    I got to see a couple Alexa 35s this week. The mini LF viewfinder supported HDR monitoring this whole time, now unlocked with the new camera. The ES modes do some noise sampling and cancelling magic, that combined with the audio module could make it the king of documentary cameras for users like the BBC. The new app will be useful (you can grab screenshots straight from camera to phone). The SDI 2 with return video will be highly useful for productions with VFX or compositing. It is great to be able to use 35mm cinema lenses again. Master anamorphics are back!

    I had the luck to test the alexa 35 this week, and i asked about the nds. They told me that was because of the camera size. If they had more internal nd filters it would became an LF size wise! And with the 35 they want to mantain the mini LF size.

    hii in depth cine...i have a question :
    so you have a super 35 sensor built in alexa 35 and it can shoot 4.6 k and it uses the whole surfaces of the sensor
    my first question is :
    when i want to shoot 1080p with alexa 35 , does it use a small part of the sensor only for this to achieve ?
    what if it use the whole surface of the sensor for shooting lower resolutions like 1080 p and 720 but instead it will have bigger pixel size,bigger than 6.5 micro meter
    is it possible that the camera merges some 4 pixels together so they represent one pixel to shoot 720p for example?

    • @christykail3314
      @christykail3314 ปีที่แล้ว

      When shooting HD the camera uses a sensor area of 4096 x 2304, most but not all of the full sensor. It will downsample from that resolution, so yes, it will create an average of a certain number of recorded photocites to create one recorded pixel.

      Good point. AFAIK, the reason it took nearly 12 years for them to deliver a new sensor was just that: increasing resolution without sacrificing DR and highlight rolloff (both of which ended up being superior to Alev III). Does the dynamic range stops measurements in cinema camera and stills camera the same? Or is it just manufacturer's claim?
    In DXOMark the top 5 stills cameras with the highest dynamic range has 14.8 stops of DR, 4 of them are FF, and 1 MF. This super-35 sensor has 2.2 stops more? I know it's down to the sensor quality and algorithm, but generally speaking the larger the sensor area, the better DR you can get. Is that why this Arri will cost as much as a mansion?

    • @marianoguy
      @marianoguy ปีที่แล้ว

      it is manufacturer's claim. it's hard to tell behind all the marketing mumbo jumbo and specs but most of what we use to judge the performance of a camera on paper does not always translate into how well it manages to produce an image. it's like you said, there are indeed differences between consumer cameras and these type of cameras for production environments beyond what the simple "specs" say.

    • @Eyeofkamau
      @Eyeofkamau 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s all a matter of sensor technology. The Fuji XH2s is APSC and sees 14.9 stops of DR (15 stops pretty much) and costs $2500. It has more DR than most full frame cameras, and even many cinema cameras. That is beyond the claims, rather realworld tests. Unlike many companies that will boast 14-15 stops, but don’t get anything near that in the real world because of sensor readout… the XH2s has a 14bit readout (which used to be reserved for high end cinema cameras), which means it comfortably handles 14 stops of DR.
      I say this to say, it’s more a matter of sensor technology than sensor size. There are plenty of FF cameras that have very poor DR
      Also, yes, DR in photo and video is measured differently.

    • @matthijsblomjous3671
      @matthijsblomjous3671 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@walmartpimp2 it comes down to a bunch of things, really. for starters 8k is very much overkill, as cinemas still use a 2k resolution, only some have 4k capacity. 8k may be nice for digital zooming and reframing, but on top level productions I'm not sure that's much of an issue. many top cinematographers will also tell you that at some point, resolution just does not matter that much anymore, and that is where I think Arri is considered to have the most beautiful looking image. Arri doesn't chase specs like other brands, instead they make sure that the specs they use are fully optimised and create the most beautiful image possible. last thing I can think of right now is that 8k requires so much processing power and storage that it's too much of a hassle. the negatives outweigh the positives in Arri's view.

    The thing of it being cut with existing Alexa Cameras makes no sense when you hear Arri saying that the process of working with the image in postproduction is different because the Log Curve is different. That to me means that yeah, you can cut it with other cameras from Arri, but you'll have to work to make them look similar. That's the same as working to make it look similar to a Venice or a RED. If you can't use conversion LUTs or Resolve Color space transform with it the same way as you did with previous Arri Cameras, I don't see how that is something they are selling. It makes no sense.

      It's been so interesting seeing all the hype of the cinematography channels for the Alexa 35 but for us in the professional industry the main response has been a mix of excitement for the colour, but also skepticism as there are some disappointments in this design. Bad timing seeing as the Venice 2 just came out and the LF's and Mini's sit on the shelves collecting dust while the Sony Venice is currently experiencing an industry shortage.
