drone, however this area is one of those terrains that is highly vegetated and overgrown, so it really wouldn't have made much difference for me. Sometimes it's simply best to get feet on the ground and actually explore the terrain firsthand, which I absolutely am passionate about. I try to prep as much as I can from satellite imagery, and then I plunge into the bush. I'll get there on my next attempt, not long now. 😉
4:05 lol your right outside my friends place at woongooroo, he pointed out the site to me over a decade ago but ive forgotten now, don't think you would find it now, to much overgrowth of that spiny vine shit + that mountain has had alot of land slips from flooding in 2011 and again a few years back, very steep with alot of loose rock, i worked under it and man that place gets HOT in summer like a big ole radiator from all that rock, of your desperate i can most likely find out the site not that i think its accessible, im pretty sure that it was east of westvale toward nerrum creek kinda where you said at the end, maybe inbetween the vineyard and the private airstrip, o remember it took em a while to find him and i remember the stubid media saying he crashed somewhere at Mt Mee 🙄
Yep, I've got the site pin-pointed now - I'll get out there when this heat wave calms down. Does your mate's property back onto Mt Archer? Would be great to approach from the Air Strip side.
@@offtrackxplorer he is very close to it, woongooroo estate on Doyle's road, Phil and Gail if you call them im sure they will point you in the right direction, and also there is Christian retreat at the foot of the mountain "Archer retreat" end of myleema road i used to work at im sure they would let you go from there, or even call the airfield and ask them im sure they would let you too, this time of year i would be going up as early as possible that rock just gets too hot to be on
There is a video with Red going with a interviewer there, no helicopter, but Red did find a piece of the helicopter. I think it was a ABC programme. Shirley was a great singer and nice guy from what I read of him.
Very Tough Terrain, Cool Animals. Electrolytes Are Very Important When Hiking, You Can make Water With A Plastic Bag And A Rock, The Heat Will Create Humidity Like On Your Camera Lens And if You Have A Cup or plate You Can Make Water Using A Bag and A Rock. it takes a little time but it can save your life, I also carry a small bag of sea salt with me on every hike, very important sea salt is. I Wear Hiking Shoes, The shoes Give me more movement, boots make your Ankles Weak, Just My Opinion. Maybe Next Time Ride Your Electric Mountain Bike Up To The Top And Than lock it to a tree and Than Go Exploring, Save Time And Energy Maybe? The Yowie Is Real.
I love the sea salt idea, I'll have to include that with my gear. Boots are my preference only because I've rolled my ankles too many times with low cut shoes, so I like the support. I like your water, plastic bag and rock idea... I've seen that before. I have since gotten a good quality water filter which makes a big difference.
Who cares about the crash site. I like the part where you check you water reserve and decide to go back. After all I need to watch your video every day to battle morning sickness lol. Great video John!!
