    I just bought a Suzuki dr650 and got stuck without fuel the other day and wasn’t sure of how this reserve thing works. Now I know. Thanks mate!

    Thank you for emphasizing how fuel flows on a motorcycle. One thing I have done when I replace the petcock, is to cut about 1.5 cm from the height of the main pick up tube. this increases the range by 22 miles, by reducing the "reserve" by .45 gallon. I found this a better arrangement as it is less likely to need to switch to reserve on the side of the road. Of course, with bikes without a fuel gage, keeping close track of travelled distance is imperative either way.

    Never knew till u look, or had it explained. To make it even more simplified I would describe the fuel tank as "PORTIONS" . Since it's all of one tank you have the regular running portion and then the reserve portion or the "Bottom" of the tank. This is also where water and muck may dwell.

    This video was very informative for me! A mechanic tried to explain to me what the "RESERVE" was by putting his two index fingers together and one finger half the length of the other. I thought it was in the gas tank, not the petcock itself! Great job explaining and awesome video!

    I thought I had a leaky fuel hose on my bike, then I found out the metal outlet was loose, I could actually pull it out from the valve body, I thought it should be welded or at least made into one body that cannot be disconnected? Are all fuel valve built this way, I mean the outlet pipe can be pull out?

    I'm new to working on my bike, iv made my way to the fuel petcock. Removed it to take apart & clean. The bike has been sitting inside for 10+ yrs, when I removed the petcock the two fuel lines were completely gone, eaten away I guess ? Have u run into this? I'm assuming I need to just buy the replacement, is there anything specific I need to do with the gas tank besides clean it. Thanks

    I never owned a bike with a petcock until i recently purchased a Honda Valkyrie. I was really confused about the purpose for it and wondered why they didn't just have a low fuel indicator light like every other bike I've owned. I actually ran out of gas on a 90 mile trip home from the dealership and was confused because I could hear that I still had gas in the tank sloshing around (this was before I knew it had a petcock). Luckily I was literally right next to a gas station. Silly question for you, if I just want access to my full tank of gas could I just keep it switched to reserve? I reset my trip odometer every fill up and have been going by that.

    • @doitallgaragetx
      @doitallgaragetx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can leave it on reserve, but it defeats the purpose of having a petcock....be careful

    • @BrianTBaumgardner

      Soon after I bought my bike I carried a small amount of gas with me. I ran the bike out of gas in the On position, switched it to reserve, noted my odometer and kept riding until I ran out of gas again. I went 20 miles. Hence forth, if I have to hit the reserve position, I know how far I can go before I'm hating life.

      Yes! Absolutely! Good question. I just did a carb job on my neighbors honda rancher. The bike sat up for ~5 yrs or so. I put the carb back on, then no fuel was going to the carb. I pulled the tank, removed the petcock and it was so full of gunk that it wasn't letting fuel through. We replaced it with a new one.

      If it has screws in the pet cock, you can buy a rebuild kit. However, the replacement petcock assembly is cheap enough to where it's probably worth replacing it. It's much faster too.
