    Thanks for the review! I was afraid that the screen would suck for indoor training and was also undecided because this model doesn't have train load and effects (like huawei gt2, stratos 3, forerunner 245..), but at least it's accuracy and the things it brings are spot on. Btw, these extra metrics are licensed from Firstbeat from what i know and garmin cheaped out here... Now waiting for blackfriday deals to get the grey beast.

    Hi! It would be interesting to see a comparison of accuracy between built-in HR sensor and a chest strap.

    • @yoshua3968
      @yoshua3968 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There is a comparison from a German university (university of würzburg -> yeah i'm German):
      Built HR Sensors had an accuracy of 92-96%, while the chest strap had 98% accuracy (compared to a real doctors heart rate monitoring)
      Never sensors like in the new fenix's oder Vivoactive 4/4s should get about 96-98%!
      That's really impressive how far these tech goes today

    Great review. Trying to decide between this and the Forerunner 45. As a replacement for my nearly 3yo Apple Watch 3 Cellular which has begun crashing during runs despite fix attempts. So far the VA 4 seems to be the one and it was good to see that your friend used it and upgraded from the VA3 as I was looking at that too. V informative.

      I’ve had Apple Watch 3, Apple Watch 5 and Vivoactive 4. If you’re deep in the Apple eco system and use the watch more as a smartwatch then Apple Watch is the move. But if you lean more towards fitness and love all the stats garmin provides the VA4 imo is better than the Apple Watch.

    Great review. Happy to see someone use one of these watches in the gym. Does the VA 4 use a different HR sensor than the VA 3? I just bought the VA 3 whose HR sensor is far from accurate in the gym, or any activity other than steady-state cardio.
    I'm considering buying a chest strap or just upgrading to the VA 4 if it's going to be more accurate. Thanks!

    • @MrsUSified
      @MrsUSified 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AMOLED display AND battery life! You get 2-3 days less on the Venu which is stupid since if you are really using the watch for runs/workouts you may get 3 days out of it MAX. If on top of that you use it with music you won’t get more than 2 days on the Venu. VA4 is a no-brainer for me!

    • @Sebastian-zx1ek

      @@MrsUSifiedNot true. I never get less then 3 days even with workouts and music. More like 4 days. Which is more then enough.

    It’s Funny how user experience can vary so much. After testing no this against a polar ignite, galaxy active 2 and Apple Watch Series 4 I found the watch to have the least accurate heart rate (especially when it came to how quickly the heart rate dropped after a high intensity exercise.). On top of that the sleep tracking was abysmal. This is a pretty wide spread and known issue with Garmin devices. Their sleep algorithm is extremely poor at telling the difference between light sleep and waking moments. I’m not just talking about laying in bed vs sleeping which can be hard for any wrist based device but actually between say getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom will still be defined as light sleep by the Garmin device.
    This then also negates the benefits of their battery body technology since that number depends on accurate sleep tracking. Also he couldn’t be more right that the strength training profile is awful. It does such a poor job of determining how many reps you’ve done and also what exercise you’ve done. Speaking of sport profiles Garmin has a very short list compared to say Polar. Also on the workout subject gps seemed to take quite a bit of time to lock on. Definitely longer then the Apple Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Active 2 I was using at the same time.
    I really wanted to like this watch and kept it for three weeks hoping it would grow on me but the poor sleep data and in my experience the slow responding heart rate sensor just didn’t justify its $350 price tag. Also the body of the watch looks cheap. The stainless steel edge to the Face Is a nice touch but the body (while supposedly made of a reinforced fiber material) looks and feels like plastic.
    Also on the non fitness side of the things the way notifications are handled is really annoying. It’s easy enough to find notifications just swipe up from the main screen but reading each one requires two to three taps on it and to delete a notification means you have to click through each one and clear it. There’s no delete all that I could find. So for someone that gets a lot of notifications like i do it’s a real headache.
    Sadly for myself I can’t recommend it at all which is a real shame because on paper it seems like a really terrific do everything kind of smart watch.

    • @mimicutemi
      @mimicutemi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Brotzman do you recommend Polar ignite?

    • @brandonbrotzman9701
      @brandonbrotzman9701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tina Huang I do with a few caveats. I find it to be a really great training watch. It’s has an Accurate and responsive heart rate sensor, a ton of sport profiles, ability to customize what data you see on each screen and a really handy interval and countdown timer that works within each profile and can be changed at any time during the training session.
      Also I have found the sleep tracking to be spot on and the sleep recharge feature gives you actionable data to help you decide how hard to push your training that day. Also the always on display during workouts is a huge plus!
      Now the caveats. The watch has really limited smart features as you may know. Not even being able to control music playing through your phone is kind of a bummer and an odd omission for a gps running watch. The touch screen isn’t as sensitive as I would like but still usable (an at minimum two button system plus a touch screen would be a welcome change in the future to make actions easier while training).
      But those things aside I’m a big fan especially when it comes to using the watch for training and sleep. Right now I use my Apple Watch 4 for day time use then break out the polar for workouts and sleep. I also use Biostrap for sleep because Of the pulse ox and the other nighttime data it shows.
      Might be overkill but after trying a dozen different watches I felt this covered all my needs. Still a real shame the Vivoactive has such poor sensors and runs some awful sleep algorithms. Another story on that. While syncing my sleep data in the morning with the app open (assuming it would sync in the morning the connectivity to my iPhone XS was really finicky) it would still keep adding on sleep time as I laid there looking through the app at the over night data. Just absolutely abysmal.
      Plus looking at body battery again the Garmin would show my body batter completely filling up at 4 hours of sleep every night then just staying at 100 for However much longer I slept. I don’t think there’s anyone who would say that after only 4 hours of sleep they feel fully recharged.

      I agree with you on the sleep tracking and body battery feature: I wish there was a way to calibrate the algorithm for sleep tracking in the way that I’m able to do with the sleep application on my Apple Watch. I actually feel that my sleep tracking on the Apple Watch is much more accurate than what Garmin is doing. I also agree that Polar is doing a better job with sleep tracking too.
      I also agree that the body battery feature is a bit of a gimmick. I was noticing that my body battery would be 100% just about every morning, regardless of how I felt or how well I actually slept. That’s why I feel that the stress score is much more important because it’s looking at heart rate variability, which in my opinion is a better indicator of how your body is performing.
      All of that being said, where I think I might disagree is on the accuracy of the sensors: it could be a quality control issue where we happened to get a good watch and others have gotten something less so, but the watch that we got performed very well, the GPS and heart rate sensor were spot on. Again, we are just sharing our subjective experience, individual results may vary, as they say.

    • @brandonbrotzman9701
      @brandonbrotzman9701 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Techy Agent it certainly could have been a quality control issue as I had numerous issues with the watch losing connection with my phone even when the phone and watch were inches from each other. A few failed syncs in the morning also wiped out any sleep data (which wasn’t very useful anyway) but Garmin does say that sleep will only sync to the connect app if the first sync of the day is successful and if it’s not that sleep data is lost.
      Plus I know you look more at things from a sports and training perspective but I found the notifications to be dreadful to view. It would take two or three presses to open a notification and then to get rid of them you had to click delete for each notification. There’s no clear all option that I could see.
      So poor sleep data, useless body battery, sync issues, less then ideal notification handling, and horrific strength training profile were all just huge let downs especially at this price point.
      Still all that being said I love your review channel and you’re my first go to for fitness tech reviews! Definitely sticking though with my Apple Watch series 4 and Biostrap.
      Might also keep my polar ignite as it has the simply workout features all watches should have. Why other manufactures don’t build an adjustable interval timer and countdown timer into their workout profiles is beyond me. Such an incredibly simply and useful tool that everyone seems to miss out on.

      @@miodragkrajnovic5831 Mo is probably referring to the dim screen on the Fenix 6. It has something to do with the reflective light outside. With the Fenix series being more of an outdoors watch, the screen is fantastic in sunlight, but not so much in regular light (hope that makes sense). I have the Fenix 6x Pro Sapphire, and I can tell you honestly that it is the greatest fitness watch I have ever owned. I have owned the Garmin 645 music, Fenix 5, every Vivoactive, Polar Vantage V & M, Samsung Active 2, and so on and so on (I am a watch whore, lol) . Nothing touches the Fenix 6 in my humble opinion. It is STUPID EXPENSIVE though. So I will say, if you lift/run/bike casually, stay away from the Fenix 6. It is quite the overwhelming watch based on all the metrics and features that it offers. Hope that helps a little.

      I just purchased a Garmin Fenix 6X pro watch that did not turn on. After sitting on Garmin's chat support line for 30 minutes, I learned that they have no idea how to turn the watch on either. I asked to return the watch, which I bought from the Garmin website and got the runaround that I didn't try their troubleshooting tips. I tried everything they asked. I just want the watch to work as advertised. I'm sincerely disappointed in how Garmin handled this situation. "Tom" who is probably not really Tom, was a complete jerk to me in our chat session. Not once did he offer any helpful information. Instead, he asked me two questions again and again, "Do you want help troubleshooting or would you like to return the item?" Never did he offer an exchange or repair even though my watch is only 12 hours old! My advice, avoid Garmin at all costs!

    Hi, im a new subscriber, great videos. I currently have a Vivoactive 3 and wanting to lose weight. I dont do any gym work but i do a lot of walking and the job i have is quite physical - heavy lifting, repeated movements (im a housekeeper in a buzy hotel). Would you recommend upgrading to the Vivo 4 or stay with the 3? Does garmin do any workout plans?

    • @TechyAgent
      @TechyAgent  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that the Vivoactive 3 is still a great watch. I wouldn’t recommend upgrading to the 4 if you already have the 3 unless you have money to blow. However you did ask about workout plans and the newest Garmin Venu and Vivoactive 4 both have guided workouts, but they look better on the Venu. So if you have money to spend on an upgrade, you should check out my video on the Venu.

I also did not like the smaller screen 1.1" vs 1.3". I reordered a VA4 (for $199 Black Friday deal on Amazon). Was I doing something wrong or did I get a defective VA4s?

      Don here -- If you have a VA3 without music, the VA3 Music would be a decent upgrade on its own. It has a faster chip, storage space, and better GPS. For the VA4, I really liked the extra features like body battery as well as the impressive battery life. The VA3 music was really good in its own right, but the VA4 is a really nice piece of hardware.
