As someone who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 18, but showed signs as early as 8; thank you. Thank you for taking your time to understand your son more and educate yourself on how you can help him and yourself. I appreciate you.

It must be very early in Oz! Early bird gets the worm. I'm an ex psych patient trying to make sense of the treatment I received which was brutal at times. I wish I could just have a conversation with the psychiatrist who treated me but that's not possible. Your videos are as close as I can get. I like seeking out learning about the brain. I would also be interested in videos on medical ethics. There are many medical ppl in my family but the subject of my admission is so painful for everyone. Also is there much research on how to keep psych patients entertained and happy?

Hey Dr. Syl! I really enjoy your channel a lot. I have a Bipolar Disorder 1 and BPD. It’s an interesting combination to say the least 😂😅 I was wondering if you could talk about having that combo in a future video? Thank you always for your informative videos 😊

love the videos, I work in Old Age Psychiatry in Ireland but hoping to join you in Australia in the next year or so. I enjoy all of your videos but particularly those that show glimpses of the job and life of a psych trainee there. Really enjoy the chats with coffee and experts. thanks for putting in the effort and making youtube a richer place!

I have bipolar, ocd, fnd and sensory processing disorder so I am here for information as the real life psychiatrists don't have much time to go into details, also the neurologist and psychiatrist don' t seem to give a holistic picture. It's all separate whereas I feel it's connected. Also my psych is gruff and curt so I need an imaginary more affable one too.:) I like the glimpses into professional life as well. This as a great video, it amazes me how people can just sleep at will.

Hey Dr. Syl - I am pleased to hear you are taking some time off to be young. I do wish you will prioritise those intense connections one makes at that age. I wonder if you'd make a video about Avoidant Personality Disorder and maybe order PDs. I am in treatment for it, current metacognitize-interpersonal and have also been in schema therapy. I think it's one of the least known, yet most prevalent PDs out there.

Hi Dr. Syl, I enjoy your videos as one who is studying to be a clinical social worker, but also as one who is diagnosed with schizoeffective disorder. I appreciate your insights on different aspects of mental illness. It has given me better understanding of my own disorder. I would like to continue to see more detail into mental illness as well as different treatment methods and clinical approaches.

Dr Syl, please set that flashing light to a continuous on or off setting. Its a cool name sign, but I couldn't watch the video and process what you were saying at the same time because of the distraction. I am Austic and have sensory processing challenges. Hope all goes well with those results 🙏

it's actually not flashing in real life! it's problem with neon lights and the frame rate of the camera which makes it look that way.. I will trouble shoot it. Thanks for the comment!

I like all kinds of videos on this channel, but if I had to pick my favorite types it would be scrubs reactions, analysis (of other videos) and the interviews you did with other professionals. vlogs are always good and the podcast idea is a good one, too.
for your market research, i'm around your age working as a mathematician/computer scientist in public health. i am also personally affected by mental health (and some people around me), but also generally interested in the topic.

I was a cna in a assisted living place and i tried nightshift and i couldnt do it. It made my depression worse for some reason. I ended up working dayshift which i loved. I really enjoyed my job until i had to get let go because i was having a episode and they said my behavior was too out of control. I have lost alot due to mental illness.

Here is a big big question. What are psychiatrists seeing in terms of mental health reactions to wars (now seeing images in real time, or close), and its traumatic effects? Perhaps something we see less of in Australia, as this has been a country that has lived in peace for some decades now. That said, I do believe there is much about today that is horrifying for many. I dont know if you get to see any refugees fleeing war? My opinion is that war is the most traumatising thing one can do to a human being, and today the effects are being felt around the world. Any tips on managing mental health during these times? I think it might be harder for many with depression or other mental health diagnosis, as they are often more sensitive to the effects of trauma on others. Please feel free to challenge, contradict my thoughts. I think one of the great things about channels like TH-cam is that we can respond to world events in such a way as to help safeguard our mental health.
An example was during the pandemic, where many were saying the pandemic caused major mental health problems for many. My feeling is this is not quite true. I believe the pandemic actually unmasked what was already there, tbh. We were less able to distract ourselves quite so easily. The exceptions being, you suffered loss of income/job or lost someone to the illness.
I think a big advantage of looking at the big picture trends in mental health is that I think it helps people not feel quite so alone, which is an issue many mental health patients struggle with.
