Same plot line as in movie Scarface 1932 (1983 remake is more fictional) , based loosely on Al Capone , start small , make a fortune and go down in flames .
US has 14 cosa nostra families, latest that ended this year was Milwaukee Mafia (Balistrieri family) in year 2000 US had still 25 mafia families.
Only ones made movies from are New York City five families and Chicago outfit.(Al Capone) .
Godfather movie is more fictional, they had a real mafia enforcer on set making sure they dont insult anyone and he got role in the movie too.

Theres a comedy movie that essentially picks up where the end of this film ends. Its called My Blue Heaven, and its about Henry Hill being in the witness relocation program. It stars Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and Joan Cusack. Its tons of fun, and Steve Martin is hilarious in it.
Came out the same year as Goodfellas. I think it came out just a few weeks or so prior to Goodfellas.

From basically the first minute of the reaction I kept talking to Kamilla like she could hear me. She said something like “it’s a love story” and I said “nope! It’s definitely not a love story” and then the preoccupation with the fact that he was cheating on Karen had me thinking that she may not enjoy the movie but she managed to still enjoy it. As for the white Christmas tree and really tacky stuff like that from the 1970’s well it was everywhere and my parents did have some of it but thankfully no Christmas trees that weren’t green.

@Centane Hi Kamilla, you were talking about the difference between the prisons in Norway and the USA. For 69 homicides, Breivik got (just?) 21 years (ouch!). What Europeans (and most Americans) don't understand about the US is that we have so much crime because we have so many criminals.
People in low crime countries seem to forget that they are not immune to evil. 21 years and then "preventative detention"?! That's a flowery euphemism for what we in the US call "life in prison without the possibility of parole."
Love your show and your accent.

On the DVD commentary (remember those?) Henry Hill is asked what his first response was when he heard Tommy was dead...without skipping a beat he said "relieved"...even though they were friends, Tommy scared everyone. Henry cheated on Karen with Janice and then he cheated on Janice with Sandy. The real-life Tommy was even worse than the one in the movie. Martin Scorsese's admiration for gangsters comes through in his movies like this one. His gangsters have real problems you can identify with and you are meant to sympathize with them. Francis Ford Coppola has complete and utter contempt for gangsters. You are meant to see them as hypocrites who comport themselves as businessmen in suits but who are slowly losing their souls until there's no recognizable humanity left in them. You are not meant to sympathize with them.

@@georgezee5173 No doubt they are great. And great for the same reasons. *My bias comes from the dislike of viewers living vicariously through the criminal characters, and "rooting for the bad guy" for mob movies.* From the Godfather, to Scarface, to Breaking Bad, it's disturbing to me how easily a writer can get a viewer to root for a violent criminal. Goodfellas is the worst because the very story is about a guy lamenting that he couldn't be a criminal anymore. Worse than that, it's based on mostly true accounts (although I accuse the real Henry Hill of telling the story in such a way that makes him look more innocent than he actually was). In contrast, the degenerate characters in Casino all get exactly what they earned.

My mother and my two oldest sisters have María as their first name although nobody calls them María at all, only the second name. Here's the deal: Tommy, Jimmy, and Henry Hill were not MADE MEMBERS of a Mafia Family, they were what is known as ASSOCIATES. They were linked to a particular Mafia Family, but were not members of it. As such they had to get their crew chief's blessing for any illegal activity they were planning, in their case Paul Cicero, and after they scored they kicked a percentage of their ill gotten gains back up to Paulie. For this tribute they got protection from any other Mafia Family and access to whatever "juice" their family had lined up, i.e. lawyers, corrupt judges and politicians. They lured Tommy to a certain place at a certain time with the promise that he was going to be "made", i.e. inducted into the Family as a full fledged member, but he was never going to be made, they just lured him there to kill him quietly because of his killing of a made member, Billy Bats, "and a lot of other things". Also, Paulie told them all no dealing in drugs, the chances of being caught were too high and the penalties for a conviction were too severe. Henry was in deep shit with Paulie when he got busted with a bunch of cocaine in his girlfriend's apartment because he did what Paulie told him not to do. Also, Henry was in trouble with Jimmy because Jimmy didn't want Paulie finding out he was in the drug racket with Henry. It would have been a death sentence for Jimmy as well. Also also, it always tickles me when a woman reacts to this movie and they rock along pulling for the bad guy till, "WAIT! WHAT?? HE'S CHEATING ON HIS WIFE?!?!" Ummmm, yeah, these are bad people. These are not "consider the consequences" kinda folks, they're not the "save up my money till I can afford to buy something nice" kinda folks, these are not "be true to your word" kinda folks, these are "see, want, TAKE" kinda folks, they are "the rules were meant for others" kinda folks. Delayed gratification is not their style. That's why when the shit went down Henry was broke and needed that batch of cocaine. He spent the money he got from his various criminal activities as fast as it came in. Having a wife AND a mistress is just another element of their "I want it all now" kinda personality. In the Mafia having a mistress is so common that there is even a special name for the side girlfriend: a goomar or goomah (the spellings differ but the job description is the same). And don't feel TOO bad for Karen Hill, she was just as involved in criminal activity as was her husband. They were a team. A FUCKED UP team, but a team none the less.

The Hill family was first hidden in Omaha, Nebraska. He was soon selling dope outside the gate to Offutt Air Force Base, which is a bit concerning as it's the headquarters for what was then known as the Strategic Air Command, in charge of all the nukes. He got made in Omaha and the family was moved somewhere down south before sundown.
Much later, after he'd been kicked out of the program, He wound up in, of all places, North Platte, Nebraska. I knew a guy there who knew him pretty well and he said Hill was full of it. It wasn't long before he got busted for dealing there.

My father lived that kind of life; and my mother was fine with it. The thing that kills me about Henry is that he wasn't honest with Karen; in that life those are the rules. Your wife is home with the kids, that's your family, those are the people you love, and those are the people that matter. The deal though is you choose a wife carefully because she's you're one and only. You don't lie to her about other women when/if anything happens. You don't have to tell your wife everything about business, it's up to you where you want to draw the line but at the end of the day it's not just your business, it's everybody you work with. But you, your wife, your family, that's your business, your responsibility and you don't gaslight her on that; not ever. - Also, great reaction!

Like Henry was a small time nobody and half this movie is mostly made up according to Michael Franzese (one of the guys named in early in the movie) and Sammy the Bull. Still great movie and love your reactions!

Hello Kamilla!😊 Yes, The Godfather is a trilogy with the third film being made many years later.😉 "Casino" (1995) is like Goodfellas in Vegas. It is also based on a true story, from the same director (Martin Scorsese), and several actors from this film return in different roles.😉 You should check it out sometime when you are in the mood for another good gangster film. The driver Stacks is a cameo by Samuel L. Jackson.😉 Tommy killed Morris with an ice pick which was a common weapon in the mob. They were never going to make Tommy, it was just a setup.😉Pauly was an old time Italian gangster, drugs & prostitution were forbidden. It was very important to maintain a stable family in the mob. A disgruntled wife could snitch to the cops. The character known as Jimmy Conway here also died in prison. Henry & Karen were kicked out of witness protection (WITSEC) after several drug violations. Henry Hill was very active on the Internet years prior to his death, after all his enemies had died. The film is based on the book "Wiseguy" which is the real name these mob guys were known by. Great reactions to this classic gangster film, Kamilla!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻P.S. - You look very nice in your festive outfit!🌹

Godfather is a totally different vibe. It isn't based on a true story but is based on reality of the American Mafia in the 40's and 50's. It's based on the novel by Mario Puzo who was an academic scholar who studied Italian American culture. He grew up in a neighborhood populated with Mafia guys.
After a modest career writing scholarly books, he decided to write a sensational novel based on what he had seen growing up and on Italian American culture in order to be able to leave some money to his children. It was a huge hit, being the first look inside the Mafia that most Americans saw. It really set the tone for future films about organized crime.
In fact, it's been said that real Mafia guys started emulating what they saw in the movie!

Godfather: the godfather is fact + fiction, its "faction" as some would say....the godfather 1 & 2 were the first modern gangster movies, its 100% as much as a masterpiece as goodfellas but a TOTALLY different style, wheras (insanely enuf) goodfellas relies on a little comedy & super fast modern pacing (goodfellas came out in 1989 & set the standard for 90's movies, SO many imitators of goodfellas in the 90's) the godfather films are more classical, super heavy & dark & dramatic, but the gravitas & epicness of it will make ur head spin...godfather 2 really effected me when i saw it at age 22 in 1998, idk how to describe it, its inspiring, it has this good vs evil dynamic to it...its just epic....whereas goodfellas is more about just a bunch of low lifes, lmao.

    • @vincentvancraig
      @vincentvancraig 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Goodfellas romanticizes criminality, the godfather is about much more than that & has grander themes....its almost like it could be a 500 year old story.

Martin Scorsese's parents worked w/him from the beginning. His parents have been working w/Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci since "Raging Bull" Working together for 45 years/12 films. (His father: too many onions.) They're old friends & that's one reason Ray Liotta was so quiet.

23:06 - this is typical Wiseguy behaviour..."a wiseguy's always right...even when he's wrong he's right..." this is a quote from Lefty Two Guns in the film Donnie Brasco...
The thing is...Billy Batts is a "made man" in the Gambino Family so he can essentially disrespect whoever he wants because he's made...
Tommy DeSimone/DeVito is just a thug at this point with no authoritative standing...so even though Billy Batts started the argument, Tommy was technically in the wrong because you're not supposed to disrespect a "made guy" no matted what! That's why Henry came over to Billy Batts to try and smooth things out...
