    Yes! Julius Caesar! But Ewan’s eulogy reminded me of Brutus speech, condemning Caesar for his ambition. Then Kendall sweeps in to turn things around, like Mark Antony. When I saw how Roman was behaving since Logan’s death, I was reminded of Marc Antony’s speech, in private, to Caesar’s corpse. Roman hugs Shiv & Kendall, then Roman goes alone to see Logan’s corpse on the plane. Although he is “meek & mild” to Kendall & Shiv, his actions over the next episodes seem to be driving towards the curse and prophecy in Marc Antony’s speech. By Election Day, and particularly the day after, Roman seems to be crying “Havoc,” while the crowds on the streets are the dogs of war “let slip.”

      Fascinating insight. I didn't even consider Brutus' speech after Caesar's assassination, but you're totally right! The tension between personal love and a sense of greater moral duty is very much present in both eulogies.

    Roman exiled himself to Barbados! And now with the finale, their fates line up very well with the deaths in king Lear

    Great video! I’m only somewhat familiar with King Lear so this was an excellent analysis as someone who hasn’t read/seen the whole play.
    I found this show so frustrating to watch because the characters are constantly manipulating each other and attempting to backstab their way to the top (and then they have the audacity to say HOw DaRE YoU, when they get the exact same treatment). I think it makes those rare moments of vulnerability/authenticity that much more impactful. When Roman said “Is he in there? Can we get him out?” it was absolutely heartbreaking. You raise an excellent point - actions speak louder than words! It would be interesting to explore what the Roy love languages are. Video idea? Haha.
    Also, totally unrelated to the content but I like the pots, pans and utensils - adds a bit of charm to the backdrop!

    • @WilliamDuryea
      @WilliamDuryea  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you! I agree completely regarding how the constant conniving and backstabbing makes the rare moments of emotional honesty and vulnerability all the more poignant.
      I wish I could say the pots and pans were an intentional choice, but it's more the function of me recording in a shed because I can't find a place in the house with decent lighting and no background noise.

      @WilliamDuryea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might! I have some thoughts about Shakespearean allusions in the finale, but I'm not sure they're substantial/legitimate enough to justify a video. Going to have to do a little research first.

    • @lailadobb9221
      @lailadobb9221 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@WilliamDuryeaI think it’s interesting that the finale is so anti-Shakespeare in a way…although the ‘players’ fates are interesting parallels and “make sense dramaturgically” there is no tragic, Shakespearean fall, such as Kendall killing himself (like Jeremy Strong believed). Tom wins albeit as a meat puppet, yet he still wins whilst the Roys lose everything they desired or believed they wanted as a way to receive “a kiss from Daddy”.
      It is incredibly tragic and yet nothing like King Lear or any of Shakespeare’s works. Definitely one of my favourite finales to date. Wonderful analysis as always!

    Good video. My only gripe is that you speak very...slowly....with long....pauses. I had to speed it up quite a bit. Maybe that's just me.

    • @WilliamDuryea
      @WilliamDuryea  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's because the video is unscripted. I'm speaking extemporaneously, so sometimes I'm thinking about what I am going to say next as I speak. I edit out all of the really long pauses between thoughts, but if I cut the shorter pauses between individual words out, the video would be too choppy and I would have to throw b roll over a lot of it. It's a tricky balance that I'm still figuring out.

    • @rouxbe3595
