The High Performance heatsink is for 95W CPUs which on the 3630 are i7-8700K, I7-9700K & i9-9900K ("K" means they are unlocked CPUs by Intel. Dell slightly overclocks these which produces more heat. Unfortunately you can't user overclock them since Dell's BIOS is locked down). Caveat: These CPUs also require the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) heatsink right next to the high performance heatsink. See Voltage Regulator Heatsink Thermal Module part# 639V8 or 0639V8 for Dell XPS 8930 & T3630 Precision 3630 Tower on e-Bay. I have the i7-8700K and it has both heatsinks.
Are your Precision 3630 CPU and PSU fans running continuously when machine is idle (no load)? I have i7-8700 CPU with standard cooler and Quadro P2000. All three fans (CPU, PSU and Quadro GPU) run non-stop in low speed even there is hardly any load on the system. Search online it seems that Quadro P2000 indeed keep the fan running non-stop, wondering if it is the case for Precision CPU and PSU fans? Would changing the CPU thermal paste help to stop the fan when machine is idle/low-load?
Apparently there are at least 3 CPU coolers. I have two machines. One came with an I3-8100 and the other a XEON E-2146G. Both coolers look like the one that you described as standard in the video. However, the XEON cooler has a copper contact while the I3's cooler is all aluminum.
Is there a possibility to upgrade the i5-8500 CPU to a more potent i7-9700K ? This CPU is listed in the Dell optional CPU. Very nice video, thank mate.
There are 3 3.5" bays, each one could support 2x 2.5 drives with a mounting bracket. To use more than 4 drives, you'll need some sort of SATA controller card.
I like the design of dell 3630, the case is identical to a Alienware r9 with fairing removed, the cpu cooler can be upgrade to a 120mm AIO fitted to the top of the case. But the pricing is way higher than thinkstation p330 with the same configuration. I got p330 with i9-9900, 32gb ram, 512gb m.2 NVMe, Quadro rtx4000 for $1300 with small business discounts. It cost $2500 to get the dell with this configuration. Dell says they can price match to HP and Lenovo on its website, I just talked to a dell customer service, they send in a price match request for me, we’ll see how it goes.
i have this pc and want to upgrade over time for gaming use. if i get a gaming case and transfer all the internal components over will there be any compatibility issues? if not, what sort of case would work? thanks for any help:)
Hi. I have upgraded my T3630 to an I7-9700K with a Geforce RTX 3060. However I'm struggling to find a high performance fan & heatsink to upgrade to standard one which came with it. Any ideas where I could find one? Also if anyone else is thinking about adding a decent graphics card to this system, please note that there is a triangular piece of metal in the outer frame which may impede your ability to completely close the case when the card is installed. you can see the part I'm referring to in the video at 2:19 on the right hand side when the unit is open. I ended up removing the triangular piece with a pair of pliers, a bit of elbow grease and patience (so I didn't damage the wider frame). You'll have to be careful when you open and close the unit in future but it did do the trick.
Thank you for this video! I’m wondering what’s the biggest or best graphics card this exact machine can support?? Thank you! A video regarding this question would be amazing.
I've seen folks put a evga 3080 ti in their system. I figure anything with those physical dimensions should work, though I went with the shorter 3060 ti so I could add the front fan bracket. Make sure that you check the wattage on your power supply before moving forward.
Could you please tell me whether or not you put a thermal pad under the M.2 SSD ?? In general I really need to know if the SSD must have thermal pad applied /and/or/ a heatsink ?? I have the precision 3630 and I just bought a 1TB Samsung Pro SSD, and I'm afraid to install it before I know .. Please Advice! .. Thanks!

@@droz6462 I gave one T3620 & think the T1650 to Goodwill, as the one 3620 wasn't complete. The 1650 was older, plus I had other PCs to put in storage! Haven't done much with them since. Thank you
I have the i7-8700 installed on this machine. The CPU runs at 80 - 90 degrees most of the time which ( think) causes several of my programs and browsers to freeze and lag. I want to install a better CPU cooler. Do you know if I have to remove the mobo to swap out the existing CPU cooler? Also, do you know what size cooler I need to buy?
Do you already have the High Performance heatsink mentioned in the video? If not, then it is direct bolt in replacement without modification. If you do already have the HP heatsink, you may want to try a Pure Rock LP, which is rated for 100C cooling. That one will require that you remove the motherboard.
First check the power output of the current power supply. You may need to upgrade yours depending if it is the baseline 300W or not. As for what GPU to buy, that really depends on how much extra heat you want to introduce into the system. I've seen folks stick a 3080 ti into one. Personally, I went with a 850W SFX PSU and grabbed a 3060 ti FE card. That way I could add the Dell front fan bracket.
Take a look at the label on the side of the power supply. It should post the wattage. 460W would be a little light for those components. You could try it, and if they system shuts off or goes to a black screen during heavy load, you'll have to upgrade the power supply.
does the I7 8700 CPU require high speed fan? and is this model with Upgrading from the Dell Optiplex 9020 MT? how much of a performance boost can I expect from the 9020 MT? Thanks!!
The 8th and 9th gen CPUs are around 40% faster in processing related tasks vs the 4th gens. They are also more efficient in power draw, and have higher max temps, so you get full performance longer and cheaper than with the 4th gen chip. They also introduce support for on-board NVME storage, and no tricks are needed to eventually migrate to Windows 11.

We haven’t tested it yet. However, the T3630 does have a tpm 2.0 option in the bios. If you enable that option, it should be compatible with win 11. Let us know if you try it.
@@bhimgrg05 I believe it is just a built-in quality check of the system. I've also tried finding a way to get rid of it.
