Driving Through (München) Munich Germany. Starting at BMW (Welt) World parking garage I then exit and drive to the left a short distance to show the BMW Factory size and then do a U turn exiting BMW World the Corporate Building on left (the large round building) and BMW Welt on right side. Then drive through the city of München to the Marienplatz parking garage directly underneath Marienplatz / Viktualienmarkt which is considered the heart of Munich.
Munich (/ˈmjuːnɪk/; also /ˈmjuːnɪx/ in British English; German: München, pronounced [ˈmʏnçn̩] ( listen), Bavarian: Minga [ˈmɪŋ(ː)ɐ]) is the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, on the banks of River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, and the 12th biggest city of the European Union, with a population of above 1.5 million. The Munich Metropolitan Region is home to 5.8 million people.
The city is a major centre of art, advanced technologies, finance, publishing, culture, innovation, education, business, and tourism in Germany and Europe and enjoys a very high standard and quality of living, reaching #1 in Germany and #4 worldwide according to the 2015 Mercer survey. According to the Globalization and World Rankings Research Institute Munich is considered an alpha-world city, as of 2015.
The name of the city is derived from the Old/Middle High German term Munichen, meaning "by the monks". It derives from the monks of the Benedictine order who ran a monastery at the place that was later to become the Old Town of Munich; hence the monk depicted on the city's coat of arms. Munich was first mentioned in 1158. From 1255 the city was seat of the Bavarian Dukes. Black and gold-the colours of the Holy Roman Empire-have been the city's official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian, when it was an imperial residence. Following a final reunification of the Wittelsbachian Duchy of Bavaria, previously divided and sub-divided for more than 200 years, the town became the country's sole capital in 1506.
Catholic Munich was a cultural stronghold of the Counter-Reformation and a political point of divergence during the resulting Thirty Years' War, but remained physically untouched despite an occupation by the Protestant Swedes; as the townsfolk would rather open the gates of their town than risk siege and almost inevitable destruction. Like wide parts of the Holy Roman Empire, the area recovered slowly economically.
Having evolved from a duchy's capital into that of an electorate (1623), and later a sovereign kingdom (1806), Munich has been a major European centre of arts, architecture, culture and science since the early 19th century, heavily sponsored by the Bavarian monarchs. In 1918, during the German Revolution, the ruling house of Wittelsbach, which governed Bavaria since 1180, was forced to abdicate in Munich and a short-living socialist republic was declared.
In the 1920s, Munich became home to several political factions, among them the NSDAP, which was founded in the city in 1920. Though the first attempt of the Nazi movement to overtake the German government in 1923 with the Beer Hall Putsch, which was stopped by the Bavarian police in Munich with gunfire, the Nazis declared the city after their rise to power to be Hauptstadt der Bewegung (lit.: "Capital of the movement"). During World War II, Munich was heavily bombed and more than 50% of the entire city and up to 90% of the historic centre were destroyed.

So many free parking spaces! I was there as a tourist driving in 1993 and had to leave my car about three blocks away from where I was staying . It was impossible to find a free space. After a couple of days, I left the car in one spot and used the public transport for the two weeks I was there.

I like how the road and bicycle lanes are designed and well marked. While we can't seem to get it right, here in Calgary, we could sure learn from this example, instead of wasting so much money for traffic research and design ideas! We seem to be reinventing the wheel on a lot of things, instead of just looking to Europe for a lot of great ideas, especially public transit!

The buildings that survived the RAF bombing campaign have lots of German character, the modern ones are just bland boring characterless boxes with lots of windows.

    • @fishmghee1105
      @fishmghee1105 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Puzzoozoo exactly! A country that is just filled with modern architecture speaks of a bland and inhuman approach to architecture. I’m from England, which was bombed heavily in the war and one thing I can say is that many cities fall from grace once you bring in this architecture. Before the war, pretty much all of Europe kept their traditional architectural style and it spoke of the heritage from which their nation was born. If we just build bland and square buildings, not only does it make us feel miserable and unproud, it makes every city look the same; if there are people who read this I ask you to promote traditional architectural designs all across Europe and especially the worst offending ones.

    • @fishmghee1105

Its so sad that all german cities and munich got destroyed in ww2. They were so beautiful and full of history. Of history of hundreds of years... but the british and the us americans had to destroy it for no reason. But even than munich and german cities are still beautiful. They built all new. Strong people!

@@yousifu6495I love Omanis. I'm just comparing green areas in both countries. I'm originally from Turkey living in Kuwait. I feel so depressive without parks, trees and green areas. Turkey has more green areas due to the geography but still so less than Germany.

I'm going to Munich on business for three days this week (City Center). I have no plan. I don't speak a word of German. But Germany, like most of Europe, is far more multilingual than America, so I am going to trust that I can get around. Gonna find an Uber from the Airport to City Center. Then kinda play it by ear from there. ;-)

All I wish is that some parts of the country (and every other country in Europe, for that matter) remain as charming, old-fashioned, and GERMAN as its namesake. Being an American, I love diversity, but to an extent. If there are people out there - which there are who only want everyone else to tolerate them and adjust to their culture but will not tolerate nor adjust to anyone else' culture, then those individuals should live isolated from everyone else, in their own country, and under their own government, so they can be immersed in their own culture and rules and not have to deal with others coming in and trying to change things up... like they may intend to do when they're entering Everyone else' country...Oh, and I hope I didn't offend anyone by saying all this, but as an American I will exercise my right to Freedom of Speech, and as someone who still believes in logic and sense, I think this needs to be said:)

America, unfortunately, is very complex when it comes to race / racism. In some ways, we've come a long way in accepting others' differences; in other ways, we're still very much divided. But one thing that will always divide people in the U.S. and abroad is religion, and that was the point I was trying to make...

Shevandy 55 Every time I see a fucking American on the comments they always bring racism, diversity, cultural or religious subject that is completely different from the video. Please keep your opinion for yourself, and just enjoy the video...
