I went to the Bristol Show 2018 and heard these bad boys for myself. This youtube video does not even come close to recreating the sound that the ESLs produce! For starters they are unbelievably open, and when they play its like a wall of sound hitting you full in the face. They DO have bass, and while its not punchy (as compared to a box speaker) it is definitely present. What this video really fails to capture is the realism of their sound; one of the most natural-sounding speakers I've heard for sure, they just have a knack for emotion.
EDIT: @Pursuit Perfect System I mean no disrespect to you or your video, thank you for posting it. My comment is merely for people who haven't heard these in real life.
Only problem is now aig took manufacturing to China. I'll stick with my ancient 63s made here in Cambridgeshire UK
Try to get them serviced in North America and find Quad dealers never stick around long enough. And judging by the number of problems with these Chinese versions you will definitely need servicing.
This is a worry for me . I likewise have ESL63s and am thinking of upgrading , but perhaps I will get 2905s then upgrade the electronics myself

Thanks for the video. Recently purchased the Artera Solus to go with the Quad Z1s I had and a Technics 1210 GR (Ortofon Bronze, Graham Slee Gram Amp SE phono and Lautus interconnect ) with Chord Shawline and Epic cable. A very happy listenener😊!!

Did anyone try PSI AVAA C20 active bass trap on the wall behind Quad ESL's?
The only thing one can figure out from a video like this is to listen how the audio sounds when recorded with a portable recorder. Considering that, the speakers appear pretty good. (Try recording your own speakers with a smartphone and listen for the results.)
I still cannot understand why this kind of Hi-Fi shows do not bring A LOT of acoustic material into the demo rooms. If you're buying Quad speakers, you should put at least a couple of thousand USD into improving acoustics of the room, too.
This was not recorded with a smart phone but I did not have very good recording gear back in 2018 when I first started. You learn as you go. The reason they don’t take treatment for a show like Bristol is very much time constraints and logistics constraints. Go to the show on setup day and you will see what it’s like. I agree it’s not really an excuse but it’s also true

what's your take on those compared to dynaudio forty and kef reference? the quad seem to be very limited in dynamics maybe the amp or dac
Quads are much more resolving of low level and inner detail. The 4 square foot mylar diaphragm of the Quad is lower in mass than a one inch tweeter dome... it's even lower in mass than the air that it's moving. This diaphragm is also driven over every square millimeter of it's surface area (instead of a single voice coil like a cone speaker) making it a true force over area transducer. This gives the Quads a speed and resolution that even the best box speakers simply can't match. Well made electrostatics are inherently superior to moving coil drivers when it comes to detail retrieval and harmonic distortion.
Remove the grill cloth and metal screens and the Quads become another level more transparent. When this is done they are arguably the most musically natural and accurate loudspeakers on the planet... but only with the grill and screen removes. Unfortunately with grill off they are butt ugly and vulnerable so keeping the grill on is recommended. They are still fantastically good blowing away most any box speakers.
Wow a hi fi show in England. I thought you got arrested in England these day for being into hi fi and nt buying tinny Bluetooth shite from our govts Chinese overlords
England had an iconic reputation back the 70s for it's hifi and appreciation of good sound. Especially British loudspeakers that many regarded as the best.

I have the Artera Solus Play already and trying to decide beween Z4 and ESL2912 speakers
The Quad Artera Solus looks like solid piece of kit for £1500. However, seems like they sorta of ripped off the look of the Naim Atom. Plus it doesn't have its streaming capabilities built in with its own application. For those who use CD though it looks like a interesting buy.
Yippie I wonder if you can connect an ssd to the usb input via a dock and play music from that? it's got potential to rival the naim options at it's price Inc the streaming module upgrade

Awesome speakers owned 2 pair so when one broke died I always had another to put in its place paid more to ship them for repair than I paid for them now made in china well who knows if that is better the brits never figured them out neither did the yanks
That's been the problem with Quad, spotty and unstable distribution combined with unreliability of recent products. Buy them and they break... then the distributor packs up and leaves or abandons Quad. Who fixes them? Servicing Quads is especially a nightmare in North America.

Yeah that's all a Quad stat user cares about... goes loud as has lots of bass.
@@socksumi my quads go loud and have bass. These pretentious videos never do these speakers justice. They treat quads like a midrange driver made of rice paper. Quads are capable of much more than just a fourteen year old Chinese girl singing to the accompaniment of one violin
Again not the very best electronics being used to demonstrate legendary speakers at this show. I think they can sound a lot more natural than that. Tubes would help.
MrCatalysis101 I think more a case of showing what their all in one Arterus Solus can do. Bearing in mind your listening to music streamed from tidal then streamed bluetooth to Arterus Solus from an iPad
Pursuit Perfect System oh absolutely. I get what they're trying to do but to me that's not making the most of what are quite incredible speakers.
Quads of any vintage always sounded awesome with tube amps.

Where's the beef (base?) Base is what make sound realistic and it is absent with these ESL speakers.

@@audiopath747May just be something with the electrostats, they are kinda weird listen at 5:33 though for a few seconds it's picking up the bass
