What If We Terraformed the Moon?

  • What if we colonized and lived on the Moon? Obviously, we can’t just pack our stuff and move there today. But what if we terraformed it - reshaped it into an Earth’s image? How long would it take us to turn our natural satellite into a habitable place? How would this Earth-like Moon look? Would this even be possible?

He says we could terraform moon by just bombarding it with water, reactivating its core/making a solar shield, and it wouldnt even make huge difference except going faster..
First, moon doesnt have enough mass NOR a core to be a hospitable planet.
Second, Even if you DID suceed making it a little earth, it means Moon know has a atmosphere along with changed rotation speed and rotation course.
Meaning, the life on the earth would drastically change.
Coastal cities would either be destroyed or new coastlines would appear.
Islands would sunk and new ones would emerge.
Entire habitat around the world caused by any form of water would have been changed.
Not just that, If Moon's stable course is interrupted in such way, that could collide with earth or wonder off into the solar system.
With our *current* technology, making moon a habitable planet is both not possible AND VERY dangerous.

Honestly I feel if the human species can stick around as long at insect species have at least. We would become the very thing we fear to other alien life until a bigger badder alien has to come and check us.
Its a shame how greed destroys us. They are really talking terraforming other planets because of resources & space when in truth we have enough of both. Its just that the 1% hoard all earth resources as well as livable land.

Without protection, a lunar atmosphere would last from ten to a hundred thousand years without replentishment before it became unstable. This is according to Dr. Von Drak, whose 1962 study on planetary atmospheric dynamics at Rice University is still considered a definitive work. The lunar gravity is still barely strong enough to retain an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature. It would need a means of protection, though, to remain viable over geologic time.

The moon’s orbit affects tides, but rotation does not. Their idea is not to change the moon’s orbit but rather to make it spin faster.
“Tidally locked” means the same side of the moon always faces Earth. Since the orbit would stay the same but the rotation would change, the moon would show us different sides and therefore no longer be tidally locked. It would still create tides on earth.
Take a look at the difference between rotation and orbit and you’ll have the answers to your questions.

Fun idea, but there are some major problems that would make this impossible anyways:
    1. The gravity is only 1.67 G, which means it wouldn't be able to hold on to an atmosphere dense enough to breathe.
    2. The Moon doesn't have a molten core, so there would be no magnetic field unless we made one ourselves. It is literally a geologically dead rock.
    3. IF we somehow got enough water on the moon for oceans to form, they would evaporate away due to the lack of an atmosphere.
    4. You couldn't make the moon spin by just throwing rocks at it. You would need to angle them so they struck the side of the moon to even try. But this wouldn't last long as it would end up tidally locked to Earth again anyways.
    5. One other side-effect is that if you do all this to the moon, you will change how bright it would be in the night sky. Think of all the plant and animal life on Earth that would be affected if the moon shined differently.
I know it is just a thought experiment, but I figured I would mention some real issues we would face.

    • @entelin
      @entelin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@SFSAtlas It would take awhile to address every stupid thing they said, but just to pick one: bombarding the moon with enough material to cause it to spin and turn the core molten such to create a dynamo and magnetic field would also destroy the whole surface of earth with debris. The change to the mass of the moon and therefore it's orbit would have tidal effects on earth, possibly even cause earthquakes, and other issues. The new source of magnetic field would undoubtedly have effects on our magnetic field as well. But it's also effectively pointless, because with the low gravity of the moon any atmosphere we create would be stripped off by the solar wind anyway.

I have looked at a lot of videos about colonizing the moon. And I haven't found any with my same ideas. I think we should set up a moon colony on earth. We should have inflatable domes, which we cover with 3D printers with simulated moon mortar. The domes should be connected to each other by inflatable tunnels covered with simulated moon mortar. There should be living quarters, hydroponic green houses, gardens with garden soil for recreational gardening, a 5 acre pasture with one inch of garden soil and one inch of grass turf, a park with artificial turf and with small sections of real grass turf, and maybe even a very small zoo. All the domes will have plastic floors so no water is lost. Condensation forming on the ceilings will be drained into the water supply. All the domes will be blown up with compressed air from earth and will have a refresh system, which will refresh the air and maintain the air pressure. Humidity, Temperature will be maintained by humidifiers, heaters, fans and coolers. Light will be provided by multi-color LEDs, mostly white. Power will be supplied at first by solar power, and later by nuclear or fusion power. There will be a bull, a cow, two sheep, and two goats, two chickens, two turkeys, two fish, and two rabbits. There will also be pets, two dogs, two cats, two bunnies, etc. (and maybe a small zoo) All of this will be set up by astronauts and robots before the colonist arrive.
The first colonist will be 5 fathers and 5 mothers, and 90 babies. The parents will be good parents, gardeners, farmers, zoo keepers, teachers, etc.. During the first two years an exact duplicate facility will be built on the moon. When the babies are two years old, they will move to the moon and live on the moon. Or if it is proven that they will be too young to travel to the moon than the facility on earth will be added to, to accommodate 10 more parents and 90 more babies. The two year olds would move into the new addition. Every two years the facility will be either added to, or 100 people will move to the moon. This plan will allow the kids to grow up in the isolation of the colony, and will make it easier for them to live in the isolation of the colony on the moon. And will allow them to grow up on the moon and be better able to adjust to the lower gravity on the moon, although some artificial gravity maybe eventually provided. This artificial gravity will especially be good for the parents. The kids will have everything in the facility to keep them occupied and entertained. Also they could have some books, movies, games, etc., especially adapted for them, being careful not give them anything that would make them feel isolated.
After 20 years there could be 2000 people living on the moon, most of whom grew up on the moon. This program could be speeded up so in 20 years there could be 4000, 6000, or 8000 people living on the moon.
This program could be simultaneously done to colonize Mars so we could have 2000 people on the Moon and Mars at the same time. For the moon we could send supplies every month, but for Mars we could only send supplies every 26 months. So I suggest we send 10, 20, or 30 rockets to Mars every 26 months all at the same time.
We could have several refueling stations along the way to mars and orbiting mars so rockets could refuel along the way to mars and right before landing on mars so the empty rocket would have enough fuel to take off again, refuel in space and return to Earth. Eventually the moon and Mars could export minerals or small expensive items that were assembled on the moon or Mars, like jewelry, iphones, iwatches, etc. Or grown on the moon like caviar, marijuana, etc.

Terraforming the moon sounds far more viable then just mining it, if you can make the moon liveable you will have more people willing to fly and settle there and have all the farming, mining, etc all you want couse the people ho migrate there might stay there all there life since is just across the Earth and still be capable of communication with there family, even going as far as inviting there family to live there also
Not everybody likes to travel outside there country, especially in a planet that is not hospital for humans, but if you make it home like and have flora and fauna to make it a new home you will have a ship full of pioneers willing to start a new world

@Jagjit Singh Why would they have to be strict? A human, hitching a ride, needs no qualifications at all - he is just a passenger. All that a passenger needs is to be healthy enough to survive the acceleration - nothing else. And pretty much every human without some heart problems can in fact do it, no biggie. You cannot take a requirements and training that astronauts get and say that the simple human on Luna would require the same - he needs no more qualifications that living on Earth requires - except the mentioned health part. But acceleration is not that great so more than 90% of humans would not have a problem.
