How Walking (almost) Every Day Is Improving My Mental & Physical Health.

  • As some of you may have heard me say, I struggle with anxiety and managing stress. A few months ago I decided to start walking (almost) every day for at least 10 minutes, especially after work. It never ends up being just 10 minutes and I find I'm out for at least half an hour but often longer. I've been amazed at how such a simple habit has made such a big impact on my life. At the beginning of the pandemic I used to do this regularly but the last couple of years have had many changes and an incredible amount of stress and, well, I stopped making this type of self care a priority. I'm so glad that I do this simple exercise regularly now and, while I'm not perfect, walk on almost a daily basis.
I hope you find my thoughts helpful. Let me know if you also have a walking practice.
As always, be kind, especially to yourself ❤️.
    Adelina

As a person who has tried every kind of exercise, I have finally realized that walking is something I have to be able to do for the rest of my life so I better do it everyday. I love Pilates and swimming, but I have to walk forever. At 75, I walk 5 miles a day and always try to find a pretty place to do it.

I think we’re in the same boat! I just turned 76 and after having a stroke in September of 2022 (luckily no physical setbacks, except about 15-20 percent dizziness) I decided to up my walking mileage. I have always kept physically fit, and the stroke is still such an enigma. Anyway, I set a goal to walk 1000 miles last year which I did. I have now written articles for different publications regarding the absolute benefits of walking at this age. I continue to walk now in 2024 at distances further than last year. Just want to encourage seniors to walk walk walk. The results are tremendously beneficial. I am returning this summer to hiking and camping, as I have always done, in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Good luck to everyone….happy walking!

❤ Adelina, hi 👋 Greetings from Kazan, RU.
A sync happened - I went for a walk to the Volga river before sunset, opened TH-cam and here you are with the video about benefits of walks ❤ I used to walk on a daily basis from January till March 2024 until I got a plantar fascia... and then all stopped. So now I'm trying to get back on the track. Thank you so much and let's praise the Lord

I'm sending you some courage. When I got a pretty bad Covid, I had to stop walking completely for more than 2 months, and my return to walking was miserable. It took me 3 months to come back to my usual pace, but it was worth the efforts ! My advice would be to give yourself grace, and keep walking as often as possible, at the pace you're comfortable with and for how long you can. Eventually, it will come back. Persistance is the key. Good luck !

As humans we don’t have all the answers but there is one that has. In nature you do feel Him, the creator of it all. I think you are feeling Him calling you out. God loves us and does want a relationship with Him for our good! Bless you Adelina…I love walking and sometimes I have promised myself to do a certain amount of walks like #50 or #30 and it does get me out to accomplish that. Then I post pics from my walks on my FB page to keep myself accountable. I might do it again. Thanks for sharing. Love and hugs❤️

Ahhh, the timing! I've been feeling stuck lately, and I know the benefits of walking for my mental and physical health. Today, I went with some friends on a trail. We stopped to take in the sounds, and boop, there go my glasses, down, down, down, and into the water! I tried to get them, fell in, and had a heck of a time getting out and back up the hill 😂 we laughed our butts off. Laughter and exercise! Keep up the good work, Adelina

So agree with you Adelina on the benefits of walking. I finally got back to my daily routine of going out first thing for my walk and I already feel better. I find one good habit also prompts others - like making sure I drink enough water each day as I’m terrible about that. And of course - making better food choices.

I’m with you on this. I walk minimally 10km a day. It’s the only exercise I enjoy. It has been so beneficial to my mental health. I do have some mental health struggles, and walking gives me clarity and a space to allow my brain to be silent. Just smelling all the trees and the breeze off the ocean triggers good sensations for me.

It is weird how you don't realize what the outdoors does to you until you stop going outdoors. It makes me grumpy and "depressed"
Like you I work from home and I do the "commute" thing too. But then things pile up and I forget it for a while. And after a while it then becomes this big thing to do, I think about it longer than actually doing it. The trick is to tell myself to stop thinking and just go, and that also can help 🙂Being my own mom ;-)
Thanks for the reminder, and the video and for taking the time to film, edit and post this, taking us along and show the beauty of nature and inspiring us
Btw; I also, feel the neck and shoulder pains, I do get massages, but I also bought this Shiatsu (spelling???) massage thing at Lidl a few weeks ago. It is a strap that you can lay around your neck or back and for 10 minutes at a time it is like two capable hands are getting the knots out. It even gets warm, I love it

I LOVE my walks. On a good day I can get in three. But it's usually two--morning break and at lunch. But I have joined--and I can't even believe I did this because I always said I hated gyms--a gym. I love feeling like I'm getting stronger. And I especially love being a dork old woman in my dork old clothes dorking it up with all the kids getting jacked and ripped.
One of my favorite books about being outside and how good it is for humans is The Nature Fix by Florence Williams. If you're ever struggling with motivation to get out for your walk this book will zap that in an instant and make you want to walk for days.

I also work remotely and always thought I would walk at lunch, but it doesn’t work for me either because I am thinking about what I need to do the rest of the day. During this beautiful spring - fall, I am going to commit to getting off the computer in a timely manner at the end of the day and set a goal of walking at least 2 days after work and build up to daily. I appreciate the idea of thinking of a walk as the time I would have been previously commuting in the car. I find more problems with stiffness in my hands than back issues with sitting all day, because of writing and typing.

You truly live in a beautiful spot. A lovely spot for a walk. I sit at home working too. The job is so much pressure I rarely get up unless the dogs need to go out. In March, I had major Lumbar surgery and I'm still healing. I'm sure sitting did not help the 2 herniated discs and scoliosis that I deal with. I am trying to build up my stamina so I can walk. I have the same experience as you.
Regarding stress and anxiety, I think the benefits come from the fact that stress is often an anticipation of what will/could happen in the future. When walking, you are fully in the present moment, especially if you walk without music or audiobook. And "here and now" is often less stressful than any future event.

You always have good ideas. This time you had pretty scenery. I have heard if you walk for at least 30 minutes you start to burn calories. So I try to walk for an hour. Lately I have just been cleaning and yardwork. That makes me feel good. Because I got something done and out of the house. I have also heard if you park far away from the store or whatever. You get exercise that way. Or walk up stairs instead of the elevator as another way of exercising. Or just pick up a five pound bag of potatoes, a couple of times.😊 Have a good week.

Love your commute home routine. When I worked my commute home was sometimes long and stressful. So getting home was beneficial as I knew I had to walk my dog. So we would walk the yard (about an acre) three times around. Sadly I lost my dog so my walks are solo up and down the driveway for about 18 minutes giving me a mile. Thouh of late I have to be aware are the air quality due to the Canadian fires and allergies. When that happens I go on my stationary walker.

I was a home health care worker working in clients homes. One client was concerned about her cat if she went into the hospital. Ask me if I wanted a cat. I had just lost my dog so I said yes as I was all by myself. So I readily agreed. I never told her that her cat was never a anti social. The fact that she had nine windows to actually look out was her blessing. Have had Katie Kat for 6 years now and she's a character. I always said we rescue each other. 👍🐈 Thanks care and todos to Sophie 😺

5lbs is huge with your prior size. Good for u! 👏. (Edit: meaning you were small to begin with, not over weight by any means, smaller u are harder to lose, u know what i mean).
I gained 25lbs these past 2 winters, bummed out about not being able to go south in my truck camper for first time yet, covid border blocks, then this year truck part on back order. So stupid thinking food would make me feel better, that was 20 yr old stupid thinking. Now i'm struggling to get it back off...it hopefully will happen eventually 🙃. Your little talk was another kick in the arse for me to stay on track, it's helpful. 🍻

Yes! Walking is good for us. I now walk🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️on a regular basis...
It all started as a teen, it decreased throughout my thirties for at least two decades then restarted again. I have lived in five states including Alaska. In all of those places I have walked long distances. After our son was born I pushed the stroller, then as he grew we walked to parks consistently. He is now grown n I walk solo during the week. It has done wonders for my mind too.
My dear husband has bad knees and can no longer walk very much. We go for rides in his bike 🛵 All the effort helps his mind and body (getting off n on). There's much benefit in getting out in nature. 🌞

Good review of the benefits of walking!
From the time I first started walking, my Grandmother and Aunties took me out for walks, so many memories! Walking has always been my exercise of choice, I am active in all sorts of ways, but walking is special. We have no easy access to walks of beauty such as yours where we live, so our daily walks follow the same old route every day. But we enjoy that, as it is surprising how much can change in a day in your surroundings. Today we found a capsized turtle by the side of the road, rescued it and took it to a wet area well away from the road, every day is different in the world if you are looking.
Gyms and repetitive exercises are not for me, I am active doing things that enhance life in multiple ways, such as felling trees, burning brush, up and down stairs many times a day to bring and take things from food storage, cooking from scratch, canning and preserving, cleaning, well living a life of gardening, preserving, scratch cooking etc. makes for almost constant movement. No gyms for us, no fresh air there! My 93 year old Mom goes for daily walks, although she now has a walker it hasn't slowed her down much. I was walking with her through a lilac garden on the weekend and she not only kept up with her children, she was fine at the end of the walk, and we were exhausted.

I do wish I could go for walks, safely. Since having the vaccine I often get lightheaded it's awful and scary. I have passed out twice luckily once was in my garden and the other in my living room. The first time I injured my head the 2nd time I missed the coffee table by a couple of centimetres. So I am scared to be out alone in my village however I do go walking when my son takes our dogs, I'm still terrified about passing out but I'm with my son rather than a stranger. Xx

My husband and I speed walk 4 MI every morning. I am going through treatment for breast cancer even during my chemo I walked every day and now I'm in radiation and I walk every morning before I go and have radiation. I really feel that that has helped me with the side effects not having as many side effects from the treatments.

I started trying to walk 20 minutes after my elderly dog died Nd often my walking turns into one to three hour walks, because of my TH-cam videos. I often film nature things and get lost in my filming that the time just flies by

I love walking, but living in a subdivision, I get so bored with the same route! That keeps me from walking so many times. I don’t always wanna drive to somewhere else. I wish I lived somewhere closer to nature.
