Saw Pokey last night at Koko's in Camden Town. You really need to see this guy live to appreciate just how great he is. Looks like Hank Snow (he even played him in the recent TV series about Sam Phillips) sounds like a cross between young Elvis and Hank Williams. Just great.
Great look, great songs and very cool guitar work but this band needs a singer to match the level of the song. The vocals drop off so much that he sounds like he's not in the band but actually someone who knows the song and just happens to be singing along. It is disappointing because there are actually good songs here. Close, but it won't keep me listening
When these recordings are made, they pull it off the soundboard. They set the soundboard so all sounds good at the venue. Unless it's mastered and balanced out for video, it usually sounds unbalanced. I am sure in the venue it all was well. There are times he's yelling in the mic and you can't hear it over the instruments. That's not him.
