Yeah. I noticed it in my first watch in the cinema. She purposely tries to sound "youthful" for this movie so that her voice sounds "mature" for the 2nd part of the movie to emphasize the time skip. I believe they also do this in the musical (not really sure since all of them are just videos here in yt that I watched
The orchestration and arrangements done for the film are absolutely incredible and are not getting their due quite as much, I fear. This rearrangement is masterful, as is practically every single moment from the chorus. Those singers were putting their ALL into this thing.
So I think you mentioned this in another video from wicked, but it feels like an intentional choice for Cynthia to remain quite ‘bright’ in these early, Shiz school song, Elphaba hasn’t really discovered herself yet, still ‘young’ I guess. You see hints of her bigger (fuller sound) personality in like the Wizard and I, but it makes so much sense when the story gets to Defying Gravity that her sounds is so full! Also excited for you to do Defying Gravity, I love the choices they made in the movie, both for Cynthia’s singing choices as well as the extended version of the song.
Wicked has made me appreciate Ariana as a vocalist more than I have (I've always been a huge fan of her). We all know by now she started off doing musical theater and it's SO fascinating to see her vocals here vs her r&b and pop music. Cynthia is also absolutely amazing and both of these women are the core reason this movie was successful

Wicked should have swept the Golden Globes easily.

I think it is interesting that they changed one of the harmonies in this song for the movie, where it’s different in the musical. On the very last line of the song, “my whole life long” Ariana is on the fifth and Cynthia is on the third. On Broadway, Galinda is still on the fifth, but Elphaba is on the root. I like the broadway version better because having the root makes the harmony/chord sound more resolved, but I definitely thought it was an interesting choice here. I noticed it on my first listen through and was like “huh… interesting.” 7:20
I think the reason Cynthia’s vocals seem to match Ari more in the earlier parts of the film is because Elphaba is still unsure of herself and trying to fit in. Even during The Wizard and I, Elphaba is bright and hopeful, which fits the tone of the story at that point. I feel like Cynthia made the choice to contrast the rest of her performance with Defying Gravity because it’s her moment of letting go of who she thought she was and embracing who she’s meant to be. Stepping into herself fully.
Please film a reaction video for, "I'm not that girl" next! She has such a connection to her emotions while singing, and more importantly, she knows what to do vocally, to make the audience feel the same impact when she performs I should have prefaced comment with, "If defying gravity isn't the next reaction you film then...."

Cynthia changes her voice to fit the character. Check out her Oscar performance of her song "Stand Up" where she played Harriet Tubman versus her performances as Aretha Franklin. She has said that Cynthia sings quite differently than Elphabeh.
