SIAI-Marchetti S-211 - Italian flying trainer

- The SIAI-Marchetti S.211 is a light jet combat trainer aircraft created by the Italian company SIAI-Marchetti in the early 1980s. Equipped with one jet engine and having a take-off weight of about 3 tons, the aircraft was positioned as a lightweight and cheap in operation jet trainer. However, despite a number of advantages, the S-211 failed to win the love of aviators around the world.
However, the project continues to evolve, first as part of Aermacchi and now as part of the Leonardo model line under the M-345 index, as a lighter addition to the M-346 Master.

Fourteen months from design to operation it’s impressive.
Not when they take a BAE Hawk and simply raise the wings... just design a new carry through structure for the wing spars
@@Thinkflite simply raise the wings?!? Of course !!! BAE sent via Fax the hawk’s project to SIAI for easy modification …🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣!
Ok you win the “bullshit of the Day” …now you can return to rc models
@@stefanoloda5281 I work in aerospace, take it with a pinch of salt mate... Raising the wings is an easier task than designing a whole aircraft... its just simply is.
@@Thinkflite the Point is…m211 was a new project not a reverse engineering of BAE Hawk or modified “joint venture” project …( Maybe with similar aspect)
@@Thinkflite If it was that simple... than they should had very very smart engineers to design a so light airplane. A Hawk has an empty mass of about 4440-4480 kg, while the smaller S-211 is about 1800 - 1850 kg.
S-211 design conception started in mid '70, they waited till they had enough money to fund the project.
Lovely trainer jet. I remember sitting in one during our Singapore Air Force open house in the 1980s.
Most content creators only focus on frontline fighters. Covering jet trainers could become your edge over other creators. Please make more of it.
Greetings from Manila, Philippines! 🇵🇭
I've seen S-211 jets back when I lived in the Philippines.
We passed by Villamor Air Base during a field trip and saw those jets parked a few meters away. They seemed smaller than or about the same size as our bus.
Still being used by Philippine airforce.

There's some good ones on this video. 😂
Made me spat my coffee 😆
Welcome back, Italy)
Can you do a video on the MB-339 the PAN uses?
@@superj8502 that's A GOOD ONE

Your videos have always been informative, but I daresay this one was also highly entertaining, what with describing the S.211 as cute and an equally light-hearted description of Apple's founding and founders. Keep up the good work!
0:42 that exact jet, N270CF, was at Sun N Fun 2021 and I sat under an L39 right next to it while watching the Blue Angels. Kinda fun to see an aircraft I've seen in person on a TH-cam video like this.
It lives down in Palm Beach county and is frequently in Titusville FL. I think it's there now.
these planes have been used in combat air strikes against ISIS/ISIL here in the Philippines (Battle for Marawi), effective ground support/striker aircraft.
Your very good specialist knowledge paired with your dry humor is always fascinating and that's what I love about your videos.
Your host allowing you to present this aircraft to your viewers has a rather nice garage attached to his home.
You should see his car collection 😄
You just made my day!! Spasiba bolschoj!!
I've flown in the SF260, AWESOME AIRPLANE !
10:11 that's in Basa Air Base in the Philippines.
Always loved that plane. Love this trailer too. 3:20
We used those for aircraft to show in parades. Most countries do flyover on parades. We like to show our tax payers what they're paying for, and being able to have a part in it flying in the aircraft and benefits and perks not available in other countries.
Loved it, should really make a video about the M 346 next 😜
In Argentina we have a similar looking but slightly smaller trainer called IA-63 Pampa, really nice plane.
the Pampa is cuter, too
Kudos for your good pronunciation of almost all Italian names, including the SIAI Marchetti. You only missed the name of the Airport associated with their factory.
It’s Vergiate where the “gia” is pronounced like the Ja in Jamaica. It’s not far from the Malpensa airport and I was there few times for the MAV or Vergiate air show, at that time the Freccie Tricolori were still flying the G 91.
Yes. You may not be a native speaker but his English could do with quite a bit of work.
Great content and presentation. Thank you
Very good, as usual- - -thank you Sky for sharing!
What a great looking aircraft.
"tools for rough communication with the opponents.." hahahahaha I love this channel.
The plane shown at 12:34 on the timeline with revised rectangular air intakes looks cooler than the semicircular intakes on the original S-211. It's a fine looking jet.
what a beauty!
Such a beautiful plane. The Philippines Airforce uses armed versions of these jets dubbed as AS-211 Warriors
Flown this one. Really stable
Cute looking jet. I especially like the look of the latest version. It will be interesting to see the Italian National team flying them when they finally up-grade.

Hold on, can’t find my phone…
Here it is!
Great video sir. The South African Airforce used them for decades. It was know here as the Impala. I remember that the engine it used was a bit problematic, prone to flame outs and failure.
Regards from South Africa
Hello South Africa. I guess, the Impala is the Aermacchi MB-326 modification, not the S-211
@@flyerkiller5073 Yes, they also had a few of the 326K variants.
I love this channel both for the aviation info and because the narrator sounds just like Strongbad.
Its now a strike aircraft in our country :)
Reminds me of our Indian air forces, Intermediate jet trainer project.
A little bit late but here are some additional information about the AS-211 Warrior of the Philippine Air Force:
- After the F-5A/B Freedom Fighter's retirement in Philippine service, its avionics and subsystems were incorporated into the the S-211.
- They were upgraded to carry Paveway IIs via WiPak (like the OV-10) and some received glass cockpits.
- During an open house years ago, there are some AIM-9Bs mountee on their wing pylons together with Mk.82s.
- They're now removed from active combat service after the arrival of FA-50s and A-29B Super Tucano but still active in advance training role and as well as in maritime patrol.
- They were on their last legs as the Philippine Government didn't acquire those retired Singaporean S-211s, and the preferred replacement is the Korean KAI KT-1 Woongbi instead of S-211's successor: M-345 HET.
also additionally some of the AS-211 were fitted with Multi-Function Displays and i think a Radar Warning Receiver fi im not mistaken
Nice design 👌 👍 👏
Nice video
Flew the S211 #386 with Victory Aviation. Amazing jet trainer!
Wonderful
I bet that single exhaust reduces adverse yaw in the case of a single engine failure. I like it
Your voice 🔥🔥🔥😅
In fact, it's my brother's voice)
@Lord Sidious Ireland practically has no air force....
@Lord Sidious that sucks. Practically still a colony of the British. Hey, thank you for serving your country. I've seen training of the Irish Armed forces, you guys pretty tough
@Lord Sidious Hello sir or My Lord. If you served in the Irish Defence Forces (you didn't state what branch) do you ever watch Nicholas Moran aka The_Cheiftan? th-cam.com/video/JhYFDF7SJHg/w-d-xo.html He now serves in the US but did serve in the Irish forces.
Now Sir I must take issue with you, you are close enough to know better. There Is The Royal Saudi Air Force, The Royal Thai Air Force and The Royal Netherlands Air Force. Britain has only The Royal Air Force, just as it has The Royal Navy. There is no British Royal Air Force. Now admittedly we do have The British Army, but we like to do things that confuse the estranged colonies, the uppity Europeans and the lessor peoples of the world.
Regarding your lament of an effective Irish Air Corps (See you other nations have to put a country before the name of your forces!), well jets don't come cheap for a country with a limited population, but I do understand that The Dáil Éireann has plans to increase the population of The Republic but as to whether that increase in population might increase available military funds, I'm at a loss.
Whilst not jets, OK they are jets but only turboprops, have you thought you might get a good deal on uprating your PC-9Ms to A-29 Super Tocanos en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_314_Super_Tucano
Terry Taliban might well be up for a deal, and these trainers would also provide weapons training and possible ground support if the Irish UN troops are set up to fail by the UN once again. I understand your ex Taoiseach's family was from that part of the world, though he might be the wrong religion (If he has one) and "A Little Light On His Feet" to carry out direct negotiations.
All said with tongue firmly in my cheek.
Eagerly waiting for your video on an124. Thanks
i see you're acquainted with Mauricio. Did you get to pilot or at least fly in one of his 211's?
Maybe you should slso mention that in the phillipine air force the s-211 was also known as " the widow maker". Well the moniker speaks for itself.
This is also used as light fighter jet of the PAF (Philippine Air Force). Used against MILF Rebels in the Mindanao Region backed in the 2010s (no, not that MILF you used get pleasure)
The design of the bird is good it have some more space for bigger engine.
i love trainers
The M345 actually succeeded and become the replacement of the MB339, to which it lost the contract in 1979.
nice jet trainter 👍
Don’t forget Ghibili’s Red Pig is flying a flying boat from the same company.
In fantasy it is called SIAI S.21 "Folgore" but it is a mix: the closest real life SIAI design was the biplane S.12, curiously enough much closer was the Macchi M.33 while "Folgore" is the nickname of another of the Macchi designs, one of the most famous, the MC.202.
BTW although it might be just a coincidence "Ghibli" was the nickname of a Caproni design, the CA.309, while the pirates band name "Mammaiuto" was the unofficial nickname of a CANT design, the CANT Z.501 officially "Gabbiano"(seagull)
Where are those houses ? It would be great to live there !
I think it's Florida
@@flyerkiller5073 Yes you are right , it is in Florida but it is hard to tell exactly where.
It shows the sad state of the Philippine Air Force. Operating a cheap trainer jet as a air defense fighter. Too much corruption prevent us from buying a dedicated fighter aircraft. Good thing is our brand new FA-50PH is fairly capable but that alone is not enough for dealing with serious threats. We cross our fingers that we may aquire the Gripen or F-16V.
I do keep asking, Skyships could you do a kilonewton to lbs force conversion, if only as a subtitle. I can do km to knots, kg to lb and metres to feet in my head but have to stop the film to check the engine thrust *11.1 kN = 2,495 or 2,500 lbs force. 15.4 kN = 3,462 lb force*
Not as relevant as it was, but a great "Bang for Bucks" aircraft, the Mitsubishi mu-2. Considered dangerous by many until she was flown properly. Love to see you cover this aircraft.
Maybe I'll make subtitles. All this different standard measures make video a bit boring
@@SkyshipsEng Thanks in anticipation. I didn't say so at the time, as I hadn't finished watching, but great film as always. Different content creators have different unique selling points. With respect to aircraft, I watch from Blancolirio to the very fact dense, Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles or just Joluqua Malta for Malta/British based post-war aircraft film. I await your next film as always.
Oh, that's cutie!
@3:20 If the background could be edited out, that would make a nice pic or scene for a movie
Thanks for another awesome video Sky! thoroughly enjoyed it. Question for the experts from a non-pilot here. Why starting the pilot training with a prop aircraft like a PC-9 and not a turbine engine plane like an S-211? Does anybody know what was the price tag of both models and the operating costs?
Thanks!
I think props are much more economical than jets and as a basic training they are enough
Nice aircraft. However the italian Frecce Tricolori Team has made a decision for the M346 Master, now.
Terribles similitudes al IA 63 - Pampa. Tienen una aerodinámica hermosa. 👍🏻😃
Cute!
I'll take mine with the original old-school instruments, thanks. And maybe a velcro pouch to hold any loose iPhones.
sky! make a video about the SK60/saab 105 :D
Great video! Any idea what it costs to buy and operate? I have it on good authority that an L-39 can be bought for $200,000, and flown for about $2000/hr. And that's the problem with jets!
I just saw one for $285K
There is one for sale now on private market for 899k USD$
I am not complaining, but I am curious why you selected this particular jet to cover over so many others. I have never even heard of it. Why this, and not the Dassault Alphajet, or even the MB.339, for example?
Although I think I am in agreement with the person who commented below, one of my favorite things about your channel is that you cover airliners and Soviet/Russian aircraft that don't get a lot of coverage otherwise. I think it is a good idea for you to focus on things like training aircraft, maybe transports, recon and patrol aircraft, airliners, civilian aircraft, etc. There are already tons of videos about the Eurofighter and the American fighters.
On the other hand, the famous aircraft probably generate a lot more online traffic, so I don't blame you if you do want to cover them. I just know my favorite videos are the ones about aircraft I don't see very often anywhere else.
差點跟台灣合作那款嗎
As far as I understand, a single project with the Russians was once divided and each went its own separate path - the Yak-130 and this aircraft.
Yak 130's twin-brother is Aermacchi M-345. This one is Marchetti 346. Regards 🇮🇹
01:06 if it stands for Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia, then the first letter in English is pronounced 'ess' (S) and not 'seee' (C).
It looks like a high/mid wing BAE Hawk
Thumbs down for calling it a "funny" trainer. This is a capable, sleek jet that's serves a purpose.

A great plane for private pilots who want to fly a baby fighter.
Can civilians learn to fly this?

According to rumours, the RAF are about to order a new jet trainer from a brand new company. I looked up their address and it looks like a house (I guess it's a REALLY new company!)
Jet as in turbojet or a Hawk replacement. No idea what address you have found. Now it is not a jet aircraft but the 1980s story of how the MOD chose to specify a specialist rifle built by three guys in a shed and the specialist subcontractor commissioned to manufacture it, who knew better, nearly killed the project:th-cam.com/video/Z-j3Isreqbg/w-d-xo.html Then again look up Frank Whittle's relationship with the Rover company who were to manufacture his jets and how Rolls-Royce saved that and why Rolls-Royce have a jet manufacture plant in the sleepy town of Barnoldswick in Lancashire. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
